Chapter 5

Author: Crystal K
For the next week, my phone was flooded with notifications.

Soren’s social media had blown up.

A photo of him lying in bed at a luxury resort in the Rockies, Zarya sitting beside him, peeling an apple.

A photo of him in a hot spring, Zarya waiting by the pool with a towel ready.

A photo of him undergoing an energy scan, Zarya holding his hand tightly.

Every picture had the same caption: “Thank you, Zarya, for taking such good care of me. I’ve never felt so safe.”

He even posted a few vague statuses, hinting that he was suffering from undeserved misunderstandings but was willing to endure it all for his Alpha’s happiness.

I didn’t need to read the comments to know what they would say.

“The Alpha is so good to him.”

“This is what true love looks like.”

“What about the Head Mate, Rhys? We never see him.”

“I hear he’s busy with his career.”

I turned off my phone and continued packing.

On the third day, I drove to my parents’ house.

“Rhys?” my mother said, surprised, as she opened the door. “What are you doing here?”

“I need to talk to you both.”

In the living room, my father put down his newspaper and looked at me.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to Europe.”

“For a vacation?”

“For work. The Laureate Healers Guild invited me to a research project.” I took a deep breath. “I might be gone for a long time.”

My mother’s face fell. “What about your ceremony?”

“It’s been postponed.”

“Postponed?” My father frowned. “Why?”

“Zarya has some things to take care of,” I said, trying to sound calm. “We decided it would be better to do it later.”

My parents exchanged a look.

"Rhys." My mother's hand covered mine. Her voice was gentle, but her eyes were steel. "Don't lie to your mother. I can see the ghost in your eyes. What did she do to you?"

I closed my eyes. “It’s nothing, Mom. I just want to learn more while I’m still young.”

“Does Zarya agree?”

“She’s very supportive of my career.”

Another lie.

My father was silent for a long time before finally nodding. “If it’s for your career, we support you.”

“But you have to stay in touch,” my mother said, her eyes welling up. “Take care of yourself.”

After leaving my parents’ house, I texted Cole.

“Can you come help me pack?”

An hour later, Cole was at my apartment door.

“God, what happened here?” he asked, staring at the empty living room.

“I’m moving.”

“Moving where?”

“Switzerland.”

Cole just stared at me. “Okay. Spill. What the hell did she do?”

I told him everything.

From Zarya’s demand to mark Soren, to the diagnostic report, to the canceled trip to the Moon Spring.

When I finished, the room was dead silent.

Cole’s knuckles were white where he gripped his knees. When he finally looked at me, his face was thunderous. “That bitch,” he spat.

“She has her reasons.”

“What reasons? A life debt?” Cole stood up and paced. “Even if she owed him her life, she had no right to trample all over you like this!”

“Cole—”

“No!” He shot to his feet, pacing like a caged wolf. “I can’t listen to this. Does she not remember the Blood Moon? Five years ago, when you tore your own soul in half to save her from those rogues? You almost died for her, Rhys! And she repays you by choosing him?”

I turned my face away and said nothing.

Rhys's POV“You can.”My answer stunned everyone in the room.“Rhys?” Ilana looked at me, her eyes questioning.“If you want to come, you can come,” I said to Zarya. “But only to watch.”A flicker of light appeared in Zarya’s eyes. “Thank you.”The next morning, the doctor allowed Zarya to leave the hospital for a few hours.“But not for long,” he warned. “The silver poison isn’t completely purged.”Ilana had a formal invitation and a ceremonial moonstone brooch sent over for her.It was the highest courtesy for a guest. At 3 PM, the ceremony began. The location was beside the oldest Moon Spring in Switzerland. We were surrounded by the Alps, the snow-capped peaks glittering in the sun. The spring water was clear as a mirror, glowing with a soft, silver light.I wore traditional white ceremonial robes and a crown woven from laurel blossoms.Ilana wore a deep blue Alpha gown, the golden crest of the Sunstone Pack pinned to her chest. The Guild’s Head Elder officiated.“In the sight of t

