Chapter 2

Auteur: Jumping Fish
After I got home, I dug out the property deed to the villa Julia had spent over a billion dollars building—our marital home.

"Hello, is this Ms. Smith, the real estate agent? Yeah, I'd like to list a property for sale."

The next morning, I was still asleep when Juliet suddenly returned. She rushed in like a storm, damp and chilled, not even bothering to change out of her wet clothes.

Instead, she hurried over to me and, while shaking, asked, "Hugo, did you put our villa up for sale?"

The villa was in my name. Juliet had arranged it that way, so any listing wouldn't notify her. That was, unless she had gone to the real estate office herself.

I didn't answer right away. Instead, I questioned, "You went to the real estate office?"

She froze for a moment, her gaze flickering. After a few seconds, she replied, "A friend wanted to buy a villa, so I went with them to give some advice…"

Was it a friend, or was it Luke?

It seemed she really liked that "wedding gift" he had prepared, enough to bring him along first thing in the morning to look at villas.

I did my best to keep my emotions in check, my voice steady. "Yeah. I've needed some money lately."

The assisted dying service required a huge payment, and besides, I figured my heart was worth that much.

Juliet's expression visibly relaxed. "I was just worried you didn't like it. I didn't sleep all night because of that."

The dark circles under her eyes and the faint red veins in them proved she hadn't rested. When she moved, however, the dense hickeys scattered across her skin stood out far more, jarring against everything else.

"Luckily, you'd only just listed it. I bought it back right away!" she said. "I poured everything I had into building that villa for us. It's proof of how much I love you. Hugo, if you need money, just go straight to the company's finance department."

As she spoke, Juliet called her assistant. "From now on, any expenses my fiance makes are not to be questioned. No need to report them to me either."

She looked back at me, her voice softening. "Do you have any idea how scared I was when I saw the listing? I thought you were selling it because you didn't want to marry me anymore."

She took my hand and pressed a light kiss to my fingers.

Oh, Juliet. I wondered how she could act so convincingly.

Just moments ago, she had rushed back from another man's side. Now, she was playing the part of my devoted fiancee.

"I needed money because… I wanted to prepare a wedding gift for you," I said.

Juliet's eyes lit up immediately. "Really? I'll look forward to your surprise, honey."

I hoped she would like it when the time came.

In the following days, Juliet didn't come home. Luke's messages to me, however, never stopped.

In a Maybach that had been chosen as our wedding car, the leather seat was stained with large, damp patches. A video showed the area beneath the seat was littered with torn condom wrappers.

Luke's tone was smug. "I honestly didn't expect her to be that insatiable. We tried over ten different positions in the car alone."

I didn't reply. I was busy clearing out everything in the villa that had anything to do with me. If I were going to disappear, I would do it cleanly.

Three days before the wedding, I received the bill for the assisted dying service. It was expensive, but the company offered strict confidentiality agreements.

If Juliet ever found out I was using assisted dying as a way to fake my death and disappear, knowing her, she would never let it go.

The payment from the villa sale hadn't come through, so I had no choice but to go to Juliet's assistant, Bailey Henderson. When she saw the payee's name, Dignity in Passing, she looked up at me in surprise.

"As you said before, a marriage certificate is just a piece of paper that binds two people. What really mattered was the love we shared!" Juliet countered, a little unhinged, a little devastated.Because of something I had said back then, Juliet and I never registered our marriage. It wasn't like there was any mutual love between us, anyway.Just then, the villa door was kicked open with a loud crash. Juliet's father, Benedict Stone, stormed in and struck her hard, knocking her to the floor.Alicia rushed in after him, crying out, "Have you lost your damn mind? She's still recovering! You can't treat her like this!""She's the one who's lost it!" Benedict roared. "Is Apex MedTech a figure our family can afford to offend? Who gave her the nerve to kidnap Serena Thyme's fiance?"As he spoke, he ordered the others to untie me.Juliet struggled back to her feet and stood before me, shielding me despite everything. "No one's taking Hugo away from me! Not unless it's over my dead body!

