Chapter 2

Author: Heroic Thief
After getting ready, I went to the company, only to find the entrance packed with banners and ominous standing sprays. Unsurprisingly, when my boss, Mr. Cliff Murray, saw me, he looked displeased.

I cut him off before he could speak. "Don't worry, Mr. Murray. Give me one week. If I don't fix this by then, I'll resign."

"Then you'd better keep your word, Diana. This matter is having a massive impact on the company. Everyone's talking about it. Since you've already been promoted and are getting paid a decent salary, you should just give your mother 500 dollars a month and save everyone the headache."

"Rest assured, Mr. Murray. I will resolve this matter. And thanks for your trust in me."

Keeping my cool, I turned around and walked away. As soon as I walked into the break room, I could hear my colleagues gossiping about me.

"So what if Diana's sales numbers are good? She won't even support her own mother. What will our clients think if they hear about this?"

"My phone's been blowing up all morning. Clients keep asking if our Diana is the same one everyone's talking about online. I couldn't even bring myself to tell them!"

"She really fooled me. She looks decent enough and spends a lot of money without a second thought, but she can't even spare 500 dollars for her own mom? It makes me wonder how she turned out like this."

With a slight smile, I appeared right behind them. "You want to know how I turned out like this? I can tell you."

They nearly jumped out of their skin. When they saw it was me, they looked extremely awkward and scurried away without a backward glance.

While they were fleeing, they muttered something about how I was sick in the head. Yeah, I was sick—very sick to be precise. But I was now cured.

Anyone who wanted to guilt-trip me was going to get the cold shoulder, especially if that person was my mother.

It was a good thing I had already moved away ages ago. Otherwise, I would have had a hard time standing my ground.

The gossip in the office was unbearable, so I asked Mr. Murray for a week off. The moment I went downstairs, I saw Mom waiting with a mob, blocking the entrance.

"How heartless can you be, Diana? Why are you treating me like this? When you were just a baby, I even had to borrow money to make you baby formula because I couldn't produce milk.

"All I'm asking for is 500 dollars. With how much you're being paid now, you can't just abandon me!"

As I watched her sob uncontrollably, a famous influencer, Christy Burch, stormed over to me.

"Diana, you are a disgrace to women everywhere! As a fellow woman, I can just tell that you're unmarried. That's exactly why you don't know how painful it is to give birth and raise a child!"

"Stop trying to guilt-trip me. It's an adult's responsibility to raise their child if they decide to have one. I'd advise anyone who isn't ready not to pop them out randomly. Women shouldn't treat themselves like a walking uterus! She's the perfect example of one!"

My criticism made Christy furious. "Diana, do you mind if we follow you around? I'd like to see how you spend your money in a day!"

Ignoring her, I hopped into my car and sped off. The comments section went wild immediately.

"Look at that luxury car she's driving! That car costs a total of 800 thousand dollars!"

"What does she make in a year? 800 thousand dollars is a lot!"

"This company is listed on the stock market. I heard she just got promoted to executive director, so it's possible that she's making over a million dollars."

"If she can drop 800 thousand dollars like it's nothing and is living in a nice place, why is she so stingy?"

Stingy? I had money and was generous to everyone. Just not to Mom.

I went on a shopping spree, making a show of splurging. After dropping tens of thousands of dollars on bags without a second thought, I dined at a place where it cost more than a thousand dollars a meal as if it were nothing.

On the flip side, Mom was living a miserable life. Christy made a split-screen comparison. On one side, I was walking into luxury stores, spending money like it was water. On the other side, Mom was digging through trash cans by the street.

All the money Mom earned went straight to Oliver. The 500 dollars she asked me for was never really about her living expenses. It was to make me pity her, so that 500 dollars could turn into 5,000 dollars or even 50 thousand dollars later.Since I couldn't meet her demands, I could only cut ties with her. The 500 thousand dollars was all the financial support I would ever give her. If she tried to stir up trouble again, I was going to sue her, and I had already hired an attorney. With the evidence right there in black and white, plus the footage Alan had captured over the past few days, Mom was utterly crushed. She couldn't deny a thing. When she saw me lay out all the evidence, she completely lost it. "You jinx! Ever since you came along, we haven't had a day of peace! You have no idea how hard raising the two of you alone was after your dad died in that work accident!"Alan shouted, "Quit lying! You should check out the live streams of Diana's middle school teachers and classmate

