LOGINIsabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.
“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”
She glanced at him through the mirror.
“Does your father know we're coming?”
“He was the one who invited us.”
“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”
Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.
“Because my mother enjoys having people around. My father enjoys giving orders.”
Isabella smiled.
She had spent the past few days thinking about her last conversation with Vittorio. Although he hadn't been openly unkind, she couldn't forget the way he had questioned her place in the family.
She turned towards Alessandro.
“Do you think he likes me?”
Alessandro looked at her for a moment.
“Why is that so important to you?”
“Because he's your father. I don't want there to be problems between you because of me.”
He walked closer and placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Listen to me, Isabella. My relationship with my father is my responsibility. You don't have to make yourself smaller to keep him happy.”
She nodded.
“Now, are you ready?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Let's go.”
Elena welcomed them at the entrance with a kiss on Isabella's cheeks.
“My dear! I've been waiting for you.”
“Good morning, Elena.”
“Come inside. Your father-in-law is in his study, pretending he isn't waiting for you.”
Alessandro shook his head.
“Mother.”
“What? It's the truth.”
Lorenzo appeared from the hallway, carrying a glass of juice.
“Brother, you're late.”
Alessandro checked his watch.
“I'm exactly on time.”
“That's what late people always say.”
Valentina came downstairs, laughing.
“Leave him alone, Lorenzo. He's probably still adjusting to having someone else decide what time he leaves the house.”
Alessandro gave her a warning look.
“Must everyone in this house have an opinion about my marriage?”
“Of course,” Valentina replied. “It's the most interesting thing that's happened here in years.”
Isabella laughed, and Alessandro shook his head.
“I'm beginning to regret bringing you here.”
“Too late,” Lorenzo said. “She's one of us now.”
The words made Isabella smile.
One of us.
She wasn't used to hearing that.
After a few minutes, Vittorio summoned Alessandro and Isabella to his study.
Elena offered to accompany them, but Vittorio insisted that he wanted to speak with them privately.
Isabella sat beside her husband while Vittorio remained behind his desk.
“I hope you had a pleasant journey.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you.”
He nodded before turning to Alessandro.
“Your mother tells me she has invited Isabella to participate in the foundation's annual dinner.”
“Yes,” Alessandro answered.
Vittorio looked at his daughter-in-law.
“Are you comfortable with that responsibility?”
Isabella nodded cautiously.
“I think so. Although I may need some guidance.”
“That's understandable.”
He opened a drawer and removed a folder.
“The Moretti Foundation supports several children's homes, educational programmes and families who need assistance. Your mother-in-law has overseen much of the work for years.”
Isabella listened carefully.
“I'd like to learn more about it.”
“Good. I would like you to work alongside Elena. Eventually, you may take responsibility for some of the foundation's projects.”
She looked surprised.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“But I'm still learning.”
“Everyone starts somewhere.”
Alessandro glanced at his father.
“You're offering her a position?”
“I'm offering her an opportunity to understand another part of this family.”
Vittorio turned back to Isabella.
“Being a Moretti isn't only about attending dinners and wearing expensive clothes. There are responsibilities attached to the name. People will look to you, and you must understand that.”
Isabella swallowed.
“I understand.”
“Do you? You will meet people who are less fortunate than you. Some will come with genuine needs, others with stories designed to take advantage of your kindness. You must learn to distinguish between the two.”
Isabella nodded.
“I'll do my best.”
Vittorio closed the folder.
“That's all I ask.”
When they left the study, Alessandro was unusually quiet.
Isabella glanced at him.
“Are you upset?”
“No. Why would I be?”
“I thought you might not like your father giving me responsibilities.”
He stopped walking.
“Is that what you think?”
She shrugged.
“I wasn't sure.”
He took her hand.
“I want you to have something of your own, Isabella. If you enjoy working with the foundation, I'll support you. If you don't, you can walk away. Nobody will force you.”
She smiled.
“Thank you.”
He kissed her forehead.
“Besides, I think you'll do well.”
Before she could respond, Lorenzo appeared at the end of the hallway.
“Are you two planning to spend the entire afternoon whispering to each other?”
Alessandro sighed.
“What do you want?”
“Mother wants everyone in the garden. She's arranged lunch outside.”
