Chapter 7

Penulis: Hollow Words
Clara knelt down and gently stroked Shadow's head, her fingers tracing the long scar along his back.

"His injury from that incident was too severe. He can't handle intense physical activity anymore, and that's why he had to retire."

Looking up at the crowd, she saw many people visibly moved. She straightened, raising her voice so everyone could hear.

"If a heroic dog like this can't have a normal life after retiring or just enjoy life in a regular home, then what kind of people are we? These military dogs aren't just tools. They're living creatures. They've saved more lives than most of us could in a whole lifetime!

"When I adopted Shadow, the officer who handed him over told me to take good care of him. Shadow was their comrade. Just like the soldiers, he went through harsh training and stood on the front lines of danger. Shadow deserves respect. He deserves a good life, not to be slandered by petty people!"

Trevor had still been live-streaming, hoping to stir up trouble. But seeing the crowd's unanimous support for Clara and hearing her impassioned words, he scrambled to shut down the stream.

After Clara finished speaking, the crowd erupted into applause. The young girl and the officer clapped the hardest, giving Shadow a thumbs-up.

Trevor slunk away, muttering under his breath. But even as he left, plenty of people cursed at him.

Shadow sat calmly beside Clara, panting lightly and completely unbothered by all the attention. There was no pride or arrogance in him, just quiet composure, which somehow made him even more endearing.

Clara crouched down once the crowd had dispersed, wrapping Shadow in a big hug. "Shadow, were you protecting me just now? You were amazing!"

Shadow gave her a look of mild annoyance and pawed her away, his enormous eyes glinting with just a hint of disdain. Yet after all the commotion, he refused to go back into the car.

Left with no choice, Clara led him up the building.

By then, Colin had finished his discussion with his boss and was ready to show Clara the apartment. She thought letting Shadow see the space would be a good idea. After all, he was going to be living there just as much as she was.

Because Clara had sold her apartment well below market value, the agency boss decided to buy it himself and then resell it at a better time. The contract was signed that very afternoon.

The apartment was in a prime spot and had tons of space. It'd been one of the city's hottest listings for years, usually going for just over 4.6 million dollars.

Clara let it go for two hundred thousand less, settling at roughly 4.4 million in the end.

After the contract was signed, the agency boss handed over the deposit on the spot and promised to finalize the transfer the next day.

With the deposit in hand and time still on her side, Clara decided to treat herself and Shadow. Their first stop was the nearest pet store.

Once she walked in, she told Shadow to check out the treats and toys and pick whatever he liked. Shadow didn't hold back. The moment she gave a little wave, he went on a full sweep. He selected all kinds of freeze-dried snacks, canned food, and dried chicken jerky, piling up an entire haul.

For every item he liked, Clara asked the store clerk how many were in stock and bought them all.

Shadow even picked out his own kibble. He stood in front of the big bins, sniffing left and right, then chose a few he liked.

As always, Clara told the shop owner she'd take everything they had.

But most pet stores didn't keep much in stock, so after visiting two or three places, she only managed to fill one car trunk worth of items.

And that's when Clara realized that Shadow was picky.

He only went for chicken and beef flavors, turning up his nose at cod, salmon, and other fish options. He only reluctantly picked two cans with a hint of salmon.

Looking at the trunk full of goods, she tapped Shadow on the head. "Shadow, being picky isn't good. We'll pick a variety of flavors at the next store, okay?"

Shadow ignored her completely and turned his big head away. It was clear that Shadow could be incredibly stubborn when it came to food!

So when they walked into the next store, Clara picked out a few tuna-flavored cans and treats for him. A little variety to spice up his monotonous lifestyle couldn't hurt. What if one day he got tired of eating nothing but chicken, beef, and venison?

People's tastes change, and who's to say a dog's wouldn't too?

Shadow was not thrilled. His big head sagged, his eyes rolled upward, and he looked at her as if saying, "I hate you."

Clara sighed. There was nothing she could do. Balanced nutrition was important.

"Picky kids aren't good kids. We're just buying a little, okay?" she coaxed. After several attempts, Shadow finally seemed a little happier.

