Chapter 3

Author: Pansy Wilde
She didn't get to hit me and make it disappear with a little kindness afterward.

"What did you say?"

Blood trickled toward my eye. She stared at me, opening her mouth and closing it again.

"You want a divorce? Why?"

I remembered a hike we'd taken just after our wedding. An earthquake had trapped us in a cave.

She'd been hurt trying to protect me.

"It doesn't hurt," she kept saying. "As long as you're okay."

On her next birthday, I'd made a wish of my own: let us stay this happy for the rest of our lives.

Then I found the love letter Blake had written to her in high school. She'd kept every one.

She told me it was all in the past. I believed her.

But once she was pregnant, a constant uneasiness settled over me. A whole day without seeing her left me restless.

I went to her office one day and watched her fasten a necklace around Blake's neck.

The necklace she'd given me.

Blake, apparently, was going abroad to get married.

Soon afterward, Claire announced her own plans to study abroad. And then she left Evan and me behind.

I went to see her once without telling her I was coming.

I found her with Blake. They were walking with Ruby between them, each holding one of her hands, like a perfect little family.

I met Claire's eyes now and made every word clear.

"Because I stopped loving you a long time ago."

"No. That's not possible."

She gripped my shoulders.

"Is it because I hurt you? Is that why you're saying this? Why are you throwing away everything we had?"

I shoved her away. "Get away from me."

She was the one who'd abandoned us. She'd made that choice long before today.

A nurse hurried over.

"Dr. Bennett, the donor team has made the incision. They're ready for you to begin."

I stepped into Claire's path.

"I want to see that child. I need to know whether he's Evan."

Blake's face tightened. His voice shook.

"Please, Ethan. I'm a father, too. Ruby's about to go into surgery. Can't this wait until it's over?"

He held out his hands. "Let her have the operation, and I'll do anything you want. Anything. Losing her would kill me."

Claire took several deep breaths.

"Stop this. They've already started. A child's life is at stake. You locked Evan in the house—did you even think about whether he was safe?"

I laughed. I couldn't help it.

I was laughing at myself. At the fool I'd been to fall for a girl like that.

Thank God Victoria had been there for Evan all these years.

I bit down on my lip. They'd made an incision, the nurse had said. It felt as if the knife had gone into my chest.

"Then we'll let the police sort this out."

Panic flickered across Blake's face.

Officers arrived soon afterward, led by a detective who introduced himself as Marcus Hale.

"We need to speak to the child's parents or legal guardians," Hale told Blake. "A claim that he volunteered isn't enough. Can you have them come here?"

Blake clenched his jaw and refused to answer.

Claire began to look uneasy.

"Tell them. You said he was from a rural town, didn't you?"

Blake suddenly sank to his knees. Tears spilled down his cheeks.

"I wasn't trying to hide anything, Claire. He's an orphan. His grandparents are both disabled. I didn't want to talk about it."

He gave me an angry glance.

"The poor kid's been through enough. If Ethan hadn't kept pushing…"

He took a stack of documents from his bag and handed them over.

"Everything's here, Detective. The paperwork is complete. It's all aboveboard."

I leaned in to read the name. Owen Reed.

Had I really made a mistake?

According to the file, Owen's parents were dead, and his grandparents could no longer care for him. When they heard they could get seventy thousand dollars in exchange for his kidney, they agreed immediately.

"No. Don't say that, Ethan. I've always loved you."She reached for me."We can start over. I'm not a doctor anymore. I'll stay home. I'll take care of you for the rest of my life."I shook my head."Once I saw who you really were, there was no future left for us."Still on her knees, she wrapped her arms around my legs."Please. I can't live without you.""Claire."I crouched in front of her."Do you love me? Really? The person you love most is yourself. Even now, you can't take responsibility for what you've done."I freed myself, pulled her off me and left her by the side of the road. Then I walked away. She had no power over me anymore. She was nothing to me now, something I could step past and forget.Claire stayed there for a long time. That night, she took a knife and broke into Blake's home.No one expected her to be the one who died.Blake killed her while fighting back.Around the same time, the police found footage from a camera overlooking the parking lot o

