Ira~

My footstep and that of the guard echoed through the walls as I was escorted from the king's interrogation room through a succession of stone corridors.

I rubbed my throat slowly and winced in pain, as the memory of his fingers around it kept returning whenever I swallowed.

I mentally pat my head for surviving my first encounter with the Lycan King, but I also understood that surviving an interrogation was not the same as being safe in his territory.

I knew that there were harder challenges coming for me and I needed to be prepared for them.

“Where are you taking me to?” I broke the silence between me and the guard, hastening to walk beside him.

He didn't say anything, he didn't even spare me a glance.

“What's your name?” I asked again, pushing my luck. But I was answered with silence once again.

“Boring” I muttered under my breath, not loud enough for him to hear it.

“Princess Isabella” he finally spoke up once we stood in front of a door, which I assumed was my room. “The King has ordered you to be accommodated in the eastern wing. This will be your room.”

He stretched his hand towards the door, waiting for me to move or say something. But I didn't. I stood there, staring at the door as the name “Princess Isabella” rang in my mind.

That was a title I never possessed.

I finally snapped out of it and pushed the door open. The room awaiting me was large, furnished with a four-poster bed, a fireplace, a wardrobe filled with expensive dresses that felt soft beneath my palm, and a private bathroom.

It was more luxurious than anything I had experienced in years, but the windows were barred, the walls were thick stone, and the only door was guarded from the outside.

I immediately understood that this room was a prison disguised as royal hospitality. Planning an escape from such a heavily guarded room wasn't going to be a plan to pull off, but I wasn't going to give up without trying first.

I ran the tip of my finger over the furniture, examining them carefully. I checked the windows, and searched for anything I could use to defend myself if need be.

My knife was still hidden in my sleeve, I wondered why Kael didn't take it from me after I harmed him with it. I quickly pulled it out of my sleeve and concealed it inside the mattress lining before the guards returned.

I heard a knock from the door, and before I could ask whoever it was to come in, the door had already opened with a servant holding a tray of food on one hand and two dresses on the other hand.

“Princess Isabella, I brought you food” she addressed me respectfully but refused to meet my eyes.

“What happened to the previous brides?” I blurted out, letting my curiosity get the better of me, and not caring about the food she was talking about.

The servant dropped a silver spoon and the clank made me wince a little. The reaction was brief, but unmistakable. The way her eyes twitched, the way her hands vibrated as she picked the spoon up, I didn't miss any of it.

Before I could question her further, another servant entered and ordered the first woman away.

The sudden interruption confirmed my suspicion that the subject was forbidden, although I did not yet know whether the servants feared Kael, the royal household, or something else entirely.

Left alone once again, I picked up the dress that was brought in by the servant, and ran my fingers through the soft silk.

The dresses had been selected in Isabella's preferred style, but one has a small embroidered symbol that I didn't recognize: three interlocking crescents stitched inside the hem.

Then I remembered seeing a similar mark in the cloth wrapped around the body carried towards the gate.

Confusion and curiosity hit me at the same time, but before I could investigate further, a knock sound at the door pulled me out of my thoughts.

Kael walked into the room without waiting for permission.

Why did everyone keep doing that? Why did they keep barging in without permission?

“Not happy to see me?” He questioned, tilting his head to the side and staring at me with those pale eyes that showed no emotion.

I opened my mouth to answer him, but he beat me to it.

“Too bad for you, it's not like I care anyway. I'm here to inform you that you will attend dinner with me this evening and refusing will be considered an insult to the crown.”

I felt my brows deep in a frown.

He could have easily sent his guards to pass the information to me, but he came here on his own to tell me that. Was he trying to get a reaction from me? Was he trying to test me again?

I couldn't help but question myself.

“Is the dinner another opportunity to test my identity?” I finally asked, giving him a wary look.

“If I wanted you dead, you would not have made it past my interrogation room” he said, with a smirk on his face that made my skin crawl.

“You already tried to kill me once” I whispered to myself but I'm sure he heard it.

His expression barely changed, but he didn't deny it.

“The northern court is not forgiving toward liars and your survival depends on learning its rules” warning laced in his voice as he spoke.

“Do you intend to explain those rules or simply punish me whenever I break one?”

Keal studied me for a moment with an unreadable gaze, then he turned around and started walking towards the door.

“You must wear the dress bearing the three crescents.”

Those were his last words before he slammed the door. He didn't even answer my question.

I raised my fist and punched the air, while imagining it was his face.

After he left, I turned the garment inside out and carefully unpicked part of the hem. Beneath the embroidery, I discovered a narrow strip of paper sewn into the lining.

There were only six words written on it.

THE FIRST BRIDE WAS NOT HIS.

Someone inside the fortress had deliberately left me a message about the previous brides, suggesting that the official story about their death was a lie.

