Chapter 3

Autor: Angel's City
I played for three straight hours in that underground bar, surrounded by cigarette smoke and the stench of booze.

At two in the morning, the gig ended. I shoved $200 in crumpled bills into my pocket, slung my cello case over my shoulder, and walked past the dumpsters in the alley behind the bar toward the late-night subway.

But a pair of black stilettos blocked my way.

Victoria stood there in an ankle-length white fox-fur coat, with two bodyguards in black behind her. She looked me up and down with open contempt.

"Look at yourself. You're practically trash." She covered her nose and mouth in disgust as her gaze traveled from my old, wine-stained coat to the cracked flats on my feet.

I gripped the strap of my cello case and stared back at her, my face blank.

"You spend every night playing for a bunch of disgusting drunks in some basement, all for a few lousy bucks?" Victoria stepped closer, her cloying perfume making it hard to breathe.

"Matteo is about to reshape the balance of power among New York's five families.

"As the Don, he needs a Donna who understands the law, knows how the family operates, and can hold her own at the negotiating table. Someone like me.

"And you? Some orphan from the slums who scrubs dishes and plays a beat-up cello for pocket change? What makes you think you're good enough for him?"

"If Matteo wants me gone, he doesn't need to send you to do his dirty work." My voice was hoarse. I was too tired to say another word to her.

Victoria sneered. "To him, you're just a novelty. A pathetic little charity case. Do yourself a favor. Take some money and get lost. The DeLuca family has better things to do than entertain you."

I stepped around her and started for the mouth of the alley.

"I told you to stop!"

Victoria's eyes went cold. She lashed out and kicked my cello case as hard as she could.

With a dull thud, the case slammed to the ground. My old cello tumbled out, its strings scraping against the jagged bricks.

Victoria lifted her stiletto and brought the sharp heel down toward the cello's soundboard without hesitation.

"Don't touch it!" I screamed.

Cheap as it was, that cello was the only thing keeping my dream within reach.

I lunged forward, shoved her away, and threw myself over the cello.

The shove only pushed Victoria half a step back.

She could've easily stayed on her feet. Instead, she deliberately threw herself against the brick wall, scraping her arm hard enough to draw blood.

Meanwhile, my hand came down on broken glass, and a shard sliced deep into my palm.

Blood gushed from the wound, ran down my wrist, and dripped into the muddy slush. The pain was so sharp that my vision went white.

"Victoria!"

The black iron door at the entrance to the alley flew open.

Matteo strode out. Gone was the cheap jacket he'd worn to hide his identity. Now he wore a jet-black overcoat, a symbol of the DeLuca family's power.

He looked first at Victoria's bleeding arm.

Then his head snapped toward me.

Matteo's eyes widened, and he took an instinctive step toward me.

Just one step.

Then Victoria called out to him, and he stopped.

"Matteo... help me..." She clutched her wounded arm, grimacing as though she'd just lost both hands. "Do you remember the promise you made to my father?"

Matteo froze.

His jaw tightened, and his eyes reddened.

At last, he turned back and lifted Victoria into his arms.

But he didn't leave right away. He turned to me, his eyes filled with a desperation I'd never seen before, silently begging me to understand.

"Go home for now," he said hoarsely. "It's too cold out here. Just go home, okay?"

"If my father were still alive, he'd never let me bleed like this..." Victoria murmured in his arms.

Matteo didn't look at her. He simply ordered his men, "Have a doctor ready to treat her."

He spoke quickly, almost desperately, as if he were afraid I'd start asking questions.

"Tomorrow I'll make everything right. I promise. Just wait for me, okay?"

I didn't get the chance to answer.

Without another glance at me, he carried Victoria straight to the Rolls-Royce waiting at the curb.

The car sped off right in front of me.

I knew what he was thinking.

He thought I'd always be there, no matter what he did. After all, I'd sold my own blood for him in the freezing cold. Of course he'd expect me to sit in that basement and wait for him like a good little girl.

I looked down at my hand, still bleeding.

And I laughed.

Not this time. I was done waiting for him. I didn't know how long I'd walked through the freezing wind before I finally made it back to the basement apartment.

I didn't take anything he'd given me. Not the expensive chilblain cream, not the sprigs of pink myrtle, not the matching rings he'd made for us himself...

All I took was the money from my tin box: the last $120 I'd saved for the conservatory's second-round audition fee.

And the pawn ticket for my cello.

Then I slung my canvas bag over my shoulder and caught a bus out of New York before dawn.

I pressed my face against the cold glass and watched the city skyline slip away, inch by inch.

Save your excuses, Matteo.

I'm done taking your tests. For good.

Goodbye. For good.