Victoria quietly called the police.Evan said that on the day he disappeared, someone had contacted him through his watch and told him I was waiting at the amusement park. He'd thought it was strange. But the person knew so much about me.He'd gone where he was told, walking beyond the security cameras. That was where he thought someone had taken him.He remembered waking up briefly and seeing a man's face. Then he was drugged unconscious again. The next thing he remembered was being in the hospital."He looked familiar. I think I'd seen him before."With Hale's permission, I showed him a photo of Blake.Evan's eyes widened."That's him!"There was no mistaking it now.But Hale looked cautious."His statement gives us something to work with. We still need evidence that places Mr. Mercer with him."I told them about the messages Blake had shown us."His watch. Find Evan's watch. That should tell you what happened."Victoria squeezed my shoulder."Give them time. Let them

Evan desperately tried to burrow deeper into my arms.I looked at Claire coldly."You've never earned the right to be his mother."My words struck a nerve. She yanked him away from me and pulled him against her chest, her fingers digging into his arm.He screamed in terror."Ethan, can't we still make this work? Look at him. He looks so much like me. Why can't you give me another chance?"Tears filled her eyes."There's nothing between Blake and me. If you don't want him around, I'll cut him out of my life completely."She held Evan tighter."I won't let anyone hurt him. Ruby can live or die. It's nothing to do with us anymore."Please don't divorce me. I love you."Evan was sobbing so hard he could barely breathe, but she wouldn't let go."Sweetheart, Mommy's sorry. I hurt you and Daddy. Can you give me one more chance?"Her voice trembled. She sounded desperate.I took a long breath, forcing back the heat behind my eyes.Where had any of this been when it mattered?W

I nodded. "She hurt my son. I'm not letting her get away with it."Victoria smoothed a hand over my hair."Evan's my son, too, as far as I'm concerned. No one involved is walking away from this."I looked at her, ashamed of how much we'd needed her."I'm sorry for everything these past five years. Evan and I have put so much on you."When children at preschool had teased Evan for not having a mother, Victoria had come to me herself."Claire's away studying. The least I can do is be there for him."Before long, Evan was calling her Mom.She'd told me more than once, "I already think of him as my own. You don't need to feel guilty for letting me love him."Over those five years, I'd learned to trust her.But I'd never considered crossing that line.Victoria leaned close from behind."Ethan. Don't tell me you're going to love me and leave me.""What?"Heat shot into my face. She pulled back at once, smiling."I called you my future husband, and you didn't object. Backing ou

It was her own son. It was Evan."How?"Blood from the incision had reached the floor. Claire couldn't look away. Every drop seemed to accuse her.One of the nurses spoke, barely above a whisper."Dr. Bennett… Weren't you the one who wheeled him in yourself?"She had. Claire remembered now.She touched Evan's face with stiff fingers, then turned to Blake in disbelief. He stumbled over his words."The hospital must have mixed them up. How could they put Evan on the table? Claire, I'll get to the bottom of this. I promise."But all she could see was the terrible pallor of her son's lips."Get out. All of you."Her hands shook as she reached for the instruments to close the incision."What else has been done? Anything beyond the incision?"Only when a nurse said no did she let out a breath.Victoria took me outside. I barely had the strength to stand."He's going to be okay," she told me. "He will."I broke down sobbing.Half an hour later, they wheeled Evan out. He'd go

The police checked their records. A child named Owen Reed did exist. Now even Hale looked doubtful."Mr. Reed, are you certain your son is missing? Could he be hiding somewhere in the house?"No. That was impossible. I knew what I'd seen. Evan Reed."Please. Just go inside and look. Here's a photo of my son."Rachel immediately objected."You can't go in. The operating room is sterile, and Ruby's condition is critical. We have to proceed."Claire glared at me."Stop being so unreasonable. Because of you, Ruby is lying there alone on the operating table. Do you have any idea what you're putting her through?"She pointed toward the exit. "Go home and check. Evan will be there."Honestly, what kind of father are you? This is completely irresponsible."Blake fixed his eyes on me."I know I can't measure up to you, Ethan. But she's my only child. Why can't you just leave me alone?"I couldn't take another word.I kicked him hard enough to send him sprawling."Is lying about m
