보고서
On the day the earthquake hits, my father, Collin Rimes, carries my injured little sister, Poppy Rimes, on his back, trekking about four miles through the mountains before finally reaching the emergency relief camp. His spine is bent low as he paces back and forth outside the command center in anxious hesitation before finally plastering a pleading, subservient smile on his face. "I'm looking for Captain Rubin. I'm his father-in-law. My little girl is injured. Could you please find a place for her?" The guard in camouflage frowns and heads inside to report. A moment later, Scotty Rubin's cold voice drifts out of the tent. "There are injured people everywhere waiting for help, from three-year-olds to 80-year-olds. Every one of them is just as desperate. But we follow protocol here. No special treatment." The smile on Dad's face freezes. Lost and helpless, he glances down at Poppy, who's drenched in cold sweat from the agonizing pain. His Adam's apple bobs, and he swallows the words he wants to say. Nodding emphatically, he hoists Poppy onto his back and shuffles to the side. "Yes, yes, of course. We should follow the rules. That's only right. Scotty is right." Seeing this, a sharp, suffocating pain stabs through my heart. But just as I'm about to speak up, I manage to get a peek at Scotty's phone lighting up on the desk. The latest message is to the woman he's never truly gotten over. "Don't worry, Mae. I've already arranged a private shelter for you. You and your family can all go there. There'll be hot meals, hot water, and dedicated doctors on standby." In that instant, I realize I'm the world's biggest joke. Well, since that's the case, I'll just set Scotty free.

Special Treatment for Her, Not His Wife Chapter 9
After being transferred to the city hospital, Scotty underwent surgery to clean the wound. The amputation site became infected repeatedly, tormenting him for more than half a month. By the time he was finally able to walk on crutches, his superiors' investigation team had arrived as well.Someone had reported him for abusing his authority during the earthquake rescue—providing unauthorized shelter to those who weren't disaster victims and using public medical resources to benefit personal acquaintances. The evidence was overwhelming. The hot water, hot meals, the dedicated doctor, and the priority placement of Maelyn's family in the tent—every bit of it had been forcibly arranged by Scotty using his authority and personal connections. The day the investigation concluded, Scotty sat alone in his hospital room, staring at the notice he'd received on his phone. He'd been demoted, issued a major disciplinary sanction, and removed from active duty.He stared at the words for a long ti

Once the painkillers wore off, the agony left Scotty drenched in cold sweat. He gripped the bedsheets so tightly that his knuckles turned white.Over and over, his mind replayed that split second—how he'd thrown himself at Maelyn, and how she'd shoved him into danger instead. He'd traded one of his legs for her life. Yet, she'd just turned around, taken her entire family, and left without leaving so much as an apology behind.…In the middle of the night, as the tent grew quiet, Scotty lay there alone. His amputated leg began to throb so badly that he didn't even dare to roll over. Sweat soaked his pillowcase until it clung to his face.He reached for his phone on the bedside table. The screen lit up, revealing the messages he'd sent me."Where did you guys go?""Don't be childish, Kenzie.""Not replying? Fine. Think carefully about what you're doing."He read through them one by one. It was like reading something written by a complete stranger. He'd been so certain back then

Scotty's voice was hoarse, heavy with the exhaustion of several sleepless days."Mae, Kenzie left on her own. I couldn't stop her. I've already given you everything I possibly could—hot water, hot meals, and a dedicated doctor. Every bit of that came from me calling in favors. And now that my superiors are holding me accountable, what am I supposed to do?"Tears immediately streamed down Maelyn's face."You're yelling at me? You've never yelled at me before, Scotty, and now you're yelling at me because of Kenzie?"Scotty closed his eyes and drew a long, weary breath. He remembered the Maelyn he'd met back in college. She wore her hair in a ponytail, and her eyes would crinkle and sparkle when she'd smile. She'd trail behind him and call him "Scotty" in that sweet voice of hers. But now, her hysterical behavior only filled him with disgust and a sense of unfamiliarity. He suddenly thought about Kenzie, the woman who had always silently stood by his side all these years. I clenched my fists, then slowly relaxed them.Next to me, Dad whispered, "Kenzie… are you really going to get a divorce?""Yeah." I grabbed his arm to support him. "Dad, I can't carry you, but you have to come with me."The uncertainty clouding his eyes stirred for a moment before settling into a quiet determination. He nodded, his tone firm as he said, "Let's go."When we walked out of the hospital's side door, a pickup truck loaded with relief supplies was right outside. The driver was Sam Bevins, the man who'd given us a ride the night before. He flashed me a big grin when he spotted me."Hey! How's your little sister doing?""She's okay now. Where are you headed, Sam?""North. They just cleared an emergency access road, and I'm hauling supplies to the next town."He patted the side of the truck. "Want to hop in?"I turned around to look at Dad. He had scooped Poppy off the hospital bed and wrapped her in a thin blanket. Her face was still pale, but her breathing was st