Kael~I had no intention of letting a treaty bride rattle my wolf.I had survived decades of court games by keeping my instincts on a short leash. Irabella Everhart would not be the exception. The northern court, naturally, had other plans. Lady Seraphine cornered me at the luncheon, glass in hand, smile polished to a shine."Your Majesty, a word about the eastern packs.""You have my attention" I responded in a bored voice."My family's influence there is considerable. It would be a shame to see it wasted." She sipped her wine. "I met your bride in the library, by the way. How generous of you, letting her roam."There it was. Not a compliment, a probe. She wanted to know how far Irabella had gotten under my skin."My marriage arrangements aren't up for negotiation, Seraphine.""Of course not." Her smile never wavered. "I only thought a queen who understood the northern court might prove useful to the crown.""No."She inclined her head as though I'd paid her a kindness, and drifted a

Ira~"Restricted," the librarian said, peering at me over her spectacle."That entire wall is restricted, my lady, along with the shelves behind it and everything on the second floor, and any volume you wish to borrow requires written permission from His Majesty."My stomach sank, and annoyance followed close behind it. "His Majesty personally told me I could use this library, so I assumed that meant I could actually use it, rather than stand in the doorway admiring the spines.""You have access to the public collection, my lady, which is generous enough for a bride of your position."A bride of my position? I swallowed the retort burning in my throat and gave her a smile so polite it hurt. Fine. If the locked doors stayed locked, I would start with whatever was open. Northern law, court etiquette, which packs hated each other and why. I refused to marry into a world I couldn't even read.I was three books deep in the customs section when a soft voice spoke behind me."That one is dr

Kael~I spent the morning telling myself the reception had been uneventful, and I failed to believe it even once.I could still feel her wolf reaching for mine, and worse, mine had answered. Years of discipline had broken in a single breath. I refused to call it a bond, since there wasn't enough evidence, and the woman in question was technically still unverified. What I couldn't shake was the balcony. She hadn't begged me to protect her, and she hadn't tried to charm the truth out of me. She had looked me in the eye and told me to stop treating her as though she had no right to understand the danger she stood in.The worst part was that she was right.Killian knocked once and entered without waiting for permission."I have the report on the previous brides, though I'm afraid it's thinner than either of us hoped. There's nothing new on how they died, but one detail has been confirmed. Every one of them was moved out of her assigned quarters shortly before her death was announced."A c

Ira~"It belonged to the previous bride, my lady," the maid said, holding the silver necklace out in both hands like an offering. "The king's mother thought you might like to wear it tonight, since it's tradition for the bride to carry something of the court's history."My throat tightened, and something cold slid down my spine.“I'm sure it's lovely, and I don't mean to offend anyone, but I won't wear jewelry when I know so little about what happened to the last woman who owned it. I'd rather go in with nothing than with a ghost around my neck."The maid's mouth fell open, then closed. Her cheeks went pink, as she set the necklace back in its box without another word.I wore a plain silver pin in my hair and the dark green gown instead. When I looked into the mirror, my heart was pounding. “Let them stare. They've decided who I am already, and I'll enjoy proving them wrong.”The great hall glittered with candlelight and polished stone, and every head seemed to turn as I entered. Kae

Ira~ Killian did not shout at me once, which put him far ahead of his king. "Defense isn't about strength, Irabella," he said, circling me in the small practice hall with his hands loose at his sides. "It's about knowing when to move, and that means not too early and not too late, but at the exact moment the strike commits. The trick is to watch the shoulder, because the blade can lie to you, but the shoulder never does." He spoke so patiently that something in my chest loosened for the first time in days. "That's incredibly useful, and I'm a little annoyed no one told me sooner," I said, adjusting my grip on the practice blade. "I spent weeks being corrected by people who made every mistake sound like a personal failing, and I never once heard anything so simple." "That's because no one asked." His mouth twitched, warm and amused. "You're the first person in this fortress who asked me why instead of just flinching. Try again." He came at me slowly. I watched his shoulder,

Kael~ "Without the council," I said. Killian paused with his hand on the study door. "My lord?" "The missing name. You investigate it quietly, and not a word reaches the council." I didn't look up from the register. "I don't want another suspicious death on my conscience. And I won't give them an unfinished investigation to wave about as an excuse to take her." "Her?" "The bride." "Of course." He came back to the desk, and I felt him weigh the next question before he asked it. "Does Lady Isabella know about the appointment?" "She knows enough to ask uncomfortable questions." "That sounds like her." "It does." I closed the register harder than necessary. "Go." He went without asking anything else, which was either tact or mercy, and I was grateful for both. I had no intention of telling him about my wolf, how it had turned restless every time she walked into a room. I couldn't explain it, and I refused to discuss what I couldn't explain. I had also already spent f
