Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
Natalie looked at her reddened palm with disgust and said, "How annoying."

Behind her, Andy continued to snicker.

I stood there in a daze. When I met Andy's mocking gaze, I finally understood.

The doctor had been bought off by him long ago.

Three days had passed since Micah's funeral.

During that time, Natalie didn't come home even once.

I had always turned a blind eye to her blatantly cheating on me with Andy, but I was no longer going to clean up their messes for the sake of Jett Group or protect Natalie's reputation like I used to.

In two more days, I would finally be free.

Before leaving, I tore up my copy of our marriage certificate.

Then, I removed the ring I had worn when I married Natalie.

The ring had belonged to Natalie's father.

Before he passed, he had solemnly placed it in my hands and said, "When I'm gone, I'm entrusting Nat to you."

I gripped the ring and called Natalie.

"Let's meet."

There was a brief silence on the other end. She seemed to think I was finally admitting fault and answered cheerfully, "I knew that you'd come crawling back to me. Come over while I still have some time."

She hung up and sent me an address.

It was the villa where she and Andy were living.

However, the moment I arrived at the villa, Natalie's bodyguards surrounded me. Her impatient voice came through their radio.

"Drag him up here. Andy is getting dizzy again. His anemia must be acting up."

Hearing that, I paled and instinctively tried to run.

But the next second, the bodyguards grabbed me by my sleeves and dragged me into the villa.

"Draw his blood. Take as much as needed."

Natalie looked down at me condescendingly. Beside her, Andy clutched his forehead, looking as though he was in great pain.

She snapped anxiously, "Didn't you hear me? Andy can't wait any longer! If anything happens to him, your brother can say goodbye to this world too!"

"Natalie Jett, have you gone insane?" I yelled at her. "This is murder! You'll go to jail for this!"

I desperately struggled as I stared at the large needle in the doctor's hand.

Natalie kicked me hard in the stomach.

"Stop squirming! Do you want your brother to die?"

Then, without giving me a choice, she ordered the doctor to draw a total of one liter of my blood from me.

I lay sprawled helplessly on the floor. Watching the way she fussed over Andy made me feel utterly ridiculous.

I clutched the wound on my arm, my face deathly pale from losing so much blood.

"Natalie Jett, from now on, we owe each other nothing."

I threw my wedding ring at Natalie's feet.

Only then did she tear her attention away from Andy. She stared blankly at the ring before quickly picking it up.

"What's the meaning of this? My dad entrusted this to you, and you just throw it around like it's nothing?"

She was about to scold me, but the moment she met my frigid gaze, she stopped.

Her lips parted, and her voice unconsciously became flustered.

"Fine. It was just one liter of blood. I'll have someone bring back an experimental drug for Micah as compensation. It'll definitely wake him up."

I leaned against the wall and took several breaths.

Whenever I closed my eyes, I could still see the state my brother had been in when he died.

"No need."

Natalie sounded irritated. "What now?"

She was extremely annoyed after I rejected her. She reached out to steady me, but I shoved her away.

Behind us, Andy feigned a groan.

Natalie glared at me before turning around to check on him, ignoring me completely.

As I dragged my exhausted body out of the villa, I called Madeline.

"I don't want to wait anymore."

Madeline was silent for a moment before finally sighing.

"Don't worry. I've already made arrangements for you. Leave after the family dinner the day after tomorrow."

"Your parents and Micah are still back here. It's been a while since you've visited their graves."Madeline was right. Even if she divorces Andy, I won't have any further dealings with her."Madeline fell silent for a while before finally letting out a sigh."The truth is…"It turned out that Andy had cheated on Natalie not long after they married. Natalie lowered her head awkwardly. She had not expected me to give her such a reason. I didn't bother to lie to her either. She said, "I'm really sorry about Micah."Her voice was very audible. In all the years I had known her, this was the first time she had ever admitted that she was wrong. Then, she said urgently, "I investigated everything! It was all Andy's fault. He bribed the doctor. I never intended for Micah to die!"Even after all this time, hearing my brother's name still caused my heart to ache."Do you know how he died?" I asked hoarsely."Micah was my only family. Before my parents died, they made me promise to take good care of him."He had been in a coma for three years. The day before you had his blood drawn, the doctor had just told me that he was showing signs of waking up. If you hadn't taken his blood, he might've opened his eyes and seen me one more time."Do you know what it felt like to watch bag after bag of blood being sent to Andy's hospital room, th

It was as though Natalie wanted the whole world to know that she was getting married that day.I didn't attend her wedding, but I still heard about it from all sorts of places.Even my coworkers at my new company marveled at it."There really are a lot of rich people in the world. This wedding is ridiculously lavish!"They showed me the livestream. In it, Natalie stood on a raised platform, wearing a pristine white wedding gown. However, she did not look particularly happy. Every so often, she glanced toward the entrance as if she was waiting for someone.Halfway through the ceremony, she suddenly gathered up her wedding dress and tried to leave.Standing beside her, Andy quickly grabbed her arm."What's wrong, Nat? Are you feeling unwell? Everyone's watching."Natalie shook off his hand and said dismissively, "I'm going to make a phone call."Not long after, my phone rang.My coworkers, who had been enjoying the spectacle, immediately turned to me. Someone even teased me.

Natalie froze, the shock on her face giving way to a trace of panic. She asked, "Wasn't the whole point of the agreement you made back then to keep me from joining the company? Now, you're suddenly willing to release me from it? You're even letting me divorce Julian?"She clearly did not believe her mother and turned to me."What are you up to this time? Besides, how could Micah possibly be dead? I hired the best doctors to treat him! Is playing the victim the only thing you know how to do?"Her accusations tore at my heart.Every time I closed my eyes, I could still picture the state Micah had been in when he died.He was still so young, and he had been so close to waking up.I snapped, "Every drop of blood was drained from Micah. How could he possibly have survived?"Haven't you always hated my brother and me? You've always wanted to be with Andy, haven't you? Now, your dream has come true."Natalie's eyes widened, and she immediately protested. "That can't be! Micah can't b

After drawing my blood, Natalie came to see me of her own accord. In her hands was the latest experimental drug from overseas. It used to be one of the medications Micah had needed most.At the very least, it could have kept his condition from progressing to brain death."I've also brought in specialists from abroad. They can treat Micah at any time."The doctors said he's close to waking up, didn't they? Maybe he'll wake up this time. Then, the two of you can finally be reunited."We had been married for many years, so I knew that this was Natalie's way of extending an olive branch to me. Unfortunately, I no longer needed it.When she saw my unmoved expression, she frowned in confusion."Andy's condition is special. He can't survive without your blood," she defended.I let out a mocking laugh and looked at her."Is there no one else in this world who shares his blood type? Does it have to be me?"It's just a little anemia. Will he really die from something like that?"Natal
