Scarlett's POV

The nurse was going through the discharge folder page by page when I got there and Spencer sat on the edge of the hospital bed with his hands braced on either side of him.

"Twice daily with food," she said, tapping the page. "Not on an empty stomach, it'll make you nauseous and this one..." she flipped to the next sheet"...only if the pain gets above a four. Don't take it just because you're bored of the first one."

"Noted," Spencer said.

"Follow-up in ten days," She said. "If yo

Spencer's POV"You should be in an actual bed," she said, standing up from the sofa. "Not a recliner with your leg propped on an ottoman like you're eighty years old.""I've been in an actual bed for three weeks," I said. "I liked this chair. I missed this chair.""You can miss it from upstairs tomorrow." She held her hand out. "Come on."I let her pull me up, one hand braced on the arm of the chair until my leg agreed to hold my weight. She got under my arm on the side that didn't hurt and we went up the stairs like that, one step at a time, her matching her pace to mine instead of the other way around."This is humiliating," I said, halfway up."This is temporary," she said. "Keep walking."We made it to the bedroom. She helped me get my shirt off and eased me back against the pillows, and then she came around and lay down beside me, careful, her head finding my shoulder instead of my chest. The lamp on the nightstand was the only light on, the house had gone quiet around us."I tal

"If you get fever, if the incision site looks red or feels warm, if you have shortness of breath...""I go straight to the ER, yes," he said. "You've said this three times.""I'm saying it a fourth time because people stop listening after the third," she said, not even glancing up.He exhaled through his nose. "I've had surgeons operate on me with less paperwork than this."The nurse looked over at me, folder still open in her hands."She's a doctor," she said, nodding toward me. "She'll keep you in l

Scarlett's POVThe courtroom was fuller when it was time for the sentencing. More reporters in the back rows, more people I didn't recognize crowding the benches, all of them here for the part everybody actually shows up for, the ending.Calista was already seated when they brought me in. She turned her head and found me almost immediately, like she'd been waiting for the sound of the door. I didn't look away. I didn't nod either.Konrad came in a few minutes later.Nicholas sat beside me, very straight, hands flat on his knees. The judge came in and everyone stood and then everyone sat back down."Ms. Lancaster," she said. "Please stand."Calista stood, her hands were shaking, just slightly, at her sides."On the count of conspiracy to commit vehicular sabotage, this court sentences you to fourteen years." The judge didn't look up from the page. "On the count of financial fraud related to the concealment payments made to Mr. Harris, an additional four years, to run concurrently. On th

vScarlett's POVThe courthouse steps were wet from rain that had already stopped by the time we got there.Nicholas stood next to me with his hands shoved in his coat pockets, and he hadn't said much since we'd gotten out of the car. "You're quiet," I said.He kept looking at the doors. "I keep thinking about the same thing.""You don't have to defend him anymore," I said."I guess you're right," he said.I nodded and we went inside together. The courtroom smelled like old carpet and floor polish maybe. Ashfield was already up front, talking low with Richard. Emma sat two rows behind the prosecution table, hands folded so tight in her lap her knuckles had gone pale, not looking anywhere near the defense side of the room. I sat where Ashfield had pointed. Nicholas sat beside me, close enough that his knee touched mine.Konrad was brought in through a side door a few minutes later. He didn't look at Nicholas. He didn't look at me. He sat with his back very straight. The prosecutor stoo

Scarlett's POVThe room was small and plain with just a table, two chairs and camera in the corner with a little red light.Ashfield waited outside the glass with some officer who didn’t introduce himself. They’d told me I could leave whenever I wanted. I sat down anyway.Calista was already there. She didn't look like the woman I'd imagined, not broken in a way that made you want to hand her a tissue, just... stripped. No jewelry, hair pulled back like she’d stopped caring how it fell. The old confidence, the way she used to walk into a room like she already owned the argument, was gone."Scarlett," she said.I didn’t say her name back. I waited."My client would like to..." Her lawyer started to speak.“I asked for this," Calista said, cutting him off. "Let me talk.”He sat back. She took a breath.“I’m not going to waste your time with an apology you don’t want,” she said. "You deserve to know the truth, the real one."Which is?" I asked “Konrad knew before the accident," She kep

Scarlett's POV Spencer was awake, upright against the pillows, and in a foul mood. The bruising on his face had shifted to that ugly yellow-green stage that looked worse than the original purple, the brace on his leg made every small adjustment difficult. He had been picking at the edge of the hospital blanket for ten minutes while monitor beeped at steady intervals. He glared at it as if that might help. “If you tear that, they’re going to charge us for it,” I said. "You can add it to the bill, I’m already never leaving.” He scowled at the tray table. “The coffee is terrible, the pillow are so hard and if one more person tells me I’m ‘doing great’ while I can’t walk to the bathroom without help, I’m going to lose it.” “You’re cheerful this morning," I said flatly. “I’m trapped in a bed that beeps at me, so am not in the mood for cheerful.” He shifted and winced. “Also the pudding, don’t get me started on the pudding.” “I wasn’t going to.” I said. “It’s not food, Scarlett," h
