Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Plum
"Get out. All of you!"

I closed my eyes and ignored my former coworkers' attempts to comfort me, whether they meant it or not.

I asked the doctor to call security and have them all thrown out.

[I don't want you to keep being lied to.]

It was when I returned home after recovering from my injuries, still feeling groggy, that I received this text.

It was from Joyce Culver, whom I hadn't spoken to in years. She suddenly sent me the entire recording from back then.

The recording captured Joey's deep, affectionate laughter, along with Sylvia's incoherent murmurs, which I knew better than anyone.

"Sylvia, I'll accept your gift if you stay with Shane. We grew up together, and he likes you so much. Can you do me this favor? It's not like you'll lose anything."

"Okay. I'll do it."

My heart sank as I listened to that gentle, feminine voice. At some point, tears had begun streaming down my face.

For eight years, Sylvia hadn't spoken a single word, all because Joey had asked her to.

As the recording continued, I felt worse and worse. It hurt even more than when Sylvia had left me behind in that fire.

So she had been lying from the very start when she told me she loved me.

I looked at our wedding photo hanging on the wall and remembered the vows we had made.

Then I turned and hurled my phone at the frame, smashing it to pieces.

Sylvia was startled when she walked in and saw what happened. Still, she kept her expression composed, thinking I'd come and comfort her like I always had.

I sat silently on the couch without saying a word.

"What happened today was an accident. I really did want to see you. Is your hand okay now?"

She finally seemed unable to hold back and began signing to me, but I kept my head down and refused to look at her.

Sylvia kept signing, even though I wasn't watching. Even as her arms grew sore, she didn't dare lower them.

Instead, she looked at me with that same pitiful expression she always gave me.

"If you can't speak, then don't make those awful noises either. They're grating on my nerves," I said harshly, leaving Sylvia frozen in place.

She had been about to bandage my wound, but she pulled her hand back in shock.

I had never mocked her for being unable to speak before. This was the first time.

Thinking about the woman I had loved for over a decade only made me feel more disgusted with her.

Fed up with her, I closed my eyes and refused to look at her again.

-

"Martin, I'm coming back to the studio. As for Sylvia, I'm done with her," I said.

"Shane, you're finally back! You've finally decided to let Sylvia go?"

Martin Lowe hurried over to me. There were dark circles under his eyes, but he looked eager to vent.

When he heard me mention Joey, his expression darkened, too.

I looked at the trophies and design plans in the studio, feeling as if I had stepped into a life I had left behind long ago.

I had spent all these years focused on Sylvia and completely forgotten who I used to be.

Joey and I grew up together, but we had never gotten along. I couldn't stand the way he kept picking on Sylvia because she couldn't speak.

One day, he deliberately sent her out to buy something for him in the pouring rain.

Furious, I rushed over and grabbed her hand.

"Are you stupid or something? Why would you do anything he tells you to? Can't you speak up?"

But when I looked into Sylvia's tearful eyes, my heart suddenly skipped a beat.

I wiped the rain from my face, feeling a little guilty. I had forgotten that she really couldn't speak.

Sylvia just stared at me blankly, never showing the slightest impatience. She simply nodded meekly and gave me a warm, gentle smile.

Even after we got together and had been married for years, I never forgot that moment.

I had given up my own dreams and devoted myself to helping Sylvia achieve hers.

Now, I knew it had been all a lie from the start. Joey had simply used her to get back at me.

At that thought, I sighed and exchanged a smile with Martin. "I'm not leaving again. This time, I'll stand by all of you."

Getting back to work was exhausting, but it also made me feel fulfilled again. I would have been even happier if I hadn't seen Sylvia again.

"Why haven't you come home yet?" Sylvia looked worn out. She seemed genuinely worried about me and signed to me in a hurry.

I ignored her, just as others had deliberately ignored her before. I left her standing there while I chatted with the others at the studio.

