Morwenna's POV

We rushed toward the scream, the narrow tunnel echoing our footfalls like war drums. Elda moved surprisingly fast for someone her age, her cane clicking against the stone rhythmically. My lungs burned, and yet I didn’t slow. That voice had sounded too familiar; raw, terrified, and human.

The air thickened. Not just with dust, but magic. Old, dense magic that pulled at the skin like cold fingers. The screaming had stopped, but something else had taken its place, a rhythmic thudding. Like a heartbeat. Or footsteps.

We reached a split in the tunnel. Elda didn’t hesitate. She veered left.

"Who was that?" I asked, breathless.

"A warning," she said. "But not meant for us. It called to what sleeps beneath."

The tunnel opened into another chamber—this one circular, with high walls etched in blood-colored runes. Chains hung from the ceiling, and in the center, bound by those very chains, was Lira.

My breath caught. "Lira!"

Her eyes were wide, unfocused. Bruises marred her neck,

  • Sold to the Lycan King   Chapter 40

Morwenna's POVPain didn’t come with screams anymore. It came with silence, with stillness so vast it felt like being trapped in the echo of a star dying. I didn’t know if I was dreaming or dead, but I floated inside a memory that wasn’t mine and yet entirely was.Flashes: a battlefield soaked in gold light, Leofric crumbling under the weight of some unseen force, Sabine's voice shouting spells in a language I didn’t know I knew, and then the girl with my face, that third version of me dragging me deeper into the fracture of time. When I opened my eyes, the world was sideways.Stone beneath me. Cold, wet and alive.I was in the ruins of the inner sanctum. The place where the Old Kings once spoke to the stars. But I wasn't alone.Leofric knelt beside me, covered in blood that wasn’t his. His eyes locked on mine like he didn’t believe they were real. "You're back.""Back from where?"He didn’t answer. Just pressed his forehead to mine, breathing like he was afraid I had vanish if he bli

Morwenna's POV Fire lingered in the sky where the portal had closed, a burn scar across the heavens that refused to heal. I stood at the battlements, still bloodstained, still half-drenched in the raw magic of what I had done. Leofric hadn’t let go of my hand since we returned. Maybe he was afraid I would dissolve again, or maybe I was. Either way, I clung to that warmth like an anchor.Sabine was the first to speak. "It wasn't just one realm that bled tonight. We felt the rift open all the way in the southern covens. The bloodline barriers cracked. Elders are waking up who haven't stirred in a century."I barely blinked. "Then we wake too. We gather them. This war won’t wait."Sabine frowned. "It isn't just about swords and sorcery anymore, Morwenna. This whatever you've become, it's reshaping the ley lines. If it keeps unraveling, we won’t need enemies. We’ll devour ourselves."I turned to face her fully. "Then help me hold it together. Or stand aside."Her jaw tightened, but she n

Morwenna’s POVStarlight pulsed from the gashes across my arms, dripping in slow, shimmering rivulets that hissed when they met the frozen stone. Every breath scraped like broken glass in my lungs, but I was back in my body, alone—if clinging to your own sanity can be called alone. The third me, the mirror me, the prophecy’s puppet—all gone or caged somewhere deep. I could feel their claw marks on the inside of my mind, still hot and weeping. Yet my heartbeat was my own again, and that was enough to stand.Leofric steadied me with a hand on my shoulder. His palm trembled, though he tried to hide it. Around us the courtyard lay in tatters. Sabine’s spell circle sputtered, its runes fading beneath drifting ash. A dozen guards knelt, blades raised against shadows that no longer existed. For one breathless moment it felt like the world had paused, shocked by what had nearly slipped through.I lifted my gaze to the gate. The celestial woman and the girl—my other faces—were gone. No portal,

Morwenna's POV Smoke bled into the sky like veins from a dying god. I stood at the highest balcony, wind biting at my skin, hair wild and damp with frost. Below, Aedric's army sprawled across the hills like a festering wound. Not just rogues anymore feral packs, disgraced nobles, castaways with nothing left to lose. They came for power. They came for me.Leofric stood beside me, blood on his knuckles, his breathing still sharp from combat drills. He hadn’t said a word since he joined me. He didn’t have to. His silence was weight enough."They’re multiplying by the hour," I muttered, watching another line of tents rise in the distance. "Like a plague."He nodded slowly. "They think you’ll splinter before the war begins. That the pressure will break you."“They might be right.”His gaze slid to mine. "But it hasn’t yet."I didn’t respond. What could I say? I had broken. Last night, the mark burned through me like wildfire. I lost control. Collapsed in the war room, magic writhing out o

Morwenna's POV Smoke curled around me like a living thing, rising from the wreckage of the council chamber. I stood at the edge of the broken dais, staring at the blood-soaked stone where the High Seer had fallen. His robes still smoked. No one moved him. No one dared speak.I had spoken the ancient words. The ones etched into my bones. And the curse answered.Behind me, the silence cracked. I heard Leofric’s boots scuff over the shattered marble as he approached. His steps were slower than usual—he was still recovering from the last backlash. From me."You shouldn't have done it," he said, his voice low."They voted to strip me of my title. Sabine too. What other choice did I have?"He didn’t argue. That terrified me more than shouting would’ve.I turned to face him. "They were going to sentence me. For what I might become.""And now they're ashes.""Not all. Just enough."I could feel it now—the power stirring under my skin, restless and aware. The celestial side of me had awakened

  • Sold to the Lycan King   Chapter 35

Leofric’s POVSilence had teeth. It chewed through the war room, ripping at whatever resolve remained in the air. The map of the kingdom lay between us, stained with ash and streaked blood. Morwenna stood at the edge of the table, stillness carved into her bones. Her hair was bound back, tight and ruthless, and her fingers never strayed far from the shard. She hadn't spoken since the vision. Since the crypt. Since the fire.Sabine lingered near the window, her face unreadable. Outside, smoke climbed toward a dawn that refused to rise."He moves before the moon shifts," I said, pointing to the red stones marking Aedric's line. "And he's not alone. The woman beside him—""Is not human," Morwenna cut in. Her voice held no tremor. Only fact.Sabine's gaze snapped toward her. "You saw her?""In the flame. In the mirror. In me."I stepped closer. "Who is she?"Morwenna lifted her chin. "She’s what I become if I fail. If I sever the bond. If I let power lead."A silence heavier than death fe
