 Laura Sam Halewood’s POV

“Tell him I’m in. This time for real.”

The words were barely out of my mouth before Beta Asher gave the address — sharp, clear, no extra questions. I didn’t stop to overthink. I didn’t let myself second-guess. I went straight with him, and as we made our way to meet Alpha Zed, he spoke steady and flat, like he’d said it a hundred times before:

“Alpha Zed doesn’t do attachments. He doesn’t do softness. He needs an heir, and you’re here to give it to him. That’s the whole arrangement. Nothing more.”

I didn’t reply. Just held it tight in my head — a reminder, a rule, a line I’d make sure neither of us forgot. I went straight there, and minutes later, I was walking into the room, and there he was.

The second my eyes landed on Alpha Zed, it all came rushing back — the heat of him, the weight of his arm around me, the way his voice had rumbled against my skin when he said he wasn’t going anywhere. That sharp, terrifying pull that went way beyond any deal. I felt it flicker, fast and hot, right under my ribs. But I didn’t let it show. I stood steady, chin up, and locked it all down tight. This was business. Nothing more.

“Why should I trust you this time? You walked away. Now you’re back here acting like nothing happened. Like it’s that easy — just walk out, then walk right back in. That’s not how this works. And that’s certainly not how I work.”

Beta Asher Hartford held the heavy folder out to me, his expression steady. “Everything’s laid out clearly.”

I took the papers, but I didn’t open them right away. Across the room, Alpha Zed leaned against the edge of his desk, arms folded, watching me. Quiet. Still. Just like before.

“I know the basics,” I said, my voice even and clear — steady, like the memory of his touch hadn’t just hit me square in the chest. “Full coverage. Transplant, lifelong monitoring, every single medical cost locked in an irrevocable trust — no one touches it, not you, not anyone else.”

“Guaranteed.” Alpha Zed pushed off the desk and stepped forward slow. “My terms are straightforward. You stay in the private west wing — quiet, separate, no wandering, no questions asked around what you see or hear. All medical calls go through me first. When the agreement ends, you're free to leave. There will be no claim on you beyond what we agreed to.”

I nodded once — not like I was agreeing blindly, but like I was hearing him out before I set my own line down. “Fair enough. Now mine.”

He stopped, one brow lifting just slightly. No one probably talked to him like this. Good.

“First — Chloe’s care is non-negotiable. If anything happens to me, that trust still stands, full and final, for her life. Second — my body, my boundaries. You tell me what you need from this deal, but you do not get to decide how I carry it, how I feel, or what I say yes to. No exceptions. Third — when I walk away, I decide when and how. Not you. And if any one of these three things isn’t honored? I walk. No deal is worth selling myself short.”

Silence hung for a beat. Long enough to feel heavy. Then the corner of Alpha Zed’s jaw tightened — not anger, respect, like he hadn’t expected me to meet him straight on.

“Understood.” His voice dropped a little, rougher, sharper. “Anything else?”

“Just one.” I held his gaze, steady, even when the memory of his thumb brushing my lip tried to creep back in. “You keep your word, I’ll keep mine.”

I sat at the table, the full contract spread open before me. I’d already set my terms, negotiated what mattered most, and now I finished reading through his — line by line, clear and unflinching.

I got to the section on physical requirements and paused. I already knew every single one. I’d gone through all the testing, all the screening, every check and evaluation before. All of it was confirmed, all of it cleared. Back then I’d still let myself pull away before anything could move forward.

Now I ran my eyes over those same words again — proof that I already qualified, already met every standard. Nothing left to prove. Nothing left to redo. The only difference was: this time I wasn’t walking away.

I kept reading, every clause plain and final. Alpha Zed doesn’t do half-measures. He doesn’t guess. He doesn’t settle. Once this moves forward, we keep going — steady, consistent, until it takes. Conception happens naturally, and only the head of the medical team can confirm and verify it once it occurs. No shortcuts. No exceptions. No turning back.

I flipped to the last page. The line waited plain and final. For one heartbeat I paused — just one — and I knew exactly what I was agreeing to. I knew what this cost. I knew what I was walking into. Then I picked up the pen, steady, no shaking, no hesitation. I signed, firm, clear, my name exactly the way I wanted it there.

Alpha Zed reached for the folder, his hand brushing mine quick, warm, heavier than it should have felt. He didn’t make a big thing of it, just pulled the papers toward him, eyes flicking over my signature.

I closed the folder slowly, every word locked tight in my head.

Alpha Zed stood across from me, quiet, watching. He didn’t need to explain it again. He knew I’d already done all of it. Knew I’d stepped back before. Knew I was the one choosing to see it through now.

“Everything is clear,” I said, voice steady. “I met every physical requirement already. Nothing has changed. I know exactly what this means.”

He nodded once, sharp and sure. “Then tomorrow we begin.”

He waited one beat, his dark eyes holding mine, making sure I didn’t miss the weight of it.