Just before she was dragged into the DeLuca family's interrogation room, Victoria made one last desperate move. She knew she was finished, but she wasn't going to let Matteo off easy. Using a tiny transmitter hidden in her bra, she triggered the dead man's switch she'd set up long ago.It sent the FBI the copy she'd secretly made of the DeLuca family's confidential ledger while she was still part of their inner circle. It showed exactly where the money from every illegal casino under Matteo's control had gone, including the shell casino he'd set up to make me believe he owed a million dollars in gambling debts.Ironically, the fake gambling operation he'd created to test my loyalty became the final piece of evidence that brought him down.Three days later.A fleet of armored FBI vehicles surrounded the DeLuca estate, their red and blue lights flashing.SWAT officers in full gear breached the estate gates and stormed in with their assault rifles raised.Matteo didn't run.He sat on the

Sirens wailed over Manhattan.By the time I reached the building where my ensemble rented a rehearsal studio, flames were already shooting into the sky. Firefighters were cordoning off the area. Thick smoke billowed from the building as everything I'd worked so hard to build over the past year went up in flames.Victoria was standing in a dark alley across the street, an empty gas can dangling from her left hand. She was haggard, her hair wild. The right hand Matteo had crushed hung limp at her side, twisted at an unnatural angle. She looked like a demon straight from hell, her face twisted into a maniacal grin."Alaia! You had this coming!" she shrieked. Then she saw Matteo getting out of the Rolls-Royce, and her grin grew even wider. "Matteo, look! She can't play anymore! She's nothing compared to me! You should make me your Donna!"Matteo looked at her as if she were already a corpse. He strode over and kicked her hard in the stomach.Victoria screamed as the kick sent her flying. S

"The cello your grandmother left you." Matteo spoke from behind me without warning. "I bought it back. It's at my estate."I stopped dead.My grandmother had spent her entire life savings on that cello for me. It was the only thing she left me."Come with me, and it's yours." His voice was stubborn, but I heard the plea beneath it. "Come get it, Alaia."It was blackmail, plain and simple. He knew what that cello meant to me. It was the last thing he could use to make me go with him.David frowned and said quietly, "If you don't want to go, I'll send people to 'collect' it from the DeLuca estate tomorrow. I can do that."I knew the Moretti family was as powerful as the DeLuca family. But I didn't want to drag David into this mess."It's fine. I'll go get it myself." I took a deep breath and turned to face Matteo. "Lead the way."...The black Rolls-Royce glided toward the estate. Neither of us spoke."A year ago, I went to the bus station looking for you, but I was too late." Matteo bro

I used the last of my cash to pay the application fee for the second-round audition at the Paris Conservatory. When I walked out of the admissions office, I didn't have a cent left, not even enough for a piece of stale bread. That night had left me with an ugly gash across my right palm. Whenever I put even a little pressure on it, the scab split open and started bleeding again. My first two weeks in Paris were brutal.I applied for a dishwashing job at a restaurant, but the owner took one look at the bloodstained bandage on my hand, shook his head, and sent me away. I tried waiting tables at a sidewalk cafe, but I couldn't hold a tray steady. After I broke a few cups, they withheld my entire day's wages.Hunger and pain nearly broke me. One cold, rainy evening, I sat on a bench by the Seine and stared at my trembling right hand, unsure whether I could hold out until the audition. Then a black umbrella appeared above me, shielding me from the cold rain."Your hands belong on a cello, n

Three hours later, once Victoria was safely "out of danger," Matteo finally returned to their basement apartment in Brooklyn with a cheese-topped hot dog in hand.It was his peace offering.Alaia loved those hot dogs. Whenever she came home shivering after a shift washing dishes, her eyes lit up at the first bite.He figured all he had to do was bring her the hot dog and tell her the test was over. She'd come running in her soft slippers and throw her arms around him, just like she always did.The door wasn't locked. The dim bulb flickered twice, briefly lighting the cramped room. There wasn't a sound.Matteo called Alaia's name twice. No one answered. He looked around. No cello. No faded canvas bag. No Alaia. The tin box where she kept her coins sat empty on the table. His gaze moved slowly over the neatly made bed and stopped at the nightstand. The expensive chilblain cream he'd bought sat there, untouched.A terrible thought flashed through his mind. The warm bag slipped from his ha

Manhattan. The top-floor suite of a private hospital.Matteo stood by the window, staring out at the raging blizzard, lost in thought.Victoria lay in the hospital bed, her right arm wrapped in thick bandages."Matteo, I can't feel my fingers." Victoria lay propped up against the pillows, her face pale and streaked with tears. "The doctor said a shard cut my ulnar nerve. What if I lose the use of my hand, like my dad did?"The attending physician, Dr. Simon Graves, wiped the sweat from his brow and began, "Don, based on the scans..."Victoria's head whipped around. Even through her tears, the warning in her eyes was unmistakable. The doctor broke out in a cold sweat. He swallowed his words, lowered his eyes, and quickly changed his story. "It could take a long time to heal. She might even suffer permanent muscle spasms."The mention of lasting damage made Matteo's eyes widen. He hurried to Victoria's side.Victoria caught the edge of Matteo's coat with her good hand. Her voice was weak
