Mariana’s POV

For a moment, nobody in the hall moved.

Zayan’s hand was still wrapped around the soldier’s throat, his expression frighteningly calm as the man struggled uselessly against his grip. I could feel the tension spreading through the room, every wolf watching the scene unfold with wide eyes. I quickly reached for Zayan’s free hand and gently squeezed it. “It’s okay,” I murmured. “You can let him go now.”

His eyes moved to mine.

For a second, he said nothing. Then he released the man.

The soldier crashed onto the floor, coughing and clutching his throat. Zayan didn’t spare him another glance. Instead, he turned slightly toward one of his guards. “Take him outside. And make sure he understands that putting his hands on my mate again will have consequences.” The guard bowed immediately. “Yes, My Lord.” Two other guards stepped forward, dragged the shaken soldier to his feet, and escorted him out while the entire hall remained silent.

Zayan then turned back to me.

He took my hand as though nothing had happened. The simple gesture seemed to shock everyone more than anything else.

I caught Nicholas staring.

His face had gone completely rigid, while Wren looked as though someone had just slapped her. Her mouth was slightly open, her eyes fixed on our joined hands. I could practically see the questions running through her mind. He actually came for Mariana? He called her his mate? He touched her like that in front of everyone?

Zayan, however, seemed completely unaffected by the attention. He simply looked down at me and gave my hand a gentle squeeze before turning toward Clarissa and Felix.

“So,” he said, his expression softening, “you must be Clarissa.”

Clarissa looked stunned for half a second before smiling brightly. “Yes, My Lord.”

Zayan inclined his head. “I’ve heard quite a lot about you. You’re my Luna’s most trusted friend. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.”

Clarissa’s smile became even wider. “And it’s a pleasure to finally meet you too.” She glanced at me briefly, then back at him. “Mariana has told me so much about you.”

I immediately felt my face heat.

Zayan’s eyebrow rose. “Has she?”

Clarissa laughed. “Some good things.”

“Clarissa,” I warned.

She only laughed harder.

Felix stepped forward and bowed respectfully. “My Lord, we’re honored that you came.”

Zayan shook his hand. “Congratulations. I hope you both have a long and happy life together.”

“Thank you, My Lord.”

Zayan turned toward his guards. “Bring the gifts.”

I blinked.

“Gifts?”

He looked at me as though it were obvious. “Did you think I came empty-handed?”

Within moments, several guards entered carrying beautifully wrapped boxes. There were enough of them to make Clarissa’s eyes widen.

“Zayan, you didn’t have to do all this,” I said.

“I know.”

Clarissa stared at the gifts. “My Lord, this is far too much.”

“It’s not.”

Felix immediately shook his head. “It really is. We are already grateful that you came.”

Zayan smiled. “Then accept them as a wedding blessing.”

Clarissa looked genuinely touched. “Thank you. Truly.”

I watched her open one of the smaller boxes and reveal an exquisite piece of jewelry. Her eyes widened.

“Oh, Mariana…”

I laughed. “Don’t look at me. I didn’t choose it.”

Clarissa looked at Zayan. “You chose all of this?”

“Some of it.”

She smiled. “Then thank you.”

After a little more conversation, Zayan glanced toward the windows. The sun had already begun to lower in the sky.

“We should leave soon,” he said quietly. “Frostcrest is still a journey away, and I don’t want us arriving too late.”

I nodded.

He turned to me and extended his hand.

“My Lady, are you ready?”

I smiled and took it.

“Almost.”

I turned and hurried back toward Clarissa, wrapping my arms around her.

“I’ll miss you.”

She hugged me tightly. “I’ll miss you too.”

“You better write to me.”

“I will.”

“And take care of Felix.”

She laughed. “I’ll try.”

I pulled away and looked at her one last time before turning toward the door. As I passed Wren, I glanced at her.

She was still staring at me.

Then I gave her a small scoff and walked away,i didn’t need to say anything.

The message was clear enough.

I was no longer the girl who had left Mountcrest in tears.

Behind me, I heard Nicholas introduce himself to Zayan’s guards, attempting to regain some of the importance he had lost. “I’m Nicholas, one of the highest-ranking warriors under Master Graham. And this is my lady, Wren.”

Zayan barely looked at him.

His attention remained on Clarissa and Felix as they continued thanking him for the gifts.

And somehow, that dismissal felt better than any insult I could have given Nicholas myself.

Soon, I was inside the carriage beside Zayan, and the familiar walls of Mountcrest slowly disappeared behind us.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke. I stared through the window, watching the landscape blur past.

Then Zayan broke the silence.

“Are you planning to remain quiet for the entire journey?”

I looked at him.

He had a faint smile on his face.

“Since when did my bold little wolf become so quiet?”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m not quiet.”

“You’ve barely spoken since we left.”

“I’ve just got a lot on my mind.”I laughed softly.

He leaned back against the seat. “I’d love to hear about it.”

I looked down at my hands.

“I wanted to thank you.”

“For what?”

“For today.”

He shrugged. “I was only standing up for my mate.”

My heart skipped at the way he said it so casually.

My mate.

He looked at me again, and his expression softened.

“You looked beautiful today, by the way.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“Your dress.” His eyes moved over me appreciatively. “It suits you.”

I immediately looked toward the window.

“Uhmm…thank you.”

“I think I’ll have the royal tailor make you more.”

I turned back. “More?”

“Yes. Several.”

“You don’t have to.”I laughed, trying to conceal the thoughts running through my head.

He reached for my hand, intertwining our fingers.

“You should have beautiful things, Mariana.”

I didn’t know what to say to that.

So I turned back toward the window, pretending to be fascinated by the passing trees while my cheeks burned.

The journey continued with little conversations scattered between comfortable silences. By the time Frostcrest finally came into view, the sky had darkened considerably.

