Chapter 3

Autor: Lucky Plum
Everyone around us gave Sylvia strange looks, unable to understand what the nonspeaking woman was trying to say. Some even wondered if she was homeless.

Hearing that, I glanced at her clothes, which were torn and scuffed from a fall.

I felt nothing.

I used to feel sorry for her and stand up for her, but I wasn't going to make a fool of myself anymore. It wasn't worth it.

"Shane, how about getting together with some old friends? Sylvia can come too."

Joey had appeared at some point. He looked at me with a mocking smile.

I frowned and glanced at Sylvia. Her eyes widened, and she hurriedly waved her hands, trying to show me that she hadn't asked Joey to come.

"Sure," I said.

I looked at the new message Joyce had just sent me, and my heart grew even colder. Still, I kept my expression composed as I looked at the two people in front of me.

"Joey, your girlfriend will be there too, right?"

-

Quite a few of our classmates and friends had come to the gathering too. They teased Sylvia, Joey, and me about what I had done years ago, saying that true love had finally won.

"But wasn't Sylvia in love with Joey back then?"

The poorly timed question silenced everyone. They watched the three of us, eager to see what would happen next.

What a spectacle. Just how long was this charade going to continue?

I glanced at Sylvia and chuckled. "I don't care who she likes. I'm done with this mute woman. She's just an idiot who plays with wooden dolls."

Everyone fell silent. Back when Sylvia and I were together, many people had mocked me as a do-gooder with a savior complex.

All the while, Sylvia stayed safely on the sidelines while I defended her.

This was a new sight for everyone.

Sylvia stood there awkwardly as everyone laughed at her. She looked at me helplessly.

Why look at me?

I watched Joey turn away from Sylvia with clear annoyance, and I couldn't help but laugh at the sight.

"Wait a minute. I thought Joey had feelings for Sylvia too," I said. "Why don't we let Celine hear the sweet things you two say to each other? Or should we show her the doll Sylvia kept for Joey all these years?"

When I said that, everyone gasped. No one had expected things to get this interesting. They all looked at us with mixed expressions.

Celine Zeller, who had been quiet until then, looked upset.

"What are you talking about? Joey, are you still in touch with Sylvia? What's this about a doll?"

I scoffed when I saw Joey's face darken. Then I deliberately pulled out my phone, intending to play the recording.

"What are you doing? Don't even think about framing us! Everyone knows you're jealous of me! You married a woodworker who can't speak, and you can't compare to me. Now you want to ruin my life?" Joey yelled.

Furious, he shouted as he rushed toward me, as if he had no idea where I had gotten the recording.

The moment he grabbed me by the shirt, Sylvia, who had been sitting there in a daze, suddenly sprang to her feet. Somehow, she found the strength to force us apart.

She anxiously checked the red marks on my neck and signed to ask if I was okay.

I pulled away from her hand with a click of my tongue, then coldly averted my gaze.

Sylvia seemed ready to do something else, but Celine was already furious. Celine kicked Sylvia in the calf from behind, sending her to her knees.

"I knew there was a reason Joey suddenly invited you both! So he was after you all along! You're just a mute. Did you really think you could land someone out of your league?"

The others smiled mockingly at Sylvia.

Back then, even though she couldn't speak, Sylvia was proud, got good grades, and had me to protect her. People had at least treated her with some respect.

Now they no longer bothered to hide their contempt.

"She's still pretending to be so pure and innocent, just like back then." I heard someone in the crowd mock her.

I looked at Sylvia, who had been hit and couldn't even defend herself. The anger I felt over her lies had only eased a little.

"Sorry. Did I come at a bad time?" someone said.

Everyone turned in surprise to look at the person entering through the door.

"It's so lively here."