The family gathered around a long table beneath the trees.
Elena sat beside Isabella, asking about the books she had been reading and her plans to continue learning about the family businesses.
Valentina joined in, suggesting that they attend the foundation's upcoming event together.
“You'll need someone to help you survive all those boring speeches,” she said.
Isabella laughed.
“I hope they aren't too boring.”
“They are. Especially when Father starts talking about responsibility and tradition.”
Across the table, Vittorio looked up.
“I heard that.”
Valentina smiled innocently.
“I wasn't talking about you, Father.”
Lorenzo nearly choked on his drink.
Even Alessandro laughed.
For a moment, Isabella simply watched them.
They teased one another, disagreed and laughed without fear of being punished for speaking. It was so different from the house where she had grown up.
She had spent years learning to stay quiet because the wrong words could make Claudia angry or Bianca cruel.
Here, people could disagree and still belong.
Elena noticed her thoughtful expression.
“Are you all right, dear?”
Isabella smiled.
“Yes. I'm just enjoying this.”
Elena reached across and gently squeezed her hand.
“Then you must come more often.”
“I'd like that.”
After lunch, Alessandro was called away to take a business call.
Isabella remained in the garden with Elena and Valentina.
“There's something I wanted to ask you,” Valentina said.
Isabella turned towards her.
“What is it?”
“How are you finding married life with my brother?”
Isabella's cheeks warmed.
“It's been good.”
Valentina raised an eyebrow.
“Good?”
Elena laughed.
“Valentina, leave the poor girl alone.”
“What? I'm curious.”
Isabella smiled shyly.
“Alessandro has been kind to me. I'm still getting used to everything, but we're learning.”
Valentina studied her for a moment.
“You know, I've never seen him like this.”
“Like what?”
“Patient. He used to lose his temper when people asked him the same question twice. Now he explains things to you as though he has all the time in the world.”
Isabella looked down, smiling.
Elena nodded.
“Your presence has changed him, dear. But don't forget to let him change you too. Not into someone else, but into someone who understands her own worth.”
Isabella's smile softened.
“I'll remember that.”
It was almost evening when Alessandro finally returned to the garden.
He found Isabella sitting beside his mother, laughing at something Valentina had said.
“Are you ready to go, sweetheart?”
She stood.
“Yes.”
Elena hugged her before they left.
“Remember, the foundation meeting is on Wednesday. I'll send you the details.”
“I'll be there.”
Vittorio approached them near the entrance.
“Isabella.”
She turned.
“Yes, sir?”
“I hope you understand that the invitation to work with the foundation is not merely a formality.”
“I do.”
“I expect you to take it seriously.”
“I will.”
He nodded.
Then, after a brief pause, he added, “And you are welcome here whenever you wish to come.”
Isabella's eyes widened slightly.
“Thank you.”
Vittorio turned to his son.
“Take care of your wife.”
Alessandro gave a small nod.
“Always.”
During the drive home, Isabella rested her head against the seat, smiling.
Alessandro glanced at her.
“You enjoyed yourself.”
“I did.”
“Even with my father's interrogation?”
She laughed.
“He wasn't interrogating me.”
“He has a way of making ordinary conversations feel like business negotiations.”
“Perhaps that's just how he is.”
Alessandro reached across the console and took her hand.
“I'm glad you came.”
“So am I.”
She hesitated before adding, “I think your family is beginning to feel like my family too.”
His fingers tightened gently around hers.
“Good.”
She looked at him.
“Do you think your father meant what he said about welcoming me?”
“I know he did.”
For once, Alessandro didn't sound uncertain about his father's intentions.
But he had no idea how much his father's growing acceptance of Isabella would soon matter when the Moretti family's interests began to clash with his own decisions.
And this time, Alessandro wouldn't be able to protect his wife simply by keeping her away from the family's affairs.
