"What was that cheesy speech for?" James asked me when I saw him the next day.

"What do you mean cheesy? I was appreciating my wife on our anniversary." I feigned confusion as I flipped through a file.

"The same one you ignored throughout the first six months of your marriage?" He retorted with a disbelieving scoff.

"Things change." I shrugged.

"I know you Zach. Be honest with me, what exactly was that about?" He asked knowing, squinting his eyes like they could scan me through and through.

"Fine." I chuckled. "She was mad at me and I wanted her to feel some butterflies so she could get over it." I said.

"So you're saying that it was all a lie?" He asked.

"Not necessarily." I shrugged again.

"Zach," he sighed tiredly. "Stop playing with this girl, you've done enough."

"I'm not playing with her." I disagreed.

"You don't love her so stop messing with her head."

"I like her enough to want to continue being with her okay?" There, I said it. I liked her, sort of.
