THE PUNISHMENT

~GISELLE POV~

The ride home was fast and filled with embarrassment.

I sat behind Alessandro on the ATV, holding on to his waist so I wouldn't fall off as he drove over the bumpy ground.

My chest was pressed against his back, soaking in his heat. Every bump in the trail forced our bodies to collide, a shocking reminder of how different we are physically.

I was exhausted. My legs burned from the run. My wrist throbbed where he had twisted it. My ego was bruised darker than my skin.

‘You passed,’ he had said.

It didn't feel like a passing grade. It seemed like he had just shown that my leash had no limits, but he was always holding the handle.

He drove the ATV right up to the front steps, skidding to a halt on the gravel. He killed the engine.

"Off," he commanded.

I climbed off, my legs wobbling. I looked down at myself. I was covered in mud. Leaves were tangled in my hair. My new sneakers were ruined. I looked like a swamp creature.

"I need to shower," I muttered, turnin

THE TOUCH~GISELLE POV~The Met Gala couldn't compare to the dark and flashy vibe of a Mafia meeting that pretended to be a charity event. The ballroom sparkled with gold decorations and crystal chandeliers. It felt super stuffy and warm inside, and the air was filled with fancy perfume that tried to hide a bad smell. A lot of people looked toward the entrance when the big double doors swung open. Alessandro and I were at the top of the fancy marble stairs. The emerald silk dress felt heavy on me, hugging my body tight. The slit went up high on my thigh, and the diamond choker felt cold and tight around my neck."Head up," Alessandro murmured, his hand resting on the small of my back. It wasn't a gentle touch; it was a hold."They are looking for cracks. Don't show them any."We came down. The room was completely quiet. The orchestra was playing a familiar Mozart song and briefly lost its beat before speeding up. The crowd moved aside, making a clear path for us.I heard the whispe

THE GALA INVITATION~GISELLE POV~Three days. That was how long it had been since the chase in the woods. Since I had sat on his lap in front of his captains. I had spent those three days testing the boundaries of the house. I found that I could go to the library. I could go to the gym (under supervision). I could go to the balcony. But the moment I stepped onto the grass, a shadow appeared…a guard, silent and armed, reminding me of the invisible line I wasn't allowed to cross.I was reading a law textbook in the living room….pretending to study, mostly just dissociating….when the front door opened.Alessandro arrived suddenly, like a cold wind.He was already in a tuxedo. A black dinner jacket, a crisp white shirt, a silk bowtie left undone around his neck. He looked devastating. He looked like the devil on his way to a masquerade. He didn't look at me. He looked at his watch."You’re not ready," he observed, stopping in the center of the room.I didn't look up from my book. "Ready

THE CAPTURE~ALESSANDRO POV~She bit me.I was dragging her toward the ATV, my grip on her wrist firm but careful….I didn't want to bruise the bone, just control the movement….when she twisted like a feral cat. She didn't scream. She didn't beg. She sank her teeth into the fleshy part of my hand, right between the thumb and forefinger.Pain, quick and sudden, shot up my arm.I swore, my grip loosening on reflex.Giselle didn't hesitate. She didn't wait to see if I was angry. She ripped her arm free, shoved me backward with a force that surprised me, and bolted. She didn't run back toward the fence. She realized that was a dead end. She quickly moved to the side and jumped into a bush of rhododendrons where the ATV couldn't go.I stood there for a second, looking at the crescent-shaped bite mark on my hand. A droplet of blood welled up, dark red against my skin.I brought my hand to my mouth, licking the blood away. It tasted metallic. It tasted like her anger.A dark, twisted smile pu

THE ESCAPE ATTEMPT~GISELLE POV~The diamond necklace felt like ice on my neck. I was in the dark bedroom, looking at the ceiling. My fingers touched the cold platinum choker. It was beautiful, but it was also suffocating me.Alessandro was asleep next to me. Or maybe he wasn't. Maybe he was just pretending, listening to my breathing and watching the data from the necklace on his phone. He was probably thinking, "She's calm. She's under control."I hated him. I hated how he looked at me, like I was a rare butterfly he had just caught. He called me "my prize."I turned away from him. The clock showed 4:47 AM. It was late, when the world was quiet and the guards were probably tired.I sat up. The necklace felt heavy, pulling my head down. Alessandro didn't move. He was breathing normally. He had warned me: "If you take it off, I'll know." And, "If you run, I'll find you."He was so arrogant, so sure of his technology and his security. He thought a $5 million collar would break me? He

THE GIFT~GISELLE POV~The knife tied to my ankle felt heavier than the wedding ring on my finger.I spent the afternoon pacing the size of the living room, trying to get used to the feeling of the ceramic blade rubbing against my skin. Every step was a reminder: ‘You are hunted. You are a target. You are worth half an empire.’The sun started to go down, making long orange lines in the grey Atlantic ocean outside the fortress windows. The house became darker, with shadows spreading across the marble floors like fingers reaching out."Mrs. Romano?"I jumped, spinning around. My hand instinctively went to my leg, hovering over the hidden holster. It was just Martha. She looked at me with her usual cold-blooded face, holding a silver tray with a decanter of water."The Boss wishes to see you in his office," she said. "Immediately."My pulse spiked. Since the will reading this morning, Alessandro has been in the west wing, giving orders on the phone and arranging security teams. I hadn