Bianca paced across her bedroom, her phone pressed tightly against her ear.“Did you see what they posted?” she demanded. “They made Isabella look like some innocent victim, and now everyone is praising her.”Roberto sighed on the other end. “What exactly did you expect?”“I expected them to be embarrassed by her! Instead, Alessandro's mother stood beside her, his father defended her, and the whole family acted as though she had done nothing wrong.”“Then perhaps you should have thought before posting those pictures.”Bianca stopped pacing.“Are you blaming me?”“I'm telling you that you have made enough noise. The Morettis are not the kind of family you can provoke without consequences.”Bianca scoffed. “You sound frightened of them.”“I have reasons to be.”For a moment, neither spoke.Roberto sat behind his desk, staring at the documents scattered before him. His financial problems had not disappeared simply because Isabella had married a wealthy man. If anything, they had become w
Isabella had never imagined that a simple charity visit could turn into such a disaster. She stood in the children's home's small activity hall, holding a clipboard while Elena spoke with the director. The children had gathered around a table, excited about the new educational supplies the foundation had promised to provide.Everything had been going well.Until Bianca arrived.Isabella noticed her near the entrance and immediately stiffened.“What is she doing here?” she whispered.Elena followed her gaze.“Do you know her?”“She's my stepsister.”Elena's expression changed slightly. Before she could say anything, Bianca approached them with a bright smile that didn't reach her eyes.“Isabella! What a surprise.”Isabella forced a polite smile.“Bianca.”“I heard you were doing charity work now. How wonderful.”Her eyes travelled over Isabella's clothes before returning to her face.“I must say, you've adjusted to your new life very quickly.”Elena stepped forward.“Good afternoon. An
Isabella stared at the invitation on her dressing table. It was an elegant cream-coloured envelope bearing the Moretti family crest. Inside was the schedule for the foundation's first planning meeting, along with a list of projects Elena wanted her to review. She had read everything twice, yet she still wasn't sure where to begin.A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.“Come in.”Alessandro entered, already dressed for work.“Still studying?”She held up the papers.“Your mother sent me all these documents. I think she expects me to understand everything by Wednesday.”He collected the papers and glanced through them.“She isn't expecting you to become an expert overnight.”“Some of these programmes have been running for years. I don't even know how they are funded.”“Then ask. That's how people learn.”Isabella sighed.“What if I make a mistake?”He placed the documents on the dressing table.“Then you correct it.”She looked at him.“You make it sound so easy.”“Because it is. You'r
Saturday morning arrived with an unexpected phone call.Isabella was in front of the mirror, trying to decide which earrings to wear, when Alessandro's voice came from behind her.“Mother says we should arrive before noon.”She glanced at him through the mirror.“Does your father know we're coming?”“He was the one who invited us.”“Then why does your mother sound more excited than he does?”Alessandro chuckled as he adjusted his cufflinks.“Because my mother enjoys having people around. Alessandro left the bedroom early the following morning.Isabella was still asleep when he dressed, adjusted his watch and picked up his phone. He paused beside the bed, looking at her peaceful face.He had promised her that he would be honest, but he wasn't entirely sure what his father wanted to discuss. Whatever it was, he didn't want it disturbing her morning. He bent down and kissed her forehead before leaving.Don Vittorio was already seated behind his large mahogany desk when Alessandro entered the family estate.“You're late.”Alessandro glanced at his watch.“I'm three minutes early.”“Then perhaps I've become impatient in my old age.”Alessandro pulled out a chair and sat down.“What is this about?”His father pushed a folder across the desk.“Your wife.”Alessandro's expression hardened slightly.“What about her?”Vittorio opened the folder.“I've been receiving questions about her.”“From whom?”“Some of our business associates. They want to know why you have suddenly beco
Isabella was sitting by the bedroom window when Alessandro walked in, his phone pressed against his ear.“No, Father. I haven't forgotten.”He listened for a moment, his expression becoming increasingly serious.“Sunday. We'll be there.”He ended the call and slipped his phone into his pocket.Isabella looked up from the book in her hands.“Is everything all right?”“My father wants us at the family estate on Sunday.”She sat straighter.“Your father?”“Yes.”“Is something wrong?”“No. At least, not that he has told me.”She hesitated before asking, “Is it another family gathering?”Alessandro chuckled.“Something like that. My father enjoys having everyone under one roof. He calls it family tradition. I call it an unnecessary interruption to my weekend.”Isabella smiled.“Then why do you always go?”“Because refusing him usually creates more trouble than attending.”She laughed softly. He approached her and sat beside her.“Are you worried?”“A little.”“Why?”She closed her book.“I
