Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Fluffy Clouds
"Violet Bailey, you don't have to show up for work starting tomorrow," Maverick declared.

I looked at Maverick's icy expression as I listened to the other parents hurl a neverending barrage of insults at me. My heart ached so terribly that I found it hard to breathe.

Maverick and I had been childhood sweethearts. His parents passed away in an accident during his freshman year in university. To make it worse, he was saddled with a huge amount of debt, so he was forced to drop out.

I knew how important it was for Maverick to have a good education, so I dropped out as well and started working to pay for his tuition.

Maverick wanted to start his own business after he graduated, so we were forced to live in a small, cramped basement unit. To attract more clients to invest in his business, I discarded my reservations and wore skimpy dresses, working as a hostess and drinking with his potential business partners.

Eventually, I lost count of how many times I threw up.

Maverick's eyes were bloodshot when he hugged me tightly and swore that he would treat me right for the rest of my life.

He thought that Rosalia was the heiress of the richest family in the country. He had no idea that when I left for a "business trip" some time ago, I had actually gone to reunite with my family.

I was the real heiress, not Rosalia!

I grabbed my marriage certificate from my bag and brandished it.

"Maverick, no matter how stubbornly you deny the truth, you can't deny that I'm your lawfully wedded wife! Not only did you use our money to pay for your mistress' expenses, but you also had an illegitimate child with her.

"I'm going to file a lawsuit against you! When I'm done with you, you won't have a single penny to your name!"

The other parents began whispering among themselves as they studied the marriage certificate in my hand.

"Is that a real marriage certificate? Could she really be Mr. Gibson's real wife?"

"If so, Mr. Gibson's a terrible man."

However, Maverick wasn't flustered in the slightest even as he looked at the marriage certificate I was holding. He scoffed and said, "You're even more mentally unstable than I expected, Violet. Do you really think that you can become my wife just by forging a marriage certificate?"

He looked at a staff member who was standing nearby and said, "Bring me a laptop and a projector."

It didn't take long before Maverick pulled up another certificate on the projector.

I stared at the screen with wide eyes, my entire body shaking with disbelief.

The projector displayed a page on the Vital Records Office's website. It showed a certificate that proved Maverick and Rosalia had registered their marriage a few years ago.

"As expected, she really does have a loose screw. She's crazy enough to forge a marriage certificate!"

"How disgusting. She's willing to do anything to raise her status. Fortunately, Mr. Gibson was well-prepared."

Rosalia slapped me hard across the face, the sound ringing loudly through the air. She scoffed and asked, "How dare you come up with something so despicable just to climb your way up the social ladder?"

She then grabbed a stack of hundred-dollar bills from her bag and threw it in my face. "You love money, don't you? Take this and get out right now! If you try something like this again, I'll send you directly to the police station!"

The other parents began to praise Rosalia.

"Mrs. Gibson is such a kind person. She's willing to forgive the nanny even though she did something so terrible."

Layla rushed forward when she saw me being attacked, screaming, "Don't touch Mommy, you horrible person!"

Rosalia stumbled a few steps backward when Layla rammed into her.

Jeremy, who had been standing behind her, roughly shoved Layla to the floor and then kicked her. "You brat! How dare you hurt Mommy? I'm going to kill you!" he shouted, his words dripping with disdain.

Layla wrapped her arms around her little body when Jeremy kicked her stomach, whining in pain.

"Layla!"

My heart felt like it was breaking apart when I saw Jeremy hurting Layla. I grabbed him and shoved him aside.

"This evil lady hurt me, Daddy!" Jeremy exclaimed. "Hurry up and take revenge for me!"

Maverick slapped me hard across the face, causing my cheek to go numb. He then clamped his hands around my neck and hissed, "You shameless bitch! How dare you raise your hand on my only son? If anything happens to him, I'll make you pay with your life!"

My face turned ruddy from how hard Maverick was choking me, and I nearly suffocated. My consciousness began to fade as he squeezed tighter.

It was then that I was struck by the realization—he was really trying to kill me!

