Chapter 17

After the ceremony people kept walking up to us to say condolences and I got tired of engaging in a conversation with strangers, I saw Veronica standing awkwardly watching people, then I waited for the perfect moment to escape and when it did, I took off. It would take some minutes before Mum notices I'm gone. 

I walked towards her. 

"Hey, you're ready to meet my mum?" I smiled weakly. 

I was so tired of talking about my dad with total strangers. I still talked about him like he was still here and to realise he was not. 

I needed a break from all this and a hug.

Veronica stood on tiptoe, and gave me a big tight hug, snuggling me which shocked me so much I became rigid, not reciprocating. 

She just held me tighter, and after a few seconds, I relaxed, burying my head in the nook of her neck. She smelled like lavender. This was slowly becoming my favorite scent.
