Chapter One: My Husband Left Me to Die

Selena pov

“Mark, open the door!”

I slammed both hands against the iron gate, my swollen belly aching as the infected screamed behind me.

“Mark, please! They're coming! Open the damn door!”

Through the narrow gap in the gate, I saw my husband standing beside Vivian, his arms wrapped around my stepsister's waist. Behind them, my father, stepmother, and several other members of Mark's family watched me like I was a stranger begging for scraps.

I was covered in blood. My shoes were gone, my legs trembled beneath me, and my baby had barely moved for the last hour.

“Mark, I'm carrying your child!” I screamed. “You promised you'd protect us!”

Vivian buried her face against his chest, laughing. “Oh, Selena. You still believe he cares about you?”

“Shut up, Vivian!” I shouted. “Mark, look at me! I'm your wife!”

Mark finally stepped toward the gate. For one foolish second, hope flooded my chest.

Then he looked me in the eyes and said, “You should have stayed where I left you.”

My breath caught.

“Where you left me?” I stared at him. “You took my money! All my savings! You told me we were preparing a safe place for our family!”

“And we did,” he replied. “For the people who matter.”

Vivian lifted her head and smiled at me. “You should have seen his face when he handed me the keys to our room. He said he couldn't bear the thought of me spending another night in fear.”

I stared at Mark, waiting for him to deny it, but He didn't. “You used my money to build this place,” I whispered. “You used everything I had, and now you're leaving me outside?”

“Don't make this difficult, Selena,” he said coldly. “You have always been good at making everything about yourself.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Everything about myself? I sold my jewelry to buy supplies for this family. I skipped meals to save money. I begged you to let me come with you when the first cases appeared, and you told me I was being paranoid. I trusted you because you were my husband!”

“And that was your mistake.” His words struck harder than any slap. Behind him, my father shook his head in disgust.

“This is what happens when you refuse to listen,” he said. “You have brought shame upon this family again.”

I turned toward him, tears blurring my vision. “Daddy, please. I'm your daughter. Your grandchild is in danger. You can't stand there and watch us die.”

My stepmother tightened her grip on Vivian's arm. “Don't call him that. You have caused enough trouble for everyone.”

“Trouble?” I choked out. “What have I done to deserve this?”

Vivian stepped closer to the gate, her beautiful face glowing with satisfaction.

“You were born with everything I wanted, Selena. Mother's love, Daddy's attention, a beautiful life. Even when I took Mark from you, you still had the nerve to marry him.”

“You knew he was my husband!” I said with a broken heart.

“And yet he chose me.” vivian said with a smile on her face.

She turned and kissed Mark's cheek. “Didn't you, darling?” Mark pulled her closer. “I never wanted Selena.”

I gripped the bars until my fingers hurt. “Then why did you marry me? Why did you let me into your life when you had someone you loved so much.

“My family wanted the marriage. You were obedient, desperate for affection, and easy to control. It was convenient.” he said looking at her straight in the eyes.

I shook my head, refusing to believe the man I had loved for years could look at me with such contempt.

“What about our baby?” I whispered. “You agreed to have a child with me. You held my hand at the hospital. You told me we would finally become a real family.”

For the first time, Mark laughed, Not just nervously or bitterly, but he laughed as if my pain were the funniest thing he had ever heard.

“Do you really think that baby is mine?” I stopped breathing for some second.

“What?”i shouted in confusion. “Your precious husband paid the fertility doctor to use another man's sperm,” Vivian announced, smiling at my horrified expression. “Mark never intended to father your child.” My hands went numb against the gate.

“No,” I whispered. “No, that's not true. You arw all lying, liers!”

Mark slipped one hand into his pocket. “I never wanted a child with you, Selena. I agreed to the IVF treatment because it kept you from disturbing me anymore. I paid the doctor to use a different man's sample, and you never suspected a thing.”

I stared at him, tears streaming down my face. “You let me believe you wanted our baby.”

“You wanted a child so badly that you were willing to believe anything I told you.”

I pressed a shaking hand against my belly. All those nights I had cried with happiness over the tiny life growing inside me. All those times I had imagined Mark holding our baby, finally looking at me with love.

It had all been a lie. “Why?” I asked, my voice breaking. “What did I ever do to you?”

“Nothing,” he replied. “I simply never loved you.”

The infected were getting closer. Their screams filled the street, mixed with the desperate cries of survivors running toward the warehouse.

I fell to my knees begging in fear and pain. “Mark, please. Hate me if you want. Take everything I have. I don't care anymore. Just open the door for my baby.”

