Chapter 3

작가: Andy
I snatched those bills right out of her hand and held them up to the sunlight to check they were real.

"A hundred bucks, right?"

I briskly stuffed the money into my pocket.

"Errand fee, twenty. Heat-hazard pay, twenty. Personal-shopper surcharge, twenty."

"The coffee's fifteen. Here's your twenty-five in change."

I pulled out my phone. "Venmo or cash?"

Bianca's eyes went huge, like she was seeing a ghost.

"Cassandra, are you insane?! Since when did you get this cheap and grubby?!"

"I work for a living, and I'm proud of it."

As I said it, I turned to Julian.

"Boss, I'm requesting ten minutes off to run this errand. It counts as my legal break, so you won't dock my pay, right?"

Julian looked at me, his sunglasses slipping down to the bridge of his nose. He lifted his coffee to hide the corners of his mouth, which were climbing wildly.

"...Go."

Ten minutes later, I came back with an iced black-currant refresher.

"Your drink, Miss. Enjoy." I set the cup down in front of Bianca.

Bianca scoffed, picked up the cup, and took one sip.

"Pfft!"

She spat it right back out.

"What is this?! It's room temperature! I asked for ice!"

"Sorry, the sun was brutal on the way back. The ice melted." Not a flicker on my face.

"You did that on purpose!"

Bianca shot to her feet, grabbed the cup, and made to fling it in my face.

I whipped out the little plastic payment-alert speaker I carry everywhere and held it up like a shield in front of my face.

"Splash!"

The purple-red liquid drenched the speaker and my T-shirt.

Bianca smiled smugly.

"Oops, my hand slipped. You okay, Cassandra?"

Julian's expression darkened in a flash, a chill surging into his eyes. He had already started to rise, one long leg stepping forward.

But I beat him to it, grabbing the towel off my neck to wipe my face, then opening the calculator on my phone.

"Beep, beep!"

"Designer hand-stitched T-shirt, ruined. Fifteen hundred."

"Severe emotional trauma. Six thousand."

"Advance on medical costs for premeditated assault. One thousand."

"Grand total: eight thousand five hundred dollars even."

I shoved the payment QR code right up under Bianca's nose.

"So, Miss Ross, are you scanning this yourself, or should I call the cops right now and report you for disorderly conduct in public?"

Bianca was completely dumbstruck.

"Fifteen hundred for that ratty shirt? You're extorting me!"

"What, Miss Ross thinks the great Ashford heiress would wear flea-market junk that costs less than fifteen hundred?"

I shot back, standing my ground.

Seeing that I had the situation handled, Julian settled comfortably back into his seat.

Watching me back Bianca into a corner, his shoulders started shaking hard.

This dude is way too happy!

Bianca was so furious her face contorted with rage. She pointed at me, unable to get a word out for the longest time.

"You... you're just shameless!"

"Thanks for the compliment. Payment plans accepted, interest billed separately." I smiled and waggled my phone.

"Or, you know, I wouldn't mind stringing up a banner right now that reads: 'Bianca Ross Bullies Classmate, Refuses to Pay Debts.'"

Bianca stamped her foot hard.

"Fine, I'll scan it! You just wait!"

The Venmo alert chimed: eighty-five hundred dollars received.

And I felt it deep in my bones: this body-double gig was a gold mine I could dig forever!

After those eighty-five hundred bucks hit my account, I walked on air.

That evening, Julian had a so-called "young high-society mixer."

As his personal assistant, I naturally got dragged along.

The venue was an obscenely luxurious private club on the south side of town.

The moment the private-room door swung open, the air inside was thick with smoke, men and women lounging around in a ring.

"Well, well, Julian's here."

A rich kid with blond hair stood up, his eyes landing on me.

"If it isn't the Ashford heiress. Heard you're Julian's assistant now?"

"What, slumming it for the experience?"

There was clear malice in his words, and the people around him snickered along.

Julian sat down in the master seat on the sofa, legs crossed, saying nothing, like he wanted to see how I'd handle it.

I scoffed inwardly but plastered a perfect, professional smile on my face.

"Evening, gentlemen. Since you all know I'm the assistant, feel free to put me to work. Pouring drinks, fetching tea, whatever you need tonight."

"Everything's clearly priced, of course. Honest rates, no tricks."

The blond guy blinked, apparently not expecting me to be so cooperative.

His eyes rolled, and he picked up a bottle of Louis XIII from the table, filling a glass to the brim.

"Alright then. Since you're so hard up for cash."

He pushed the glass in front of me, then pulled a wad of bills from his wallet and slapped it on the table.

"Down this, and the three grand's yours."

Julian, who'd been watching from the sidelines this whole time, narrowed his eyes, a cold aura rolling off him..

