Chapter 2

Du Sud
Scotty said they had to follow the rules. He said everyone had to be treated equally, whether they were 80 years old or three years old.

Then what about Maelyn's grandfather? And what about her parents and her relatives? Why were they any different?

Were they the exception to his rules, or were they simply the people who deserved special treatment in Scotty's world?

I stared intently at that tent. A venomous fire lodged itself in my throat, burning fiercely all the way down until it seemed like every single organ inside me ached.

More than a decade of devotion—more than a decade of what I believed had been supporting each other through thick and thin—was all shattered to pieces in this single moment by the tender, warm scene in front of me.

He had settled her family so comfortably, yet he allowed my father to stand hunched over among broken concrete and twisted debris, holding my bleeding sister, humbly waiting for a kindness that would never come.

He wouldn't even spare them a single glance.

I spun around and practically sprinted back to the corner where Dad and Poppy were. I ran so fast that I almost tripped over a piece of rebar sticking out of the ground.

Dad, seeing the look on my face, scrambled to his feet in a panic.

"What's wrong, Kenzie? Did they refuse to give you water? It's okay, it's okay. I found some water, and Poppy just had some…"

He held out an old enamel mug containing half a cup of murky, yellowish water.

At that moment, every ounce of composure and sanity I'd been desperately holding onto came crumbling down.

Dad had no idea what was going on, though. He hurried after me, grabbed my arm, and reached into the faded inside pocket of his jacket to pull out a crumpled plastic bag.

Inside was half a piece of flatbread. The edges had already gone hard and cracked, and it was obvious it had been made before the earthquake struck. Dad had been keeping it close to his chest, where his body heat had kept it warm.

Lowering his voice, he cast a cautious, eager-to-please glance toward the main tent.

"Kenzie, take this to Scotty. I bet he's so busy that he doesn't even have time to eat. It's a little dry, but it'll fill him up."

Dad stuffed the plastic bag into my hand. His rough, calloused fingertips brushed against the back of my hand like sandpaper.

"Just tell him it's from home. No one will see it, so it won't break the rules."

He flashed me a smile. The wrinkles at the corners of his eyes deepened, and his clouded eyes filled with utmost earnestness.

I looked down at the half piece of bread, at Dad's dust-covered jacket with its frayed cuffs, and finally at Poppy lying on the ground, blood still seeping from the injury on her forehead.

The lump in my throat surged upward again, but I forced myself to swallow it back down.

"Dad, wait here."

Clutching the plastic bag tightly, I turned and, with heavy footsteps, walked toward the tent glowing with warm yellow light.

The tent flap was still half-open.

Standing outside, I could hear the clinking of utensils and the low hum of laughter and chatter.

Maelyn's syrupy-sweet voice drifted out. "Try this, Scotty. My mom saved some of this braised beef just for you."

Answering her was a familiar, deep voice, carrying a relaxed, cheerful tone I had never heard before.

"Mm, it's delicious. Your mom's an amazing cook."

I stood frozen in place. My fingers slowly tightened around the plastic bag, making it crinkle loudly.

Through the gap in the tent flap, I saw Scotty sitting at a folding table. He'd taken off his dust-covered camouflage jacket, leaving only a clean, dark T-shirt.

Maelyn sat next to him, scooping food onto his plate. Around the table were her grandfather, her parents, her aunt, and the little child Tina was entertaining.

Several insulated food containers filled with meat and vegetables were spread across the table, steam still rising from them. The thermos cup was placed right beside Maelyn's grandfather, with its lid removed, releasing a hint of sweet aroma into the air.

Scotty took a large bite with his fork. His cheeks bulged slightly, and the warm yellow light softened the lines of his face.

A gust of cold night air swept past me, making me shiver.

I looked down at myself. Dust covered every inch of me, mud was caked under my fingernails, and my tangled hair clung to my sweaty forehead.

Then I looked at the plastic bag in my hand and at the dry, cracked piece of flatbread.

There Scotty was, eating a hot meal with his college crush and her family. Meanwhile, my father was crouched in a dark corner, while my little sister lay on the cold ground with a bleeding head, unable to get even a drop of clean water.

A sharp, dense ache stabbed at my heart, as though a thousand tiny needles had pierced it at once.

I yanked the tent flap open and strode inside.

The entire tent fell silent instantly.

