Chapter 4

Author: Evil SIL
Early the next morning, I arrived at a discreet meeting point on the outskirts of Aldenbury.

I sat inside a black military-style SUV and signed the confidentiality agreement.

One of the agents handed me a metal case.

"Mr. Ludwig, regulations require you to surrender all personal communication devices before entering the facility.

"From this point on, your identity records will be placed under the highest level of classification. Your name will be locked out of all public and government databases.

"Until the project is declassified, you will effectively cease to exist to the outside world. Are you ready?"

I nodded and took out my phone.

"Can I make one last call?"

The agent nodded.

I dialed Dad's number. It rang for a long time before he finally answered.

"What is it now?" he asked, his voice cold. "You already gave Ian the data. What else do you want?"

"Dad, I'm not going to graduate school anymore," I said, staring out at the barren landscape beyond the window. "I'm leaving."

There was a brief silence on the other end.

Then Dad let out a mocking laugh.

"Karl, how long are you going to keep playing this little game? You think threatening to give up your future is going to make me hand the fellowship back to you?

"Let me make this clear. It's never going to happen. If you have that much pride, then don't ever come crawling back to me."

He sounded so certain, but I didn't bother to argue.

"As you wish," I simply said.

Then I hung up and dropped the phone into the metal case.

The car door closed, and the SUV sped toward the endless desert of Svardia, leaving Aldenbury behind.

…

Aldenbury University was glowing with lights.

Dad had just been named one of Aldenbury's outstanding educators of the year for giving up his own son's graduate fellowship to help a disadvantaged student reach one of the country's most prestigious universities.

That night, Aldenbury University had a celebration in his honor.

Dad stood in the banquet hall, beaming as he raised his glass and accepted congratulations from university officials and members of the press.

Ian wore an expensive designer suit—one Dad had bought for him with his own money. Megan stood beside him, her arm linked through his, pride written all over her face.

"Prof. Ludwig is truly selfless. To give up his own son's fellowship like that—what an incredible role model for the rest of us!"

"Not at all," Dad said, smiling as he was surrounded by praise. "Educators are supposed to treat every student equally. Ian worked hard for this opportunity, so he deserves it."

Just then, one of the associate deans, a longtime rival of Dad's, approached with a drink in his hand.

There was a knowing look in Hans Zoeller's eyes as he asked, "Prof. Ludwig, on a night this important, where is your son, Karl?

"I heard he's barely been attending classes lately. Don't tell me he's holding a grudge over your decision."

Awkwardness hung in the air.

"Maybe Karl is still angry with me," Ian said quietly, his eyes reddening. "It's all my fault."

"It's not your fault." Megan squeezed his hand. "He's just being petty and narrow-minded."

Dad's expression darkened.

The next second, he connected his tablet to the large screen at the front of the banquet hall.

"Karl has been skipping classes for half a month because he can't accept that Ian got the fellowship," he boomed. "As dean, I've always put fairness before family. I have never abused my position for personal gain.

"And since my son has chosen to disregard the university's rules, I am officially dismissing him from the university effective immediately."

The room erupted, and Ian nearly jumped with joy.

Once I was gone, all the research I'd left behind would belong to him.

Dad quickly logged into Aldenbury University's central student records system and entered my student ID.

Without hesitation, he clicked "Confirm Withdrawal".

But the moment he did, the screen flickered.

A shrill system alarm suddenly rang through the banquet hall.

The student records system vanished from the screen. In its place, several lines of bold red text appeared.

"This individual's records have been sealed under the highest national security classification.

"Unauthorized access, modification, or cancellation is strictly prohibited. Any attempt to override these restrictions may constitute the unlawful access or theft of classified national information."

