Mag-log inIsabella stood before the mirror while Maria adjusted the sleeves of her dark blue dress.
"You look beautiful," the housekeeper said warmly.
Isabella looked at her reflection uncertainly. "I hope his family doesn't think I'm too simple for him."
Maria paused.
"You're marrying Alessandro Moretti, not auditioning to become someone else. Let them meet the woman you are."
Before Isabella could answer, a knock sounded at the door.
Lorenzo entered, dressed in a black suit. "Are you ready? My brother has already threatened to leave without us."
Isabella's eyes widened. "Without his own bride?"
"He's capable of anything when he's hungry."
She laughed, and Lorenzo offered his arm.
"Come on, future Mrs. Moretti."
For the first time, the title didn't sound entirely frightening.
The family dinner was held in a private dining room at the Moretti estate.
Several relatives were already seated when Alessandro entered with Isabella beside him. Conversations quieted, and curious eyes followed the young woman who had captured the attention of Milan's most feared businessman.
Alessandro pulled out a chair for her.
"Sit beside me."
Isabella settled into the seat, smoothing her dress over her knees. She could feel everyone studying her, but she remembered Maria's advice and lifted her chin.
An elegant older woman seated across from them smiled.
"So, you're the young woman Roberto Rossi offered to settle his debt."
The table fell silent.
Isabella's fingers tightened around her napkin.
Before she could respond, Alessandro set down his glass.
"Her name is Isabella. If you wish to speak about her, use it."
The woman raised an eyebrow, surprised by his sharp tone.
"I was merely asking a question."
"And I answered you."
Isabella glanced at him. He had defended her without making a spectacle of it, and she felt a small warmth spread through her chest.
The older woman studied Isabella again.
"Tell me, my dear, do you understand the kind of family you're joining?"
"I'm beginning to," Isabella answered honestly. "I know your family has enemies, and I know marrying Alessandro means my life will change. I don't understand everything yet, but I intend to learn."
"And what if you discover things you dislike?"
Isabella hesitated before answering.
"Then I hope I'll be allowed to ask questions before deciding what I think."
Lorenzo coughed into his glass to hide a laugh.
Alessandro turned his head slightly toward Isabella. There was something in his expression she couldn't quite interpret.
The older woman, however, smiled.
"At least she has a mind of her own."
"She does," Alessandro replied.
He said it so confidently that Isabella looked at him in surprise.
For the rest of dinner, she answered questions politely, listened more than she spoke, and occasionally leaned toward in to ask him about unfamiliar names.
Each time, he explained quietly rather than dismissing her curiosity.
He began noticing little things: the way she thanked the servants, how she listened when others spoke, and how she remained kind even when a relative made an unkind remark.
She wasn't trying to impress anyone.
Somehow, that impressed him more.
After dinner, Alessandro found Isabella standing near the terrace doors.
"Are you ready to leave?" he asked.
"Not yet."
He glanced at her. "Why?"
She looked toward the gardens, where two guards were walking along the perimeter.
"Those men are there because of the threats against me, aren't they?"
"Yes."
"And if someone got past them, what would I do?"
Alessandro's expression became serious.
"You would follow the security instructions you've been given."
"But what if I couldn't reach them? What if someone entered a room before they could help me?"
He studied her face.
"Are you asking me to teach you how to protect yourself?"
"Yes."
He hadn't expected that.
Isabella lowered her eyes briefly, choosing her words carefully.
"I don't want to become hard or cruel, Alessandro. I don't want to live looking for enemies everywhere. But I also don't want to be helpless"
He said nothing.
"I want to learn self-defense. And, if it's appropriate, I want to learn how to handle a gun safely. Not because I want to hurt anyone, but because I need to understand what I'm dealing with."
For a long moment, Alessandro watched her.
He had expected her to ask for more guards, a safer room, or permission to remain inside the mansion. Instead, she was asking to learn.
"Learning to handle a firearm isn't a game," he said. "It requires discipline.