By the time he was finally able to walk on crutches, his superiors' investigation team had arrived as well.Someone had reported him for abusing his authority during the earthquake rescue—providing unauthorized shelter to those who weren't disaster victims and using public medical resources to benefit personal acquaintances. The evidence was overwhelming. The hot water, hot meals, the dedicated doctor, and the priority placement of Maelyn's family in the tent—every bit of it had been forcibly arranged by Scotty using his authority and personal connections. The day the investigation concluded, Scotty sat alone in his hospital room, staring at the notice he'd received on his phone. He'd been demoted, issued a major disciplinary sanction, and removed from active duty.He stared at the words for a long ti

Once the painkillers wore off, the agony left Scotty drenched in cold sweat. He gripped the bedsheets so tightly that his knuckles turned white.Over and over, his mind replayed that split second—how he'd thrown himself at Maelyn, and how she'd shoved him into danger instead. He'd traded one of his legs for her life. Yet, she'd just turned around, taken her entire family, and left without leaving so much as an apology behind.…In the middle of the night, as the tent grew quiet, Scotty lay there alone. His amputated leg began to throb so badly that he didn't even dare to roll over. Sweat soaked his pillowcase until it clung to his face.He reached for his phone on the bedside table. The screen lit up, revealing the messages he'd sent me."Where did you guys go?""Don't be childish, Kenzie.""Not replying? Fine. Think carefully about what you're doing."He read through them one by one. It was like reading something written by a complete stranger. He'd been so certain back then

Scotty's voice was hoarse, heavy with the exhaustion of several sleepless days."Mae, Kenzie left on her own. I couldn't stop her. I've already given you everything I possibly could—hot water, hot meals, and a dedicated doctor. Every bit of that came from me calling in favors. And now that my superiors are holding me accountable, what am I supposed to do?"Tears immediately streamed down Maelyn's face."You're yelling at me? You've never yelled at me before, Scotty, and now you're yelling at me because of Kenzie?"Scotty closed his eyes and drew a long, weary breath. He remembered the Maelyn he'd met back in college. She wore her hair in a ponytail, and her eyes would crinkle and sparkle when she'd smile. She'd trail behind him and call him "Scotty" in that sweet voice of hers. But now, her hysterical behavior only filled him with disgust and a sense of unfamiliarity. He suddenly thought about Kenzie, the woman who had always silently stood by his side all these years. I clenched my fists, then slowly relaxed them.Next to me, Dad whispered, "Kenzie… are you really going to get a divorce?""Yeah." I grabbed his arm to support him. "Dad, I can't carry you, but you have to come with me."The uncertainty clouding his eyes stirred for a moment before settling into a quiet determination. He nodded, his tone firm as he said, "Let's go."When we walked out of the hospital's side door, a pickup truck loaded with relief supplies was right outside. The driver was Sam Bevins, the man who'd given us a ride the night before. He flashed me a big grin when he spotted me."Hey! How's your little sister doing?""She's okay now. Where are you headed, Sam?""North. They just cleared an emergency access road, and I'm hauling supplies to the next town."He patted the side of the truck. "Want to hop in?"I turned around to look at Dad. He had scooped Poppy off the hospital bed and wrapped her in a thin blanket. Her face was still pale, but her breathing was st

I turned off my phone screen and shoved it into my pocket.A moment later, it started vibrating wildly. Scotty's name flashed across the screen, but I didn't answer. It continued vibrating for several seconds before the call disconnected automatically. Then it rang again, disconnected again, and rang again.Awoken by the noise, Dad lifted his head and looked at me groggily."Is that… him?" he asked, his voice rough like sandpaper.I shook my head and answered flatly, "No. Just a telemarketer."Dad glanced at me, but he didn't press the matter.By the time the sky was completely bright, hurried footsteps echoed from the stairwell.A group of seven or eight people wearing camouflage uniforms marched forward, their combat boots pounding against the concrete floor. The thudding sounds sent vibrations echoing down the entire hallway. It was Scotty. Two medics followed behind him, carrying emergency bags. That night, Poppy suddenly started talking deliriously. Her entire body burned hot, feeling like a branding iron pressed against my arms. Her tiny face was flushed red, and her lips fluttered weakly."Kenz, I'm so cold…"Dad jolted awake. He rushed over and pressed the back of his hand against her forehead. His face instantly drained of color."This is bad! Her fever is too high."He picked Poppy up, adjusted her weight in his arms, then turned and started toward the temporary shelters.I grabbed the corner of his jacket. "Dad, where are you going?""I'm going to find Scotty," he answered, not even turning around. "Poppy won't make it until tomorrow like this. She needs a doctor right now."I wanted to follow him, but my legs buckled beneath me, and I nearly fell. By the time I steadied myself and looked up again, Dad was already more than 50 feet away, with Poppy on his back. His voice drifted back through the cold night wind, trembling with tears."I'll go beg him.