Rhys's POVTime crawled. My world narrowed to the flash of silver. A snarl. A scream of my name. And then—her. She slammed into me, a shield made of flesh and bone. The wolfsbane-laced blade, meant for me, sank into her chest. The sound was wet, final.“No—!”She collapsed into my arms, blood instantly soaking her white shirt. The silver poison began to spread, her skin turning pale before my eyes.“Zarya!” I held her, my hands frantically channeling my healing energy, trying to fight the toxin, my voice shaking with terror. “Why did you—”Through our bond, long broken but now forced open by the razor’s edge of death, I felt the two years of repressed regret and desperation she had carried.“Run…” she choked, blood frothing at her lips. “They’ll… come back…”The two attackers, rogues by their scent, froze, their faces paling as they recognized Zarya.“Alpha!” one of them stammered. “We didn’t mean to hurt you—”“Get out,” Zarya’s voice, though weak, still held absolute command. “If I s

Rhys's POV“It’s too late,” I said, looking down at Zarya, who stood before me like a supplicant.“For five years, you never truly loved me,” I began, ticking off her sins one by one.“You never once gave me a moonstone—the simplest symbol of affection between mates. You thought it was an unnecessary formality.”“My passions, my talents… you treated them as a boring hobby.”“You defiled the most sacred rite of our people, a bond blessed by the Goddess, for a pathetic, calculated lie.”Every word was a silver knife, twisting in her heart.“I… I didn’t think those things were important…”“Exactly. They weren’t important to you,” I looked down at her. “Let's be clear, Zarya. You don't miss me. You miss what I represented. You miss the idea of me. Your perfect, obedient Head Mate. You're not mourning a lost love. You're mourning your broken pride.”She looked up at me, the light in her eyes finally extinguished.“Let’s both keep some dignity and go our separate ways,” I said, heading for t

Rhys's POV“I have no need to save my ex-mate.”My voice was crisp in the silent hall. The blood drained from Zarya’s face.“Let’s go,” I said, taking Ilana’s hand to leave.“Wait!” Zarya called after us, her voice breaking with desperation. “Please, give me a chance!”I didn’t look back.Ilana drove me back to my parents’ house.“Are you okay?” she asked, her voice full of concern.“I’m fine,” I said, watching the city lights flash by. “I just didn’t expect to see her.”“We can go back to Switzerland early if you’re not comfortable.”“No,” I said, turning to her. “I won’t let anyone change my plans.”Ilana smiled gently. “That’s why I love you.”She stopped at my parents’ house, and I gave her a light kiss on the cheek before getting out.The moment I opened the door, I froze. There was someone sitting in the living room.Zarya.“Rhys!” my mother said, standing up. “You’re back.”I looked at Zarya on the sofa, my voice ice. “What are you doing here?”“I let her in,” my father said. “S

I had changed. Two years of research had pushed my abilities to new heights.I was now the youngest Master Healer in the Guild’s history.More importantly, I had found peace.“So who’s the ‘we’?” Cole asked with a wink.I turned just as Ilana walked toward us.She wore a perfectly tailored black suit, her smile as warm as ever.“This is Ilana,” I said, my voice clear and steady as I took her hand. “My research partner… and my life partner. My chosen mate.”Cole looked from me to her, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. “You two…”“Yes,” I said, holding Ilana’s hand. “We’re together.”The celebration dinner was held at New York’s most luxurious hotel. The hall was filled with familiar faces.“If I could have your attention, please,” I said, raising my glass. “I h

Zarya's POVAn hour later, I burst into the resort.Soren was lying in bed, reading a book. His face filled with panic when he saw me.“Zarya? What are you—”“The Blood Moon night,” I cut him off. “Five years ago.”His face went white. “What… what are you talking about?”“Who. Saved. Me?” I asked, enunciating every word.“It was me, of course…” his voice trembled.“Liar!” I roared. “I saw the memory crystal!”Soren’s book fell to the floor.“I… I helped…” he stammered. “We saved you together…”I walked toward him, staring into the eyes I had once thought were so kind. Now all I saw was fear and deceit.“Did you know he almost died saving me?”“I… I didn’t know he would use so much…”“You knew!” my voice was ice. “You knew he loved me, you knew he would do anything to save me, so you let him go first! Then you made sure you were the first person I saw when I woke up. You even erased my memory of him healing me!”All the ugly truths were laid bare. The report Rhys had thrown in my face f