When the carriage stopped in front of the palace, Zayan stepped out first.

He turned and offered me his hand.I placed mine in his, and he helped me down.

The moment my feet touched the ground, he didn’t let go.

Instead, he looked at me with a mysterious smile.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“Nothing.”

“Zayan.”

He chuckled.

“I have a surprise for you.”

I frowned.

“A surprise?”

“Yes.”

“What kind of surprise?”

“If I tell you, it won’t be much of a surprise anymore.”

I narrowed my eyes suspiciously.

He laughed, then gently pulled me closer by the hand.

“Come with me, little wolf.”

And with that, he led me toward the palace, leaving me with absolutely no idea what he had planned.

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    Chapter sixteen

Mariana pov The library had turned into a battlefield.Books were scattered across the floor, shelves had been knocked sideways, and the large wooden table that once sat in the center of the room had been pushed against the wall. I could barely keep track of everything happening around me. My father and Zayan were moving so quickly that all I could see sometimes was the flash of their swords and the blur of their bodies as they clashed. Master Graham was far more skilled with a sword than I had expected, and although Zayan clearly had the upper hand, he wasn’t fighting with his full strength. It was almost as though he was deliberately holding back, perhaps because this was still my father, perhaps because he wanted answers before he ended everything.I turned my head for a moment and saw Wren still being held by two of Zayan’s guards. She struggled against them, but there was nowhere for her to go. Her face was twisted with anger as she watched the fight unfold. I turned back jus

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    The one who was never there

Zayan’s POVSomething was wrong.I had known it long before the hour was over.At first, I told myself Mariana was simply taking her time. Perhaps her father had agreed to the peace talk, and the two of them were discussing the terms. Perhaps she was trying to convince him to stand down, just as she had promised me she would. But as the minutes passed, the silence between us became unbearable.I reached for her through our bond.Mariana?Nothing.I tried again.Little wolf, can you hear me?Still nothing.I could feel her heartbeat faintly. That was the only thing keeping me from storming into the Graham territory immediately. She was alive. I knew that much. But I couldn’t feel her thoughts. I couldn’t sense her emotions. I couldn’t hear the little voice that had become so familiar inside my mind.My jaw tightened. It had been more than an hour.I had given her only a few minutes to speak with her father before she was supposed to signal us. Something was wrong.“Stay here,” I ordere

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    The betrayal

Mariana’s POV A couple of days passed, and Frostcrest was ready for war.The council chamber was filled that morning with the kingdom’s highest-ranking soldiers, commanders, and council members. Maps of Mountcrest and the surrounding territories were spread across the long table, with markers indicating the Graham mansion, the roads leading into the territory, and the safest places for Frostcrest’s army to camp. Zayan stood at the head of the table, still carrying faint traces of his injuries beneath his armor, but there was no weakness in his posture anymore. He looked every bit like the warlord the entire empire feared. I stood beside him, listening carefully as he went over the plan one final time.“Mariana will travel ahead in the carriage,” Zayan explained, pointing toward the Graham territory on the map. “She’ll enter the mansion alone with only the guards assigned to her. Our forces will remain outside the borders of Mountcrest and establish camp where they won’t be detected.

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    Before the war

Mariana’s POV I ran toward him without thinking. My knees hit the floor beside him, and I immediately reached for his head, pulling him gently into my arms. His breathing was uneven, his skin colder than it should have been, and there was still blood at the corner of his mouth. “Zayan,” I whispered frantically, brushing his hair away from his face. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” For a man who had just been shot with a silver-laced arrow, beaten by his enemies, and nearly watched his entire kingdom fall apart, he somehow managed to look at me and smile.Actually smile.I stared at him in disbelief. “Why are you smiling?”His smile only grew a little wider.Tears immediately blurred my vision. I had spent the last few minutes convinced I was going to lose him, and now he was lying in my arms looking at me as though I were the one who needed comforting. A tear slipped down my cheek before I could stop it. Zayan lifted his trembling hand and wiped it away with his thumb. “I don’t like i

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    The golden phoenix

Mariana’s POV There he was.Nicholas stood at the end of the corridor with that same infuriating smirk on his face, slowly making his way toward us. Behind him were the guards from Mountcrest, men I recognized from my father’s household, their weapons drawn and their expressions filled with the confidence of people who believed they had already won. My entire body went rigid. I could feel the rage rising inside me so quickly that it almost made it difficult to breathe. I looked at Zayan, who was still on one knee, one hand pressed against his chest. Blood was slipping between his fingers, staining his clothes, and for the first time since I had met him, I saw something I had never imagined I would see. Weakness. Zayan had taken worse injuries than this. I had watched him return from battles covered in blood and still stand as though nothing in the world could bring him down. So why was an arrow enough to make him struggle for breath?“You?” I whispered, staring at Nicholas. Then m

  • Sold To The Ruthless warlord    The warning

Mariana’s POV The next morning, sunlight streamed through the curtains and painted warm patches across the bed. I stirred beneath the covers, still half-asleep, before slowly opening my eyes. The first thing I saw was Zayan sitting beside me, already dressed, his attention fixed on me. The moment he noticed my eyes open, a smile appeared on his face. “Good morning, sleepy little wolf,” he murmured. “I’ve been waiting for you to wake up.” I blinked at him, still trying to gather my thoughts. “How long?” He shrugged. “Long enough to consider sending Clara in here to wake you.” I groaned and pulled the blanket over my face. His quiet laughter followed. “Come on. We need to go get breakfast before I go to the council. I have a meeting this morning, but I wanted to eat with my wife first.” The word wife still made something warm bloom inside me. I finally pushed the blanket away and smiled at him.The maids came in shortly afterward and helped me get ready. Once I was dressed, Zayan a