"Very well. I'll arrange self-defense training. If you still want firearms training afterward, we'll discuss it with a qualified instructor."
"Really?"
"Don't look so surprised. You asked a reasonable question."
She smiled, and for one brief moment, Alessandro forgot about the business waiting for him, He simply enjoyed seeing her happy.
The realization unsettled him more than it should have.
Two days later, the wedding took place.
Alessandro had moved the ceremony forward, explaining that the family needed the marriage formalized before a major gathering of business associates. Isabella had little time to prepare, but Maria and the household staff helped her through every detail.
On the morning of the wedding, Isabella stood in front of the mirror wearing an elegant ivory gown.
Her hands trembled.
She was about to marry a man she barely knew, a man who could command a room without raising his voice and whose enemies were already watching her.
But she had made her decision.
She would give herself time to learn, grow, and discover what kind of life she could build.
When the doors opened, Alessandro stood waiting at the end of the aisle in a black suit. His expression remained controlled, but his gaze stayed on her as she approached.
For the first time, he seemed to notice how vulnerable she looked beneath her composure.
When she reached him, he offered his hand.
She placed hers in it.
"You look beautiful," he murmured.
A blush crept into her cheeks. "Thank you."
"I meant it."
She looked up at him, surprised by the sincerity in his voice.
The ceremony was brief. There were no grand declarations of love, no promises neither of them was ready to make. When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, Alessandro slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then he leaned forward and kissed her forehead.
The gesture was unexpectedly gentle.
Isabella's heart fluttered.
When they turned to face the guests, applause filled the room. Alessandro kept one hand at the small of her back, guiding her through the crowd.
He had married for strategy.
But as he watched Isabella smile shyly at the people congratulating her, he found himself wondering what it would take to make that smile appear more often.
That evening, after the guests had departed, Isabella found Alessandro in his study reviewing documents.
She stood at the open doorway.
"May I come in?"
He looked up. "You're my wife. You don't need to ask permission to enter a room."
She stepped inside, smiling faintly.
"I would still like to learn about your business."
His pen stopped moving.
"My business?"
"People are threatening me because of your position. I don't want to remain ignorant about the world I now live in. I want to understand the companies, the people we deal with, and why certain decisions matter."
Alessandro leaned back in his chair.
"You've been my wife for less than a day, and you're already asking for access to my business."
"I'm not asking you to tell me every secret. Start with what you can safely explain."
He studied her, then gestured toward the chair opposite him.
"Tomorrow morning, join me for breakfast in my office. I'll explain the companies you can know about, and you can ask questions."
Her face brightened.
"Thank you."
As she turned to leave, he called her back.
"Isabella?"
"Yes?"
"I hope you know you don't have to become like me to survive beside me."
She smiled softly.
"I don't want to become like you, Alessandro. I just want to become someone who can stand beside you without being afraid of everything."
He watched her leave.
For the first time in years, Alessandro Moretti was looking forward to something that had nothing to do with money, power, or victory.
And that frightened him more than he cared to admit.
Because he was beginning to want his wife beside him—not simply because their marriage served his interests, but because the gentle woman he had married was becoming the one person he wanted to understand him.He was feeling things he shouldn't feel. A feeling he was scared to admit he felt.