"Sylvia, what the hell are you doing?" I yelled.Sylvia opened the door happily. The moment she saw me, her face lit up.The livestream was already over. She looked at me with bright eyes, as if expecting praise."Shane, what do you think of my idea?"I said nothing. I slapped Sylvia, hoping to knock some sense into her."Did you think ruining both our lives with that livestream would make things go back the way they were?" I snapped.I no longer felt any pity for her.I continued, "You and that lunatic Joey really are perfect for each other. I was the one who kept you two apart."Sylvia flew into a rage at my words, her expression turning feral. She grabbed my hand and kept insisting I was wrong."No! I'm not with him! Shane, we're married. Please don't say things like that!"I tried to yank my hand free, but as we struggled, I saw blood running from the corner of her mouth."Sylvia, have you lost your mind? What did you take?"She wiped the blood from her mouth. Her eyes

"Would you like this one? I started making it a long time ago, even before the one I made for Joey," Sylvia said.I froze and stared at the doll, unsure how to feel. The moment it touched my hand, I let go as if I'd been shocked. The doll fell to the ground and landed in the dirty mud."Forget it, Sylvia. We're divorced. You're just having trouble getting used to not having someone spoil you anymore," I said. "I don't care who you make dolls for from now on, or whether you keep making them at all.""No!" Sylvia cut me off. She fell to her knees in the mud and picked up the doll. She screamed at me in despair, her voice rising as the look in her eyes grew frantic. "What am I supposed to do? How can I make you believe that you're the one I love?"I looked at Sylvia, who had once seemed so distant and untouchable. Now she was covered in filth, staring at me in a miserable state."Take your trash back! What kind of junk is this? Get out! Stop bothering Shane, you shameless bitch!

Sylvia spoke softly, as if she still wasn't used to talking. She smiled and gazed at me with an almost obsessive look.Joyce's expression grew darker by the second. She stepped in front of me to stop Sylvia from staring at me.I took a few steps back without thinking, hoping to get away from these lunatics. But then an arm suddenly locked around my neck. Something cold and sharp pressed against my skin, and Joey's voice came from beside my ear.Shit. I had forgotten there was another nutcase here."Shane, you know what? I've been jealous of you and hated you since we were kids. I never loved anyone. As long as I could make you suffer, I was willing to do anything. So why don't we die together now? Then I won't have anything left to resent."I broke out in a cold sweat. The people nearby who recognized us were terrified, too. They hurried away, whispering our names as they went. However, that only made Joey more agitated."Shut up! You don't know anything about me!" Joey shouted

Everyone else began to shun Sylvia, too. Back then, she had given up many career opportunities over a wooden doll for Joey, and I had helped her fix the mess she had made. Now she wanted to return, but no one was willing to take her back."I threw that doll away, Shane. I've made one for you. Isn't that what you've always wanted?"Sylvia's hands were covered in cuts and scratches. It looked like she had put a lot of effort into it.I had wanted one so badly before, and now I could have one without even trying. But I don't want it anymore."Sylvia, you've got some nerve! How dare you delete me?"Joey stormed over. When he saw me, he froze for a moment, then quickly gave me a look of contempt."What? Are you jealous? Your wife pretended to be nonspeaking for years just to fool you, all to help me get back at you."I nodded and smiled as if I didn't care. Then I took out my phone and turned off the recording. I paid no more attention to the two of them and headed inside.Syl

It was Joyce.I raised an eyebrow at her, not at all surprised. I thanked her for telling me the truth, but she looked a little disappointed as she glanced at Sylvia on the floor.Joyce rarely came to events like this. The moment she arrived, everyone forgot about the drama and rushed over to get close to the young heiress."Shane, don't be mad. That was all in the past. You're the only one I love. Please let go of your grudge against Joey," Sylvia signed. She was still doing it all for Joey. Even now, she refused to tell me the truth.Watching Sylvia keep insisting that she was loyal to me only made the whole thing more ridiculous. I forced a smile, nodded, and finally gave up on her for good.As Sylvia looked at me with joy, I stepped forward and hugged her. "It's fine. It's all okay now. Bye, Sylvia. I'm going to check on the studio."Sylvia happily hugged me tight and nodded eagerly, but she wouldn't let go for a long time."I don't know why, but I feel like you won't come
