Chapter 166

Author: Luna Starling
Nora had no choice but to give in. She smiled. “Fine. Dinner’s on me tonight. Nobody argue.”

Eric pulled open the passenger door for her like a gentleman. “My car’s small, so the backseat’s a bit cramped. You’ll have to sit up front.”

Nora glanced at the back, which actually had plenty of room, but bit back her words and slid into the front seat anyway.

Not long after Eric’s car pulled away, another car rolled up to the front of Luther Corp. Inside sat Quinton, clutching a carefully wrapped gift.

“Quinton,” Lily said softly, “this is the very first birthday present you’ve ever prepared for your mom. That makes it extra special. You have to give her a proper surprise.”

Quinton’s eyes widened. “How do I do that?”

Lily pretended to think for a moment, then smiled. “Here’s the plan. I’ll take your gift upstairs first. Once the timing feels right, I’ll text you. Then you can come up and hand it to her yourself. She’ll be thrilled.”

Quinton remembered hearing his classmates talk about

After school, Quinton had been clutching his phone all afternoon. From sunrise to sundown, he kept waiting, but Nora never called.“Quinton, it’s time for dinner.”The butler called him several times but got no response. Curious, he walked over.Seeing Quinton sitting motionless with his phone, the butler asked gently, “Quinton, who are you waiting for?”Quinton rubbed the phone, his little face dimming. “Today’s Mom’s birthday. She promised she’d call me once she finished work, but it’s already dark and she still hasn’t. Do you think… maybe she forgot?”The butler blinked, only now remembering that today was Mrs. Luther’s birthday. He quickly forced a smile. “I doubt she forgot. Both your father and mother have been swamped with the new project at the company. She’s probably still working late.”Some of the sadness in Quinton’s eyes faded. His expression brightened with hope. “Really?”The butler nodded firmly. “I’m sure she’ll reach out once she’s free. In the meantime, why d

Travis gave a faint nod and asked nothing more.Soon, the food began to arrive.Nora glanced at the table and froze. Every plate was filled with dishes she liked; grilled sea bass, roasted vegetables, even her favorite truffle pasta.Almost involuntarily, her eyes shifted toward Travis—only to find him already watching her.Their gazes locked, and for a fleeting moment the air thickened with something unspoken.Merlin noticed and couldn’t help the smile tugging at his lips. “Mr. Luther, why don’t you two start first? I’ll step out for a moment.”Nora immediately shot him a look, silently begging him not to leave.Merlin, misreading her entirely, winked back as if to say: Now’s your chance.Nora’s lips parted, speechless. The private dining room fell into heavy silence. She grew restless in the quiet, but the more she wanted to shake it off, the more suffocating it became.“You like fish, don’t you?” Travis finally broke the silence, his voice calm. “The chef’s sea bass is th

“Happy birthday, Mom! I already prepared your gift. Can we have dinner together tonight?”Quinton’s childish voice carried pure excitement and hope.Only then did Nora realize it was her birthday. For her, the day had never felt special. She hadn’t made any plans.Hearing how much her son wanted to celebrate, she didn’t agree right away. “Focus on school today. Once I finish work, I’ll let you know.”Quinton’s tone dipped with disappointment, but he remembered what his mother had told him before that she had her own life too. Even Dad had said he needed to respect her choices.“Okay, Mom. I’ll wait for your call.”After washing up, Nora headed to Luther Corp. The new design project was in its final stage. Once the draft was locked, Merlin would take over the next steps, freeing her to return to Stardust. When she walked into the office, Merlin’s assistant Melvin Revee greeted her with a teasing smile.“What is it?” she asked, puzzled.“You’ll see when you check your office.”

“Don’t waste words on him. Let’s go.”Nora didn’t want to spend another second on Travis. She headed straight for Eric’s car and reached for the door.Eric had moved at the same time, intending to open it for her. He was just a moment too late, and his hand brushed against the back of hers, lightly enclosing it.“Sorry.” He pulled back quickly, but his whole hand was burning.Nora felt a flicker of awkwardness but showed nothing, slipping into the car without a word.Travis hadn’t seen the brief contact, but even so, he didn’t follow. He knew if he pushed her now, he’d only drive her further away and that wasn’t the outcome he wanted.Back at her apartment, Nora and Eric parted ways downstairs. She spent the last day of the weekend resting, finally giving herself a chance to breathe.By Monday, she was back at Stardust Studio. She gathered her small team and handed Oliver the draft she’d completed. “Polish this up and reach out to a reliable factory for samples. If everything g

In the end, Jayley chose the safer option. She apologized, picked up Nora’s bag and belongings, and returned them to her before clutching the necklace and fleeing in humiliation. The uproar died down, and the banquet slowly wound to a close.Travis wanted to tell Nora they should talk later, but she didn’t spare him a glance. When he tried to call after her, a client intercepted him for conversation.Jennifer, who hadn’t been able to speak earlier, tugged Nora’s arm and laughed. “I was worried you’d get the short end, but you handled yourself better than I expected. Sharp tongue you’ve got there.”Nora couldn’t help but smile. “Takes one to know one.”Susie also came over, apologetic. “I’m sorry, Nora. The first time I invite you here and you end up dragged into nonsense like that. Consider me owing you one. Next time, your visit’s on the house.”Nora’s eyes glimmered slightly at the sincerity in her tone. “Since you’re being so earnest, I’ll take you at your word and won’t hold