“Are you ready for that, Laura?”

I didn’t hesitate. Not this time.

 “I am.”

“Beta Asher will finalize everything and move your things in tomorrow morning.” He looked up, holding my gaze. “Everything for Chloe activates the second this is filed.”

Something shifted between us then — all the business still there, but something else too. He didn’t push, didn’t crowd, just stood there acknowledging exactly who I was: someone who knew exactly what she wanted, exactly what she wouldn’t give up.

I turned and walked out on my own terms, exactly how I’d walked in.

I went straight back to the hospital. No need to rehash the risks or the timeline — I already knew them by heart. I leaned against the wall outside Chloe’s room for one long breath, then pushed the door open.

She was awake, sketching something silly on her tablet, and looked up when I came in, grinning like nothing was wrong.

Tomorrow I moved into Thornhold. Tomorrow the real work started. But tonight? Tonight I sat beside her, held her hand, and let myself just be her sister — the one who fought for her, stood her ground for her, and never once forgot who she was.

  • Surrogate for the Alpha, Bound by Desire   CHAPTER 5: Don’t Forget Who Owns Every D*mn Inch Of You Now

Zed Travis Thorn’s POV I saw her the second she walked in. Same damn aura. Same pull that dug right under my skin and rooted there, exactly like that night. She swallowed hard, throat bobbing slow, darted her eyes away fast, then pressed her lips tight like she was bracing for whatever I’d throw at her. “You ready?” She lifted her chin, tried to look steady. “I am.” I bit back a bitter smirk. F*cking cute. I spotted it anyway, her hand, hanging loose at her side, shaking so slightly anyone else would’ve missed it. Not me. I see every damn thing about her. That night she bailed hasn’t left my head for one second. Not one hour, not one damn minute. I still feel her curve pressed to mine, still taste her skin, still hear that shaky breath right before she put a stop to it all. Every detail burned into my brain like a brand: the way her pulse jumps fast under her jaw, the exact soft sound she makes when she’s close, the scent that sticks to my clothes and haunts my empty bed

  • Surrogate for the Alpha, Bound by Desire   Chapter 4: It Was Alpha Zed Alone

Laura Sam Halewood’s POV The car rolled through the gates of Thornhold Domain before dawn, the sky still streaked deep indigo and faint silver. Beta Asher drove steady, quiet, the same way he did everything, like he’d mapped every turn, every risk, every detail long before we left the hospital. We didn’t talk much on the way. I’d said goodbye to Chloe hours before, sat holding her hand while she slept, memorized the way her chest rose and fell slowly, the faint sketch of a cat she’d drawn on her wrist. That was the only reason I was here. The only thing that mattered. Everything else, the rules, the walls, the man waiting at the center of it all, was just the deal. Just the price I’d agreed to pay. When we pulled up to the main house, it was larger than I’d pictured, solid stone and dark glass. No fancy frills, no unnecessary shine. Exactly like the man who owned it. “This is the private west wing,” Beta Asher said as we walked inside, leading the way down a wide, quiet hall

  • Surrogate for the Alpha, Bound by Desire   Chapter 2: THE CHOICE

Laura Sam Halewood’s POV I stood frozen in the hospital hallway, the echo of the nurse’s words still ringing sharp in my head. Everything that had just happened with Alpha Zed— the heat, the warning, the way it felt like the whole world narrowed down to just him and me. It all blurred into nothing next to the ICU and right away. None of that mattered anymore but her. I ran. My legs burned, my bag slapped hard against my side, but I didn’t slow down until I skidded to a halt outside the ICU doors. The doctor was already there, face drawn, waiting. “She’s stable for now,” he said before I could even catch my breath. “But Laura, it’s worse. Much worse. Her pulmonary hypertension is climbing faster than our worst projections. The scarring in her lungs is spreading. Every day it gets a little harder for her to breathe.” He paused, voice heavy and honest, no soft lies to make it easier. “Without that transplant and the lifelong specialized care only the best private centers can arran

  • Surrogate for the Alpha, Bound by Desire   CHAPTER 1: Dangerous Grounds

Laura Sam Halewood’s POV “Keep your heart out of this, Laura.” The words were low, rough, carved into the quiet space between us before anything else had even happened. Alpha Zed stood closer than he needed to, one hand braced on the wall beside my head, the other resting light but heavy at my waist. His scent wrapped around me thick and warm: cedar, rain, something wild and unbroken that lived right beneath his skin. He looked down at me, eyes dark and burning, like he was already fighting something he knew he’d lose. “I mean it,” he murmured, his thumb sweeping slowly over my hipbone through the thin fabric of my dress. “This stays physical. This stays between us. You give me what I need, you get exactly what you came for. That is all.” I knew exactly what he wanted. My body. He only wanted my body, and the heir it could give him. Nothing more. I should’ve stepped back. I should’ve held my ground and kept the line sharp and clear. But his heat was seeping into me, steady and o
