Chapter 1

On the night of the Moon Goddess Festival, the collar malfunctioned. I collapsed at home in agony, full of silver poison. My mother just called me a useless Alpha heir who couldn't control her emotions.

Just a moment ago, I was a heap of pain on the living room rug.

The searing burn of high-concentration silver poison was tearing from my neck into my chest.

The emotion-suppressing collar on my neck flashed a frantic, blood-red.

The doorknob turned. A flicker of hope ignited in my chest.

"Mom!" I struggled to lift my head, my vision blurred by sweat. "You came back... Help me..."

My mother was an Alpha. One of the world’s leading werewolf geneticists.

She had to have sensed something was wrong. She was here to save me.

But she just stood in the doorway, her Alpha presence an icy wave of pressure.

Her gaze locked onto the flashing red light on my neck, her features twisting in familiar disgust.

"Red again. Losing control again?"

"No!" I tried to sit up, but the silver poisoning sent another spasm through me, and I collapsed. "I... I accidentally touched some silver that fell on the floor... My wolf is burning..."

"Enough!" Elara strode toward me, grabbing my chin and forcing me to meet her eyes. "Eighteen years, and you're still using these excuses? Look at your collar. The data doesn't lie. Your weakness is an insult to my authority."

My vision was blurry, but I could still see the disappointment and rage in her eyes.

It was the look I knew best.

"Elara, we have to go."

My father, Marcus, called from the door. His voice was rushed. "The Festival has already started. The other Alphas and the Alliance Chairman are waiting..."

His eyes fell on me for a second, his brow furrowed.

"Shouldn't we... leave something for Selena to eat?"

"Feed her what?" Elara sneered, dropping my chin. "She already stuffed her face with the festival truffles last week. The ones that cost a thousand an ounce. If she’s that greedy, let her starve and think about what she’s done."

I wanted to say Cassia ate them, but all that came out was a weak whimper.

The collar flashed again, unleashing another sharp sting of silver.

"Lock the door," Elara ordered my father, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Don't let her out until the collar turns blue. She needs to learn control."

"Mom, please..." I reached out a trembling hand, trying to grab the hem of her dress.

She sidestepped my touch with disgust.

Just before the door closed, I saw my sister, Cassia, standing in the hall.

The collar around her neck glowed with a steady, gentle blue, like a halo.

She looked at me and mouthed a single word.

Pathetic.

The door slammed shut. The electronic lock clicked.

The house fell silent.

It was just me and the silver fire burning inside me.

It hurt so much.

Mom is right. The data doesn't lie.

The collar is red. It must be a lie. I'm faking it.

It doesn't really hurt. I'm in control.

Tears streamed down my face as I tried to brainwash myself.

I don't know how long it took, but it felt like the pain really did start to fade.

With my last ounce of strength, I crawled to my desk.

I had to write a report. It was the rule.

A thousand-word "reflection report" for my "emotional outburst" on my tablet every time the light turned red.

If I wrote it, Mom would forgive me, right? She’d give me medicine, right?

With a shaking hand, I turned on the cold tablet.

It was filled with all my old reports.

I always wrote the same thing: "I'm sorry, I was wrong, I'll control my emotions better."

But this time, I wanted to write the truth.

A repressed growl rumbled in my chest.

My vision was fading. Tears fell as I typed with my last bit of strength:

"Mom, I really do love you."

"It hurts so much. Why won't you believe me?"

"The collar is broken. I was never out of control. I'm a worthy Alpha heir."

"I just wanted a hug. Just for you to tell me it would all be okay."

" For eighteen years, I never hated you. Not even when the collar tortured me with silver poison every single day."

"If loving you means losing control, then I'm guilty as charged."

As I typed the last word, the pain vanished.

In its place was a lightness I'd never felt before.

My body felt weightless, like it was about to float away.

I looked down and saw myself, slumped over the desk, completely still.

The collar on my neck was still flashing its lonely red light, like a bloodshot eye in the dark room.

So, this is what it was to be dead. And I still hadn't learned to control my emotions. Sorry, Mom.