Isabella had never imagined that a simple charity visit could turn into such a disaster. She stood in the children's home's small activity hall, holding a clipboard while Elena spoke with the director. The children had gathered around a table, excited about the new educational supplies the foundation had promised to provide.Everything had been going well.Until Bianca arrived.Isabella noticed her near the entrance and immediately stiffened.“What is she doing here?” she whispered.Elena followed her gaze.“Do you know her?”“She's my stepsister.”Elena's expression changed slightly. Before she could say anything, Bianca approached them with a bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.“Isabella! What a surprise.”Isabella forced a polite smile.“Bianca.”“I heard you were doing charity work now. How wonderful.”Her eyes travelled over Isabella's clothes before returning to her face.“I must say, you've adjusted to your new life very quickly.”Elena stepped forward.“Good afternoon. An
Isabella stared at the invitation on her dressing table. It was an elegant cream-coloured envelope bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was the schedule for the foundation's first planning meeting, along with a list of projects Elena wanted her to review. She had read everything twice, yet she still wasn't sure where to begin.A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.“Come in.”Alessandro entered, already dressed for work.“Still studying?”She held up the papers.“Your mother sent me all these documents. I think she expects me to understand everything by Wednesday.”He collected the papers and glanced through them.“She isn't expecting you to become an expert overnight.”“Some of these programmes have been running for years. I don't even know how they are funded.”“Then ask. That's how people learn.”Isabella sighed.“What if I make a mistake?”He placed the documents on the dressing table.“Then you correct it.”She looked at him.“You make it sound so easy.”“Because it is. You'r
Saturday morning arrived with an unexpected phone call.Isabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”She glanced at him through the mirror.“Does your father know we're coming?”“He was the one who invited us.”“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.“Because my mother enjoys having people around. My father enjoys giving orders.”Isabella smiled. She had spent the past few days thinking about her last conversation with Vittorio. Although he hadn't been openly unkind, she couldn't forget the way he had questioned her place in the family. She turned towards Alessandro.“Do you think he likes me?”Alessandro looked at her for a moment.“Why is that so important to you?”“Because he's your father. I don't want there to be problems between you because of me.”He walked closer and placed his hands on
Alessandro left the bedroom early the following morning.Isabella was still asleep when he dressed, adjusted his watch and picked up his phone. He paused beside the bed, looking at her peaceful face.He had promised her that he would be honest, but he wasn't entirely sure what his father wanted to discuss. Whatever it was, he didn't want it disturbing her morning. He bent down and kissed her forehead before leaving.Don Vittorio was already seated behind his large mahogany desk when Alessandro entered the family estate.“You're late.”Alessandro glanced at his watch.“I'm three minutes early.”“Then perhaps I've become impatient in my old age.”Alessandro pulled out a chair and sat down.“What is this about?”His father pushed a folder across the desk.“Your wife.”Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.“What about her?”Vittorio opened the folder.“I've been receiving questions about her.”“From whom?”“Some of our business associates. They want to know why you have suddenly beco
Isabella was sitting by the bedroom window when Alessandro walked in, his phone pressed against his ear.“No, Father. I haven't forgotten.”He listened for a moment, his expression becoming increasingly serious.“Sunday. We'll be there.”He ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.Isabella looked up from the book in her hands.“Is everything all right?”“My father wants us at the family estate on Sunday.”She sat straighter.“Your father?”“Yes.”“Is something wrong?”“No. At least, not that he has told me.”She hesitated before asking, “Is it another family gathering?”Alessandro chuckled.“Something like that. My father enjoys having everyone under one roof. He calls it family tradition. I call it an unnecessary interruption to my weekend.”Isabella smiled.“Then why do you always go?”“Because refusing him usually creates more trouble than attending.”She laughed softly. He approached her and sat beside her.“Are you worried?”“A little.”“Why?”She closed her book.“I
By the time they arrived at the mansion, Isabella was still thinking about the mall. She had received expensive gifts before, but never anything like this. Alessandro had bought an entire shopping mall and placed it in her name as though he were buying her a bouquet of flowers. She glanced at him as they walked into the house.“Alessandro?”He loosened his tie. “Yes?”“Can I ask you something?”“You never need permission to ask me anything.”She hesitated. “Why do you do these things?”He stopped walking.“What things?”“Buying me an entire mall. Giving me expensive things. Making people apologize to me.” She lowered her eyes. “You don't have to do all that.”He studied her for a moment.“Do you think I do it because I feel obligated?”“I don't know.”He stepped closer, gently lifting her chin.“Your father made you feel as though you were something he could exchange for money. I won't have you believing that your worth depends on what someone is willing to pay for you.”Isabella's th
