Chapter 156

Author: Luna Starling
Travis slipped inside and locked the door, disappearing from their sight.

As soon as the tension eased, Jennifer tugged Nora away. While waiting for the elevator, they saw Henry rushing out with a medical kit in hand.

“Miss… Yates.”

Nora gave him a faint nod and stepped into the elevator with Jennifer.

It wasn’t until they reached the restaurant that Jennifer finally dared to lower her voice. “What on earth happened back there?”

Nora didn’t want to talk about it.

Sensing it, Jennifer wisely let it drop and instead shifted to lighter topics. “Tonight, Susie’s throwing a private party for all the guests. Just a small gathering to liven things up. When she gets here, I’ll introduce you.”

“Alright,” Nora agreed. Since she was on Susie’s turf, it was only right to meet the host. As for the party itself, she wasn’t particularly interested.

“Nora, so you came with Jennifer after all. Then why didn’t you explain back in the locker room? You just let Jayley assume you were here with som

Travis reached Nora first, stepping in front of her like a shield. His voice was low and cutting.“I’ll give you one chance. Pick up Nora’s things, put them back in her bag, and apologize. Do that, and I’ll let this go.”Jayley and Lily both froze, clearly not expecting him to take Nora’s side.Even Susie came over, alarmed by the commotion. Seeing Travis here and standing with Nora, she immediately ordered staff to start searching for the missing necklace. The crowd, emboldened now that Travis had spoken, erupted one after another.“All this because she bumped into you? And you accuse her of stealing? Ridiculous!”“With this many people around, why single out Mrs. Luther?”“You have no proof, no witnesses. For all we know, you made the whole necklace story up!”Jayley flushed crimson under the guests’ scorn and darted a desperate look at Lily. What now?Lily hadn’t expected Travis to back Nora either. Normally, even if their families’ interests overlapped, Travis never made a

Jayley had pulled this trick on others before, but no one had ever called her out so bluntly.Their argument quickly drew a crowd. From the center of the room, Travis heard Nora’s voice. His expression darkened, and he strode over, cutting through the guests.Jayley, flustered by the attention, glared at Nora. “Don’t think you can talk your way out of this. I’ll search your bag right now and prove it’s in there!”Nora gave a cold laugh. “You have no right to search my bag. Unless you call the police and have them check every guest here, I’m not cooperating.”If they wanted to smear her, she would drag everyone else into the mud with her.The onlookers, who had been enjoying the drama, instantly stiffened. No one wanted to be searched.“She’s right. You’d better have proof before making accusations. Do you know who’s here tonight? You can’t just talk nonsense.”“That necklace sounds expensive. If it was really so important, you wouldn’t have misplaced it so easily.”“Besides, M

The moment Jayley realized it was Nora she’d bumped into, she snapped, “Ugh, of course it’s you. What bad luck!”Nora couldn’t even be bothered to argue. She turned on her heel and walked away.Jayley didn’t try to stop her. With so many people around, causing a scene would only embarrass herself. Besides, she was here on a mission. Nora hadn’t checked her bag once, which meant the job was done.“Lily, I slipped the necklace into her bag. She’s all yours,” Jayley whispered later.Lily had already spotted Nora wandering alone. Not wanting to draw suspicion herself, she’d arranged for Jayley to play scapegoat.“Good. Let’s sit back and enjoy the show,” Lily murmured.Nora, meanwhile, had no interest in small talk. After circling the room once, she saw Jennifer laughing with a rising young actor, reading palms as part of some party game. Knowing better than to interrupt, Nora drifted off on her own.Bored, she suddenly froze.Travis had arrived. He wore a deep navy three-piece su

As the host, Susie arrived dressed to the nines. What was supposed to be a casual gathering had turned into a full-on banquet.Nora hadn’t planned on staying, but with Travis wounded, she knew he’d be holed up in his room. If she went back now, there’d be no avoiding another confrontation. So she chose to remain. The problem was, she hadn’t brought an evening gown. Fortunately, Jennifer’s van always carried designer dresses on standby. Within minutes, her assistant had pulled out an off-shoulder gown that fit Nora perfectly.“Isn’t this a little too formal?” Nora asked as the assistant curled her hair.Jennifer, busy applying lipstick, laughed softly. “Not at all. Tonight it’s not just Wellford’s elite. Families from Harbor City are coming too. They told Susie to keep it simple, but you know how these people are. Every move is calculated.”Nora glanced at her. “And what about you?”Jennifer smoothed the plunging neckline of her gown and smiled with a glint of mischief. “Me? I’m o

Travis lifted his gaze, looking straight at Nora, his eyes full of raw honesty. But to her, this late honesty was worth no more than trash.“Travis, give it up. When I divorced you, I never once thought about turning back. Instead of wasting your breath, maybe you should deal with that cut before you drip blood all over my room.”He had stripped himself bare, hoping that even if she didn’t forgive him, she might at least soften. He hadn’t expected her to be this hard, refusing him so completely.Frustration boiled over, and he snapped, “Then if you won’t listen, I’m not leaving.”As long as he stayed in the room, what could she really do? Kick out a man standing there bleeding?Nora hadn’t thought the great CEO of Luther Corp would stoop to playing stubborn. She gave a sharp laugh. “Fine. Then I’ll leave.”When she strode toward the door, Travis panicked. Forgetting his wound, he rushed after her and grabbed her arm. “Nora, I’m not trying to drive you out. I just want—”She wre