"No… You can't do this to me, Karl," Dad cried, shaking his head desperately. "No matter what, there was nothing wrong with helping students in need!"I devoted my life to education. I sacrificed my own family so that children who couldn't afford an education would have the chance to go to school!"I snickered and pulled out a file from the folder, tossing it onto the table in front of him. "Frederick, enough with the self-righteous act," I said. "Take a look at this."With trembling hands, Dad opened the file. His eyes widened. It was Ian's actual family background investigation report. "Ian was never actually a student from a disadvantaged background. His aunt, Clara Sullivan, is a senior official in the state education department, and she's in charge of senior personnel appointments at Aldenbury University."You think I didn't know? You've been supporting Ian and showing him preferential treatment for years. You even went so far as to block your own son's graduate fellowsh

Ian and Megan stared at me as if they'd just seen a ghost. Dad's eyes nearly bulged out of his head. "Karl?"He instinctively slipped back into his usual authoritative tone, pointing at me as he shouted, "Have you lost your mind? You think you're allowed to sit there?"Do you even know what kind of meeting this is? You show up dressed like that and think you can come in here pretending to be some big shot?"Get down here right now! Stop embarrassing yourself."I looked at him calmly, not even bothering to raise an eyebrow. Before I could say a word, the two guards standing behind me stepped forward, their expressions turning cold."How dare you?"They grabbed Dad by the shoulders from either side and forced him back into his chair.Zachary looked terrified. "Frederick, have you lost your mind?" he hissed, pointing angrily at Dad. "This is Special Agent Karl Ludwig, sent here by the NSA! He's a senior official from Area 091."You're already in serious trouble for stealing

The scandal at NYSA's final defense spread throughout the entire academic community within hours. Aldenbury University's governing board was furious, and Dad's title as one of Aldenbury's Outstanding Educators of the Year was revoked that very night. Inside the dean's office, Dad's hair was disheveled, and the composure and arrogance he once carried were nowhere to be seen. He was pacing back and forth restlessly. "Prof. Ludwig, the authorities have already formed an investigative team. They're coming to Aldenbury University tomorrow," his assistant said, standing nervously by the door as he delivered the news. "There's nothing to worry about," Dad spat through clenched teeth as he spun around, his eyes bloodshot. "This was all a setup by that ungrateful son of mine!"As long as we find him and prove that he willingly gave Ian the data, I can prove my innocence."Even now, Dad still refused to admit that he'd done anything wrong. He pulled out his phone and called someone h

Three days later, the final defense for the National Young Scientist Award was held at the Aldenbury International Convention Center. The auditorium was packed. The audience included leading scholars from universities across Galdovia, along with senior officials from the state education department. Dad sat in the front row, maintaining his usual composed demeanor as he smiled and accepted compliments from those around him.Onstage, Ian stood before the giant presentation screen, confidently walking the audience through his research with a presentation clicker in hand."In conclusion, this data model not only addresses existing energy-consumption problems, but also provides a new theoretical foundation for future cutting-edge research. That concludes my defense. Thank you, members of the panel."He gave a slight bow, and the room erupted in applause. However, the lead expert from Jovendel, who was sitting at the center of the panel, didn't clap. He adjusted his glasses and star

"Useless! Both of you are absolutely useless!"Dad's furious voice boomed through the dean's office. Ian was practically in tears, while Megan stood there with her head lowered, not daring to say a word. "You've been working on this for three whole nights, and you still can't solve a problem this simple? What the hell have you two been doing?"Dad was shaking with rage. The position of vice president was practically within his reach, and he couldn't afford to let anything go wrong now."Prof. Ludwig, this isn't a simple problem," Megan finally gritted out. "Karl… He held something back when he left. "The data he gave us is missing the most critical part of the algorithm. If we can't find him and recover the missing code before the defense the day after tomorrow, we'll be humiliated in front of the entire panel."Dad froze for a moment, then anger flared in his eyes. "I knew that bastard wouldn't be that generous!" he seethed. "He deliberately left us with this mess just so

For the next two weeks, Aldenbury University seemed to settle back into its usual routine after the controversy. Meanwhile, Ian had taken the data I'd left behind and, with Megan's help, pieced together a research paper. The moment the paper was published within the department, it caused an uproar. The sophistication of its data model and the depth of its theoretical analysis were far beyond what anyone would expect from an undergraduate. Almost overnight, Ian was put on a pedestal and hailed throughout the department as a young genius. Megan posted a photo of Ian from behind, standing in the lab. Her caption read, "True talent always finds a way to shine. Without the pressure and intimidation from those who abused their power, you've finally had the chance to show the world what you're capable of."The comments were filled with praise for Ian and people taking shots at me. "So, Karl's SCI papers were only good because he was riding on Ian's work?""Exactly. Karl leaves,