I floated near the ceiling of the sanatorium, looking down on how it all ended. My father, living a life on the run with my broken sister. My sister, her wolf spirit damaged, never able to fully shift again, forced to survive as a cripple in the werewolf world. My mother, torturing herself day after day in her ward, just waiting to die.But strangely, I felt no hatred. Only a deep, profound exhaustion.Beside me, a small, pure white wolf appeared. It had my eyes, gentle and innocent. This was my wolf spirit, the true self I was never allowed to show. For eighteen years, the collar had suppressed it, tortured it, made it cry. Now, it was finally free."It's time to go," the little white wolf said in a voice only I could hear.I nodded."But before we go, I want to see her one last time."I floated toward my mother's ward. She was still tied to the bed, the tranquilizers not yet worn off.But she seemed to sense something. In a state between sleep and waking, she opened her eyes and look

Six months later, medical officers from the pack's sanatorium came and took my mother away. The reason: severe self-harm tendencies and psychosis. When they found her, she'd been unconscious in her apartment for three days. The collar had been working nonstop. The silver poisoning almost killed her."Patient refuses all treatment," the head nurse said, shaking her head over the chart. "She insists on wearing that damned collar. She tries to shift and attack anyone who gets near it."My mother was placed in an isolation ward in the deepest part of the sanatorium. She became the strangest patient there.Since they couldn't remove the real collar, the staff had no choice but to leave it on.But worse, she started making her own backup "collars."She would wrap red plastic strips around her neck, over and over."Now there are two," she'd mutter to her reflection. "One for Selena, and one for me."The doctors tried to communicate with her."Ma'am, do you remember who you are?"She would imm

Enforcer Blake took my tablet out of the evidence bag."Now, let's see what the deceased really went through."He cleared his throat and began to read from my notes.Every entry, every word, was like a dagger aimed at everyone in the room."Mom gave me a tonic with wolfsbane in it today. I had an allergic reaction, my heart was racing, and the collar turned red. Mom said I was being defiant and forced me to drink the whole bottle. I threw up blood, but the collar stayed red."My father's face went pale."Cassia broke Dad's moonstone necklace and blamed me. When I tried to explain, my heart pounded. The collar flashed red. Mom called me a liar and gave me a double dose. The pain was so bad I couldn't form words. Mom just said, 'You can't even feel something so small. Stop faking it.'"Marcus's hands began to shake."On New Year's Day, I just wanted a hug. I said, 'I love you, Mom,' and the collar turned red. Mom said love was a weakness, and then...""I had a fever. The collar exploded with light.A blinding, searing red.Brighter and more piercing than it had ever been for me."What?" My mother stared down at the collar on her neck. "How is that possible?"The Enforcers were stunned."I... I was telling the truth," she stammered, frantically patting the collar. "I am Elara. I am Selena's mother..."The red light didn't fade. It pulsed, more violently now."No... it must be broken..." my mother's voice trembled as she tried to reason. "I... I love my family! Everything I did was for the glory of our family!"The red light flared even brighter. It was mocking her every word. Then, I heard the familiar mechanical hiss.Hsssst—The silver injector activated.A scream ripped from my mother's throat."AHHH—!"Her body convulsed violently, her hands clawing at her neck. For the first time, silver poison flooded her veins. For the first time, it burned her wolf spirit. For the first time, she felt the pain I had endured every day for eighteen years."It

Agony had twisted my face into an inhuman mask.Dried black blood caked the corners of my mouth. It was a gruesome stain, proof of the silver poison my body had fought to expel. My eyes were clouded, pupils fixed and dilated, staring at a ceiling they couldn't see.But my neck... my neck was a nightmare. The emotion-suppressing collar was dark. Its light was dead. The skin around it was charred black, eaten away by countless injections of silver.Metal and flesh had melted together. The machine and my skin were one.My mother looked at that face and a bloodcurdling scream tore from her throat."AHHH!"She staggered backward, crashing into a bookshelf. Books rained down around her."No... impossible... This can't be real..."Her voice trembled, her eyes wild with terror."It's a hallucination! A trick! Selena is trying to scare me!"My body fell. The tablet trapped beneath me slid across the floor, stopping at my mother's feet. The screen lit up from the impact. The notes app was open,