Marcus and his pack of freeloading buddies scrambled off, tripping over themselves. The street settled back into calm.I looked at Julian and suddenly thought that what this man had just done was so damn cool."What are you staring at?" He turned his head, glancing at the grease on his hands with distaste."Julian, do you like me?" I asked, straight to the point.I'm the kind of person who'd die if I couldn't just come right out and say it.Julian's body stiffened, and the tips of his ears turned suspiciously red."Don't flatter yourself! I just figure you've still got a debt to pay off, so you can't go getting bullied by other people.""Oh. I see." I nodded thoughtfully."I did the math. Business has been good lately, so I can pay you back the three hundred grand now."I looked at him with a smile."And since I don't owe you anymore, you don't have to come work here in the future."Julian panicked."No way! Who says you don't owe me anymore?!"He was grasping at straws."Back at the c

"Good vibes are good for business, Mr. Sinclair." I peeled a tangerine with a smile and popped a segment into his mouth, cutting off his complaints."The customer is king, and you're just the king's little errand boy."For a solid week straight, Julian showed up at my cart to "serve his sentence" without fail, day in and day out.He went from charring the steak black at the start to expertly seasoning, flipping, and stacking a perfect sandwich later on. He could even fold the wax-paper wrappers into crisp, neat corners.I had to admit, the elite really are built different. Even at grilling cheesesteaks, he was number one. This particular evening, at closing time.I was counting my money, and Julian sat on the little folding stool beside me, rubbing his sore shoulders."Tired, huh? Want me to do you a huge favor and give them a rub?" I was in a great mood.Julian shot me a glance."How much per rub?""Friends-and-family rate. Two hundred and fifty."We were right in the middle of bicker

He was out of breath, his white shirt spattered with little specks of grease."Run! Go on, keep pushing that busted cart and run!"He gritted his teeth, closing in on me step by step.I clutched my cash box tight."Julian, I'm telling you: no money here, just my life, take it or leave it!""I'm not your assistant anymore. Take one more step and I'm calling the cops!"Julian stopped in his tracks, then suddenly scoffed."Money?"He pulled a black card out of his pocket and slapped it straight down on the cheesesteak flat-top."This cart. I'm buying it."I froze.Buying the cart?"Did you hit your head or something?" I stared at the black card. "There's enough on that card to buy this whole street. And you want my rickety mobile cart?""Money's no object to me." Julian crossed his arms and looked at me."Since you won't come back and be my assistant, then I'll just buy your business.""Now I'm your boss. Starting tomorrow, you'll grill me a hundred cheesesteaks a day."I looked at him li

"Get out."Julian didn't even lift his head.Cassandra froze."Julian, what's wrong with you? I'm the real Cassandra! That Vivian is just a money-grubbing little knockoff!"Julian finally raised his head, his eyes looking at her like she was a corpse."A fragile, stupid woman like you, constantly letting men scam you out of a million and a half at the drop of a hat, is completely repulsive. Just looking at you turns my stomach."Cassandra's face went white in an instant, tears spinning in her eyes."You... how can you talk to me like that!""Security!"Julian pressed the intercom on his desk."Please show Miss Ashford out. From now on, she is not to set foot in Sinclair territory without my permission."Two burly security guards charged in at once and dragged Cassandra out, half-escorting, half-hauling.Julian slumped into his executive chair and yanked his tie loose in irritation. His head was full of nothing but that woman holding up her money, grinning ear to ear."Heartless little

I snapped to it immediately. Now was the perfect moment to cash out!I quickly pulled out the ledger and little calculator I carry around with me."Fine. Since you want to switch back, let's settle the accounts clearly."I aggressively tapped the calculator keys."These past few months, I went to class in your place, answered roll call, kept your attendance record spotless.""That's an academic-maintenance fee. Fifteen grand.""I dealt with your difficult relatives and marriage prospects in your place, got yelled at and pushed around. That's emotional damages. Thirty grand.""I also got worked like a pack mule by this guy, up at dawn and out till dark every day. That's a heavy-labor depreciation fee. Sixty grand.""Add the back pay from covering your classes, plus hush money, plus incidentals, and it all comes to four hundred fifty grand."I shoved the bill right up in Cassandra's face."Pay now, and we hand off immediately."Cassandra was stunned speechless, forgetting to even cry."Y

At the Sinclair family dinner that night, I absolutely killed it.Old Mrs. Sinclair took my hand and asked, "Cassandra, dear, what is it you love about our Julian?"Thinking of that thirty grand, I put on a performance of absolute professionalism.I reached over and clasped Julian's hand in both of mine, gazing at him with the deepest affection."Grandma, I love Julian like a fat kid loves cake and a bear loves honey!""Even if he ends up flat broke, flipping burgers at some run-down diner!""I'll still pack him a brown-bag lunch every single day and make sure he never, ever goes hungry!"Julian's body went rigid. Then he turned the tables, wrapping my hand up firmly inside his scorching-hot palm. In the light, I clearly saw the tips of his ears quietly flush a faint red.The relatives all around were moved to red-rimmed eyes by this "sincere" declaration of mine."Good, good girl." Old Mrs. Sinclair dabbed at her tears, touched."With you, I can finally stop worrying about Julian."Af