He stood up for me and took me away from Joey by force."It's okay now. I'll protect you from now on." Shane blushed, and he couldn't look me in the eye. Still, he kept talking and making plans for me. "You don't have to worr

"Sylvia, what the hell are you doing?" I yelled.Sylvia opened the door happily. The moment she saw me, her face lit up.The livestream was already over. She looked at me with bright eyes, as if expecting praise."Shane, what do you think of my idea?"I said nothing. I slapped Sylvia, hoping to knock some sense into her."Did you think ruining both our lives with that livestream would make things go back the way they were?" I snapped.I no longer felt any pity for her.I continued, "You and that lunatic Joey really are perfect for each other. I was the one who kept you two apart."Sylvia flew into a rage at my words, her expression turning feral. She grabbed my hand and kept insisting I was wrong."No! I'm not with him! Shane, we're married. Please don't say things like that!"I tried to yank my hand free, but as we struggled, I saw blood running from the corner of her mouth."Sylvia, have you lost your mind? What did you take?"She wiped the blood from her mouth. Her eyes

"Would you like this one? I started making it a long time ago, even before the one I made for Joey," Sylvia said.I froze and stared at the doll, unsure how to feel. The moment it touched my hand, I let go as if I'd been shocked. The doll fell to the ground and landed in the dirty mud."Forget it, Sylvia. We're divorced. You're just having trouble getting used to not having someone spoil you anymore," I said. "I don't care who you make dolls for from now on, or whether you keep making them at all.""No!" Sylvia cut me off. She fell to her knees in the mud and picked up the doll. She screamed at me in despair, her voice rising as the look in her eyes grew frantic. "What am I supposed to do? How can I make you believe that you're the one I love?"I looked at Sylvia, who had once seemed so distant and untouchable. Now she was covered in filth, staring at me in a miserable state."Take your trash back! What kind of junk is this? Get out! Stop bothering Shane, you shameless bitch!

Sylvia spoke softly, as if she still wasn't used to talking. She smiled and gazed at me with an almost obsessive look.Joyce's expression grew darker by the second. She stepped in front of me to stop Sylvia from staring at me.I took a few steps back without thinking, hoping to get away from these lunatics. But then an arm suddenly locked around my neck. Something cold and sharp pressed against my skin, and Joey's voice came from beside my ear.Shit. I had forgotten there was another nutcase here."Shane, you know what? I've been jealous of you and hated you since we were kids. I never loved anyone. As long as I could make you suffer, I was willing to do anything. So why don't we die together now? Then I won't have anything left to resent."I broke out in a cold sweat. The people nearby who recognized us were terrified, too. They hurried away, whispering our names as they went. However, that only made Joey more agitated."Shut up! You don't know anything about me!" Joey shouted

Everyone else began to shun Sylvia, too. Back then, she had given up many career opportunities over a wooden doll for Joey, and I had helped her fix the mess she had made. Now she wanted to return, but no one was willing to take her back."I threw that doll away, Shane. I've made one for you. Isn't that what you've always wanted?"Sylvia's hands were covered in cuts and scratches. It looked like she had put a lot of effort into it.I had wanted one so badly before, and now I could have one without even trying. But I don't want it anymore."Sylvia, you've got some nerve! How dare you delete me?"Joey stormed over. When he saw me, he froze for a moment, then quickly gave me a look of contempt."What? Are you jealous? Your wife pretended to be nonspeaking for years just to fool you, all to help me get back at you."I nodded and smiled as if I didn't care. Then I took out my phone and turned off the recording. I paid no more attention to the two of them and headed inside.Syl

  • Silent Betrayal   Chapter 4

It was Joyce.I raised an eyebrow at her, not at all surprised. I thanked her for telling me the truth, but she looked a little disappointed as she glanced at Sylvia on the floor.Joyce rarely came to events like this. The moment she arrived, everyone forgot about the drama and rushed over to get close to the young heiress."Shane, don't be mad. That was all in the past. You're the only one I love. Please let go of your grudge against Joey," Sylvia signed. She was still doing it all for Joey. Even now, she refused to tell me the truth.Watching Sylvia keep insisting that she was loyal to me only made the whole thing more ridiculous. I forced a smile, nodded, and finally gave up on her for good.As Sylvia looked at me with joy, I stepped forward and hugged her. "It's fine. It's all okay now. Bye, Sylvia. I'm going to check on the studio."Sylvia happily hugged me tight and nodded eagerly, but she wouldn't let go for a long time."I don't know why, but I feel like you won't come
