Chapter 445

Author: Sienna Yates
Carter hadn't expected Sharon to respond that way. A flash of emotion briefly surfaced in his eyes, but it vanished almost instantly as he composed himself once more.

"Sharon, you're gambling on human nature. Have you considered the consequences if I insist you pay the price? Human nature is the one thing least worth wagering on."

Sharon replied calmly, "You were willing to divorce me for Kelly. You were ready to hand over 100 million to me. Compared to that, my injuring you is hardly worth mentioning."

She looked at him and smiled faintly.

"You're right. Human nature isn't something to bet on. But I never gambled on your guilt; I gambled on your feelings for Kelly. You forced me to hand over my studio, made me compose for her—that was your gamble on human nature, wasn't it? Carter, you can't expect to win every time."

Carter had always been a master manipulator, skilled at reading people's hearts. But unlike her, he had the resources. Even if he lost, the cost was never too high.

Sharon is right here. He may not be the instigator of John's problems but he surely was very eager to reap the bennefits it was going to bring him.

Maybe it's true, there's nothing more beautiful than a woman who's completely absorbed in what she loves.Carter's gaze remained fixed on Sharon. His eyes were sharp and impossible to ignore. But Sharon never once looked back at him.As the conversation continued, Kelly started to feel thirsty. "Nate, could you grab us some water?"Nate had been bored to tears during the entire discussion, stifling yawn after yawn. Now, hearing Kelly's request, he seized the chance like a drowning man clutching driftwood."Sure. I'll go get it. You two wait here." He turned to Carter. "Carter, they're talking shop. We'd only be in the way. Come with me?"Carter nodded slightly and followed him.By the time Sharon and Kelly had wrapped up the discussion, more than ten minutes had passed. Sharon closed the music sheets. "If that's all, I'll head to rehearsal now."The sky had fully darkened.A chill wind blew in from the lake, brushing strands of her hair into the air. The water, once serene and

Sharon glanced at the pianist, whose eyes were red and brimming with tears. She then shifted her gaze to the direction Carter had left. A cold, mocking smile tugged at her lips. All it took was one baseless accusation, and just like that, the pianist was out, her hard work dismissed like it meant nothing.Such a precise move. Classic fearmongering. Ruthless and effective. If that pianist was the chicken in this "warn-the-monkey" act, then she… She was the monkey. Not long after, Sharon received a call from Nate. He asked her to come by and go over performance details.…The venue had been rented at great expense by Carter for Kelly.Every inch of it whispered extravagance, needing no embellishment. Even the surrounding landscape was picturesque—a natural lake stretched out in the rear garden, its waters still and clear, while floral scents drifted lightly through the breeze.Sharon arrived in the garden and spotted Kelly standing on a small bridge with Carter. The two of them w

A free opportunity is still an opportunity. There was no reason not to take it.After exchanging a few words with her friends and giving Wendy some quick instructions, Sharon headed to the performance venue.Once there, it didn't take long for her to realize what kind of event this really was.The entire performance had been put together for Kelly. Sponsored exclusively by the Biggs and Hendricks families, the stage was Kelly's alone. Everyone else was just there to make her shine brighter.Sharon had seen this coming. When someone else foots the bill, the spotlight doesn't land by accident. She was just about to find Kelly when someone in the crowd shouted, "Kelly is hurt!" Chaos erupted in the rehearsal hall.Sharon quickly asked what had happened. Apparently, during the curtain call rehearsal, a female pianist had accidentally stepped on the long train of Kelly's skirt. Kelly had fallen and scraped her knee.Nate glared at the stunned pianist, his voice sharp and accusing.

Nate still didn't understand what was going on. "Ginny? You mean the Blakely family's eldest daughter? There's no way she knows Sharon. Kelly, you must be mistaken."Kelly replied, "If Sharon hadn't shown up with Ginny to meet me and Carter, I wouldn't have believed it either. But it's true. They know each other."The certainty in her tone left Nate no room to argue. He shook his head, struggling to make sense of it. "If Ginny would go that far to help Sharon, do you think maybe Sharon has something on her?"Kelly secretly cursed Nate for his stupidity. "You think someone like Sharon could threaten Ginny Blakely?"Nate scratched his head. Yeah, that was a stretch. Then a thought lit up in his eyes. "What if Sharon saved Ginny's life once, and maybe she's repaying that?"Kelly's gaze flickered slightly. That, at least, sounded plausible. She would rather believe Sharon had saved Ginny's life than accept the idea that Sharon could be on Ginny's level—that she might actually belon

Madeline frowned. "What are you yelling for? That's no way for a proper young lady to behave."Denise was unfazed. Her face lit up with excitement as she shoved her phone toward Madeline. "Mom, it's Ginny Blakely! She's coming to Amstern City to perform at a concert as a special guest!""Ginny Blakely?" Madeline's brows lifted slightly. "You mean the Blakely family's eldest daughter?"Denise nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! She's not just some privileged heiress; she's legit brilliant. People even compare her to Victoria Kalen, the number one socialite. She's my idol. No way I'm missing her performance."Madeline nodded thoughtfully. "An heiress like her is worth getting close to. If you manage to catch her eye and become her friend, the Biggs family could benefit tremendously."Denise sighed with admiration. "I heard she's performing to support a close friend. And her two besties—Carol and Melanie—they're both incredible too. Total legends at Bell University's Hall of Fame… I guess

But there was no denying the pressure they faced from their families.Sharon was technically a Kalen heiress, but she hadn't grown up in the Kalen family household. She'd never spent a cent of their money, and because of that, they couldn't shamelessly expect her to fulfill some so-called "family duty."Melanie grinned. "Sharon, that's exactly what I was waiting to hear! Thank God you didn't hesitate or start worrying about every little thing. If you had, I might've thought you were a lost cause."Carol nodded in agreement. "We're just dealing with a scumbag and a homewrecker. It's nothing we can't handle."As they spoke, they all turned toward Ginny.Ginny's smile remained impeccably composed, but her eyes were sharp."So Kelly thinks that just because she has a man backing her, she can bully Sharon without consequence? That because Sharon stands alone, she's an easy target? Well, she's not alone. She's got us, and no one gets to push her around like that."Melanie gave a fierc