The hospital director, Victor Dabney, mentioned that Juliet had already lost the will to live. Further treatment would be meaningless.Juliet's mother, Alicia Moore, had been sobbing. When she saw me, she was stunned. "Hugo? Thank God! We have hopes of saving Juliet now—"Victor cut in. "Mrs. Stone, this is Mr. Shawn Gardner, the project lead for our hospital's collaboration. He's also the fiance of Apex MedTech's CEO."He turned to me. "Mr. Gardner, I heard your wedding to Ms. Thyme is set for next month. Congratulations in advance!"I thanked Victor politely.Alicia, on the other hand, refused to believe it."Hugo, I know Juliet wronged you, but she's dying. You cared enough to give her your heart back then. How can you just stand by and watch her give up on life now?"A sharp pain suddenly flashed in my chest. I said flatly, "I'm sorry. I don't know you or the Juliet you're talking about. You've mistaken me for someone else."If I had a choice, I would rather I had never kno

A few reception staff stood nearby, whispering as they watched."Ms. Stone is really something. I've only ever seen people in dramas get so heartbroken they cough up blood.""Yeah, I've seen that man before. He was handsome and soft-spoken. The rejection symptoms from the artificial heart must have been unbearable. What a shame."Juliet slowly sank to the floor, as if all strength had drained from her body. In the end, she stopped responding altogether. In the blink of an eye, I had lived abroad for nine months.During that time, news about Stone Group never left the trending lists.I used the money from selling the villa to start a modest but comfortable life abroad. In a small town, picturesque as a painting, I opened a guesthouse. In the mornings, I could drink fresh milk straight from the source. The fruits and vegetables were picked right from nearby fields.I no longer felt on edge all the time. I stopped overthinking everything. In return, my hair loss and insomnia slowl

Juliet stood over Luke, looking at him with complete indifference. His face turned deathly pale in an instant. He knew exactly what the Stone family was capable of and how far their influence reached."If Hugo doesn't forgive you," she said calmly, hatred slowly brewing in her eyes. "I don't think you need to live anymore."Luke, who had looked lifeless just moments ago, suddenly jolted upright. He shook his head violently. "N-No!"He broke down completely, shouting and begging her not to do this. At that moment, he realized that without me, Juliet had become unhinged. She didn't spare him another glance and walked away.…Back at the villa, Juliet picked up her phone and started calling everyone who might know me. From the first call to the 99th, no one knew where I had gone.I had grown up in an orphanage and only joined the Stone family as a caregiver when I entered college. Finally, Juliet called her parents. The answer was the same. On top of that, she was harshly scolded.

Two hours before the wedding, Luke showed up at the venue wearing a custom suit jacket that matched the groom's outfit.Juliet's tone sharpened with displeasure. "Why are you wearing that? I told you that if we want to keep this arrangement, Hugo can't find out anything! Change out of it now! And don't show up at the wedding today!"Luke appeared as if he had been wronged. He quickly grabbed her wrist. "Didn't you say you wanted to hit 100 spots with me? I just thought we could finish it at your wedding…"A suggestive smile formed at the corner of his lips. She hesitated for a moment. The next second, he pulled her in by the back of her head and kissed her.Soon, muffled sounds mixed behind the door, carrying through the narrow crack between it and the frame. Two hours later, Juliet finally finished her makeup and changed into her wedding dress before rushing out. As the riverside villa came into view, a growing sense of guilt settled in her chest. She was 40 minutes late on her

Perhaps remembering Juliet's order, Bailey said nothing in the end. When I arrived at the lobby, my phone rang. It was the assisted dying service calling."Mr. Jackson, your booking has been successfully confirmed. After death, your body will be cremated and, according to your request, scattered in the Pacifica Sea. Please provide your flight number, as we offer pick-up service."I was just about to give them a flight number when a familiar voice sounded behind me. "What flight? Honey, where are you going?"I turned and saw Juliet standing there, her expression a mix of every negative emotion. The moment I ended the call, she rushed over and grabbed my hand."Honey, who's booking a flight?""I was just planning our honeymoon and checking flight schedules," I replied.Maybe my expression was too calm, because Juliet didn't doubt me. Instead, she visibly relaxed."Honey, is this the surprise you mentioned? Silly you. Your heart isn't in great shape, and the doctor told you to res