Seeing Mom break down in tears, Christy couldn't take it anymore. "How could you stalk Ms. Lynch, invade her privacy, and incite cyberbullying against her?""Then what about what you did? Didn't you stalk Diana and invade her privacy as well? I admit I was prejudiced against Diana at first. I even vandalized her home with paint, and the police penalized me because of that."But Diana swore she had done right by her mom, so I got curious and did some digging. And boy, was I shocked. This woman here, who swears up and down that she's miserable, has actually been playing favorites from the very start!"Diana was raised by her grandparents in a remote town after being left there as a baby. She was 13 years old when her grandma passed away. That was when she was brought to the city for middle school."I'm sure none of you know that she started working part-time in middle school because Rhonda wouldn't give her a single cent."Even when she got into the best high school in the city, Rho

At this point, Mom could no longer keep her composure, and the onlookers were starting to catch on, too."You don't have to be afraid, Ms. Lynch! All of us are here to support you. Since we're already at the courthouse, we can go ask the staff for advice!""Given Diana's job and income, getting 10 to 20 thousand dollars a month shouldn't be a problem. Even if the court orders less, it would still be at least one or two thousand dollars. You wouldn't have to humble yourself like this anymore.""Ms. Lynch, the courthouse doors are open right now. Let's head inside to ask!"As if she would dare!My case was handled rather quickly. In less than an hour, it was over. The judge issued the verdict right then and there. Everyone who had been involved in harassing and slandering me online would be punished.I demanded that each of them pay ten thousand dollars in compensation. I wanted it to hurt. I wanted them to know that a single negative thing they said about me would cost them ten th

If I couldn't fix this, in the worst-case scenario, I'd just quit and go independent. I'd made it this far on my own, anyway. I had gotten through the hardest, darkest days of my life, so this wasn't anything I couldn't handle.Wendy felt reassured upon hearing my words. Since I had sponsored her education, it was only natural that she was on my side for now. But people were fickle, so I didn't expect her to stay loyal to me forever.Even if she were to betray me one day, I would only think it was just how things went. And honestly, the past three days off had been pretty relaxing. While hopping between nearby cities, I posted pictures of my experiences. I grabbed coffee in one spot, went sightseeing in another, and bought local specialties. It made the netizens grit their teeth in rage. Naturally, my comments sections were flooded with insults. I went ahead and got my lawyer to take legal action. With the spotlight on me, I figured I might as well make a big splash.Since these

Seeing how excited Alan looked, I gave him a small smile. "Congrats, you're one step closer to the truth."As Alan wiped the sweat from his forehead, I slid a cup of coffee over to him. Buzzing with energy, he exclaimed, "I tailed your mom for three days."During the day, she looks for recyclables and picks up rotten greens from the farmers' market in front of that influencer's camera. And at night, she sleeps in the underground parking lot of a residential complex!"She looked all exhausted and miserable. But two days ago, when she received her pension, I ran into her at the bank."She was all bundled up and acting super suspicious, but I recognized that plastic woven bag she always carries. It was definitely your mom!"After withdrawing the money, she went straight to Smoraville Residences. The man she met looked pretty similar to her. He impatiently snatched all the cash away."The guy was decked out in gold accessories and drove a luxury car. I asked around and found out he's

The contrast between Mom's disheveled appearance and my glamorous look was stark. Naturally, it once again drew another flood of criticism from netizens.Even while I was still shopping, a woman ran up to me and yelled, "Diana, are you for real? How do you even have the nerve to be out shopping after abandoning your own mother?"I looked at her coolly. "If you feel sorry for her, then why don't you take care of her? If you can't do it, don't even try to guilt-trip me. You should just take care of your own mother instead of worrying about other people's mothers!"She was speechless. After a long while, she screamed, "Look here, everyone! This is the high-ranking executive who refuses to give her mom 500 dollars!"I walked away quickly. She tried to get people to stop me, but unfortunately for her, while there were plenty of rubberneckers, anyone who actually wanted to stop me and lay a hand on me had to think twice about whether they could handle the consequences. When I noticed a