I bowed my head against the iron bars. “Please. I'm begging you. My baby hasn't done anything wrong.”

For a moment, Mark said nothing. Then he turned his back on me.

“Close the inner gate,” he ordered. My heart shattered. “MARK!” i shouted with the last strength in me. The heavy metal door behind him began to slide shut.

I dragged myself upright and reached through the bars, desperately trying to catch his hand.

“Please! Just look at me one last time!” He didn't turn around let alone to hear me out.

Vivian glanced over her shoulder and gave me a final smile before the inner door slammed closed.

I was alone. A wave of pain tore through my abdomen. I cried out, clutching my belly as warm blood ran down my legs.

“No, no, please,” I sobbed. “Baby, hold on. Mommy is here. Mommy won't let anything happen to you.”

The first infected reached the street. Then the survivors came.

A crowd rushed toward the warehouse, pushing and screaming, desperate to get inside. Someone struck my shoulder. Another person stepped on my hand. I tried to crawl away, but there was nowhere to go.

“Please, I'm pregnant!” I screamed. “Don't step on me!”

Nobody stopped to help or listen to me, everyone was fighting for there life.

A boot came down against my stomach. I screamed until my voice broke.

The pain was unbearable, but worse was the terrible silence inside me.

“Baby?” I pressed both hands against my belly. “Please, sweetheart, Move, Just move for Mommy.”but no movement came unlike him, who kicks at a most every minute.

I dragged myself toward the gate, leaving a trail of blood behind me. Through the bars, I could still see the people who had once called themselves my family.

My father was sitting safely inside. My husband was holding Vivian.

They were eating, drinking, and laughing while I lay dying outside the shelter I had paid for. I struck the gate one last time.

“Mark…” My voice was barely a whisper. “Did you ever love me? Even for one day?” He glanced at me through the glass.

“No.” That single word killed the last piece of hope in my heart.

I lowered my head and wrapped my arms around my belly.

“I'm sorry, baby,” I whispered through my tears. “Mommy is sorry.”

My vision darkened. The screams around me faded, and the cold ground pressed against my cheek.

I had spent my entire life trying to earn love from people who never wanted to give it.

I had sacrificed my happiness for my father, my marriage for Mark, and my future for a family that had abandoned me without a second thought.

And now, I was losing the only person who had never had the chance to hurt me.

If I could live again, I would never beg Mark Ashford to love me. I would never sacrifice myself for my family.

And I would never allow anyone to touch my child. Never again.

“Selena! Wake up!” I jerked upright, gasping for air. My hands flew to my stomach, my baby.

I pressed my palms against my belly, terrified of what I might find.

A small movement fluttered beneath my skin. I burst into tears.“My Baby… is moving.” Wait...I was alive?

I looked around wildly. The bedroom was bright, the curtains were clean, and my phone was ringing on the bedside table.

No blood, no infected persons, No iron gate closing in my face. My phone screen displayed the date. lt was three months before the apocalypse.

I stared at it, unable to believe what I was seeing. Then I looked at the name flashing across the screen.

Mark Ashford, my husband. The man who had watched me die.

The man who had stolen my money, betrayed my trust, and confessed that my baby wasn't his.

The phone continued ringing. I answered it slowly.

“Selena,” Mark said impatiently. “Why are you ignoring my calls? I need you to transfer the rest of your savings today. Vivian has a collection of beautiful wears she need to buy.”

I stared at the wall as the memory of my death burned through me.

In my previous life, I had transferred every last naira he asked for, but This time, I smiled.

“Of course, Mark,” I replied sweetly. “I'll take care of it.” “Good. For once, try not to disappoint me.” and He hung up.

My smile disappeared.

I opened my banking application and checked my balance. My savings were still there. My jewelry was still mine. My baby was alive, and I had three months to prepare for the end of the world.

I wiped my tears and sat up. Mark thought I was the same foolish woman who would crawl back to him no matter how badly he treated me.

Vivian thought she could keep stealing everything that belonged to me.

My father thought he could abandon me and escape the consequences, No, This time the were all wrong.

I opened my contacts, found Mark's number, and changed his name. THE MAN WHO WILL REGRET EVERYTHING.

Then I opened my bank application and began moving my money into an account he knew nothing about. The apocalypse was coming and i need to be loaded cause when it comes it will be dangerous outside.

And this time, when Mark Ashford begged me to open the door, I would make sure he remembered every second I had spent begging him. Because I wasn't going to die for him again.

I was going to survive long enough to destroy everything he loved.