I nodded somberly as I looked into Mom's and Dad's eyes."I want to take over the company. I want to become stronger so that no one will ever bully me again!""I'll hire teachers to guide you starting tomorrow!" Dad declared resolutely. "It's going to be tough, but I'm positive that you can do it!"Dad didn't dawdle for even a second. He drew up a complete study plan for me the very next day and even hired teachers to guide me.I paid close attention during my lessons, greedily absorbing all the knowledge my teachers shared with me.The upper crust of society erupted in an uproar when news of Dad appointing me as the company's successor spread through the affluent families.I became even more of a hot topic, and the number of men who flirted with me and wanted to date me doubled. But I knew that they didn't want me because they loved me. They only loved the power and wealth that I possessed. They convinced themselves that as long as they got me to fall in love with them, they

I smiled as I looked at Maverick's ashen face. I continued to strike him where it hurt, saying, "As for your company, the Jones family shorted the stock, so it's facing a major financial crisis now."If my calculations are correct, your company will be forced to declare bankruptcy the day you're imprisoned, so you'll also be saddled with tens of millions of dollars of debt. I hope that you'll be able to pay it all off once you're released from prison."Maverick stared at me with wide eyes. "Do you have to be so ruthless? Think about the decade we spent together!"I quietly looked at him. "So you do remember that we were together for more than a decade. Why didn't you consider that when you tried to poison me to death? Why are you only bringing this up now that you're about to be imprisoned?"Unfortunately, my love for you died the moment I found out the truth. The only thing I want now is for your life to become a living hell! Enjoy your time in prison."Maverick's face remained b

Mom and Dad hosted a grand welcoming party for me when I returned to the Jones residence. They also announced to the rest of the affluent families that their beloved daughter had finally returned, declaring that they would be giving me ten percent of the company's shares.News of my return spread through the upper crust of society. I suddenly became a hot commodity and was bombarded with countless invitations to banquets.I felt a headache coming as I looked at the invitations that were piled up like a small mountain on the table.Mom chuckled and said comfortingly, "Not all the heirs are spoiled brats. I think a few of them aren't too bad. You can get to know them if you're interested. You're still young, after all. You shouldn't be alone for the rest of your life."I pursed my lips before locking arms with her and saying coquettishly, "I'm content with Layla by my side. I have no plans to get married again for now."Mom patted my head and said adoringly, "It's up to you. Your

I assumed my constitution was weak because my body had suffered too much stress during labor. I never would have thought that the man I loved had been secretly poisoning me all this time.Maverick wanted me to die a slow, silent death.Furious, Dad swept an entire porcelain set off the shelf, the pieces shattering on the ground."That beast! How could he be so inhumane? Don't worry. I'll make sure he pays for what he's done."Dad left the room after reminding the doctor to take good care of Layla and me.…Layla and I had a leisurely stay in the private hospital. My mom, Hannah Colton, would drop by the hospital every day to visit us.I had never had a chance to experience motherly love since I was a child, so I felt a little flustered when Mom showered me with her love that seemed to overflow from her eyes and everything that she did for me."You've suffered so much over the last few years, sweetie."Mom told me to lay my head on her lap while she ran her hand soothingly dow

Rosalia began coughing violently. Her eyes rolled back as she struggled to breathe.Jeremy began pummeling Maverick with his little fists, shouting, "Let go of Mommy! Don't touch her!""Get out of my way!" Maverick screamed. He had completely lost his mind. He didn't even care that Jeremy was his favorite child and delivered a powerful kick to him.Jeremy's tiny body soared through the air and crashed onto the ground several feet away. His body twitched for a few seconds before going completely still. My limbs turned cold as I watched Maverick lose himself to his violent instincts. I finally realized that he had always been a selfish and heartless man who only cared about himself.Rosalia's eyes widened as she stared at Jeremy's unmoving form on the floor. "Out of my way, you crazy bastard! You're the one who kept coming on to me!"She sprinted over to Jeremy's side and shrieked, "Jeremy! Jeremy, are you okay?"Her arrogant demeanor had completely disappeared. When Jeremy remai

Dad's hands were shaking when he pulled me into his embrace. He hastily removed his blazer and draped it over my body when he noticed my torn clothes."Doctor! Call the doctor!" he roared impatiently."Dad… Please save Layla first," I mumbled weakly as I lay in Dad's arms.Tears rolled down my cheeks at just the thought of the bruises that littered Layla's body."Don't worry. Layla will be fine," Dad said comfortingly. The kindergarten doctor arrived soon. He frowned as he examined Layla's wounds."Who would be heartless enough to beat up a child so badly? Fortunately, her bones and organs are fine. She'll be okay once she gets some rest."Dad breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing the doctor's words.Meanwhile, the doctor injected me with something. I could feel a bit of my strength returning to me as I slowly leaned against Dad.I looked up and noticed that the entire kindergarten had been surrounded by the Jones family's bodyguards. The parents who mocked and insulted me e
