Chapter 8

Author: Crystal K
“I will not apologize.”

My voice cut through the murmuring crowd.

Zarya froze. “What did you say?”

“I said, I will not apologize.” I pointed to a nearby building. “There’s a security memory crystal on that building. It records everything. Shall we review the footage?”

Soren’s face went white.

“No… no need to trouble yourselves,” he said weakly. “It was probably just an accident…”

But his words were cut off by a pained groan.

“Energy backlash!” he clutched his chest, his face growing even paler. “The laurel tree’s repelling energy is too strong!”

Zarya immediately swept him into her arms. “Hold on. I’m taking you to the healers.”

She rushed across the street toward the healing center without a single glance back at me.

The crowd began to disperse, but the whispers continued.

“That Rhys is so cold-blooded.”

“The poor Omega got hurt, and he won’t even say sorry.”

“No wonder the Alpha prefers the gentle one.”

I stood there, staring at the healing center.

Then I turned and walked away.

The next day was the final day before the ceremony.

In the morning, I shipped all my luggage.

All that was left was a small backpack with my essentials and my plane ticket.

A 3 PM flight.

At ten that night, Zarya finally came home.

“How’s Soren?” I asked.

“Stable,” she said, her voice frigid. “The pack healer said if he hadn’t been brought in immediately, his life could have been in danger.”

“That’s good.”

Zarya walked up to me, the anger still simmering in her eyes.

“At the ceremony tomorrow,” she commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument, “you will publicly apologize to him.”

“What ceremony?”

“Our bonding ceremony.” She frowned. “Did you forget?”

I looked at her and suddenly wanted to laugh.

“Do you really think there’s still going to be a ceremony?”

“Of course there is. I’ve already notified all the elders.” Zarya’s tone grew impatient. “For the honor of the pack, you need to see the bigger picture.”

Her phone suddenly rang.

“Zarya, I’m not feeling well,” Soren’s voice came through the receiver. “Can you come be with me?”

Zarya stood up instantly. “I’ll be right there.”

She grabbed her coat and headed for the door.

“Nine AM tomorrow. Don’t be late,” she commanded without looking back. “The ceremony will start on time.”

The door clicked shut. Silence. Finally. I stood in the center of the apartment that was never truly mine. The words weren't for her. They were for me. A vow. A release.

“I, Rhys, reject you, Zarya.”

She was already gone.

I waited until morning.

I walked to the calendar. Today's date was circled in red. A celebration. A lie. I picked up a black pen and drew a vicious X through it. Then, I wrote two words across the date, pressing so hard the pen tore the paper.

Bond. Severed.

Then I grabbed my carry-on and walked out of the place I had once called home.

On the way to the airport, I sent a text to the Head Elder.

Initiate the severance rite. The bonding ceremony is canceled.

By 9:30 AM, my plane was in the air.

Below me, the city—this pack, my past, her—shrank until it was swallowed by the clouds.

I pictured her at the altar. Dressed in white. Waiting for the mate who was already gone. A queen without her Head Mate. A joke.

Rhys's POVTime crawled. My world narrowed to the flash of silver. A snarl. A scream of my name. And then—her. She slammed into me, a shield made of flesh and bone. The wolfsbane-laced blade, meant for me, sank into her chest. The sound was wet, final.“No—!”She collapsed into my arms, blood instantly soaking her white shirt. The silver poison began to spread, her skin turning pale before my eyes.“Zarya!” I held her, my hands frantically channeling my healing energy, trying to fight the toxin, my voice shaking with terror. “Why did you—”Through our bond, long broken but now forced open by the razor’s edge of death, I felt the two years of repressed regret and desperation she had carried.“Run…” she choked, blood frothing at her lips. “They’ll… come back…”The two attackers, rogues by their scent, froze, their faces paling as they recognized Zarya.“Alpha!” one of them stammered. “We didn’t mean to hurt you—”“Get out,” Zarya’s voice, though weak, still held absolute command. “If I s

Rhys's POV“It’s too late,” I said, looking down at Zarya, who stood before me like a supplicant.“For five years, you never truly loved me,” I began, ticking off her sins one by one.“You never once gave me a moonstone—the simplest symbol of affection between mates. You thought it was an unnecessary formality.”“My passions, my talents… you treated them as a boring hobby.”“You defiled the most sacred rite of our people, a bond blessed by the Goddess, for a pathetic, calculated lie.”Every word was a silver knife, twisting in her heart.“I… I didn’t think those things were important…”“Exactly. They weren’t important to you,” I looked down at her. “Let's be clear, Zarya. You don't miss me. You miss what I represented. You miss the idea of me. Your perfect, obedient Head Mate. You're not mourning a lost love. You're mourning your broken pride.”She looked up at me, the light in her eyes finally extinguished.“Let’s both keep some dignity and go our separate ways,” I said, heading for t

Rhys's POV“I have no need to save my ex-mate.”My voice was crisp in the silent hall. The blood drained from Zarya’s face.“Let’s go,” I said, taking Ilana’s hand to leave.“Wait!” Zarya called after us, her voice breaking with desperation. “Please, give me a chance!”I didn’t look back.Ilana drove me back to my parents’ house.“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice full of concern.“I’m fine,” I said, watching the city lights flash by. “I just didn’t expect to see her.”“We can go back to Switzerland early if you’re not comfortable.”“No,” I said, turning to her. “I won’t let anyone change my plans.”Ilana smiled gently. “That’s why I love you.”She stopped at my parents’ house, and I gave her a light kiss on the cheek before getting out.The moment I opened the door, I froze. There was someone sitting in the living room.Zarya.“Rhys!” my mother said, standing up. “You’re back.”I looked at Zarya on the sofa, my voice ice. “What are you doing here?”“I let her in,” my father said. “S

Zarya's POVAn hour later, I burst into the resort.Soren was lying in bed, reading a book. His face filled with panic when he saw me.“Zarya? What are you—”“The Blood Moon night,” I cut him off. “Five years ago.”His face went white. “What… what are you talking about?”“Who. Saved. Me?” I asked, enunciating every word.“It was me, of course…” his voice trembled.“Liar!” I roared. “I saw the memory crystal!”Soren’s book fell to the floor.“I… I helped…” he stammered. “We saved you together…”I walked toward him, staring into the eyes I had once thought were so kind. Now all I saw was fear and deceit.“Did you know he almost died saving me?”“I… I didn’t know he would use so much…”“You knew!” my voice was ice. “You knew he loved me, you knew he would do anything to save me, so you let him go first! Then you made sure you were the first person I saw when I woke up. You even erased my memory of him healing me!”All the ugly truths were laid bare. The report Rhys had thrown in my face f