When it came to toys, Clara noticed Shadow had a clear preference for plush ones. He adored every kind, no matter the shape. He even grabbed a brightly colored stuffed dog so ugly she almost couldn't look at it, and he carried it off the shelf like it was a treasure.

And some were so small they looked ridiculous dangling from his huge jaws.

But if he liked them, then they were coming home with them.

Over a few stores, Clara also bought more than twenty dog beds, making sure Shadow would have a comfortable place to sleep. Because she was buying so much, the stores threw in extra chew sticks and other small items as gifts.

That was when Clara remembered that dogs also needed their teeth cleaned.

And then there was the whole issue of bathing once the apocalypse hit. Shadow wouldn't be able to go to a pet store anymore, so Clara bought enough pet shampoo and toothpaste to last him a lifetime.

She also picked up five or six large pet hair dryers. After all, once the world went to chaos and Shadow grew even bigger through mutation, he might get wet in freezing temperatures. If his fur stayed damp, he could easily get sick.

After that came a bunch of miscellaneous items. By the time they'd made their way through over a dozen pet shops, Clara was happily stocked up.

Whenever the trunk overflowed, she tucked everything into her pocket dimension and kept going. After seven or eight trips, Shadow's supplies, food, and gear for surviving the apocalypse were all taken care of.

That was when Clara suddenly remembered the bathroom issue.

Shadow was going to need a bathroom setup, and so did she.

Once the apocalypse hit, she wouldn't be able to go outside. Water and electricity would eventually fail, which meant the toilet wouldn't work either.

So she had to figure out a different solution.

That was when she spotted the cat litter and pet pee pads in the store.

"Clara, we've known each other for so long. Don't you think it's time we started dating?" Patrick chuckled and reached out to touch Clara inappropriately.Clara glanced around calmly and asked, "Are there any cameras nearby?"Patrick snickered, and his hand was almost at her face. "Don't be shy. Relax, there aren't any cameras around. No one knows I'm here except you and me."Clara smiled sweetly. "Oh, that's perfect."Before he could even react, Clara slipped him into her pocket dimension. Then, she turned and left the park, taking a car deep into a remote mountain forest. The area was extremely secluded, half undeveloped, and rarely visited by anyone, not even hikers.Clara had deliberately chosen an extremely remote, steep spot. It was right next to a cliff with a sign a few dozen feet away warning, "Dangerous Slope, Do Not Proceed."Once they arrived, she waved her hand and released Patrick from her pocket dimension. The moment he stepped out, he realized he was standing rig

It turned out that Patrick had come over just to trick Clara into handing over the other half of her fund shares, along with the twenty million she had gotten from the Lewis family. After all, it was a large sum, and even Derek would probably feel the pinch. Now that Clara knew exactly what they were up to, the next steps were simple.Clara quietly formed a plan in her mind. If they wanted to provoke her, they wouldn't get away with it.After that first meeting, Clara made sure every subsequent date was in a public, open space, and she always brought Shadow along. She had quickly realized that Patrick wasn't a man to be trusted around women. At lunch, he had tried to wrap his arm around her waist. Later, while they were chatting on the phone, he even suggested booking a hotel room.Clara had been furious and itching to slap him, but she held back for the sake of her bigger plan. So, Shadow became her excuse. "He's too clingy and gets separation anxiety," she would say as she d

"Okay, fine! I really have something important to tell you. I know you can't stand me, but please don't hang up. I'm genuinely sorry, and I want to make it up to you," Ruth said, still in the same pitiful tone.Clara almost gagged but forced herself to stay calm. Her hand slipped into Shadow's soft, sleek fur, feeling the warmth and comfort of the animal. That was the only thing keeping the nausea at bay."Um... do you remember Patrick Harper from the International Relations Academy? The one who plays basketball?"Of course Clara remembered. After the apocalypse, she'd even crossed paths with Patrick more than once."I heard he's back in the country. I remember you used to kind of like him, and he liked you a little too. Think of this as me making it up to you. I just want to play matchmaker, okay?"Ruth's voice grew more earnest as she spoke. "I know this might sound a little unbelievable, but I promise that I don't mean anything bad by it. I just want to make it right."Clara

When Clara came back from her morning walk, she noticed three missed calls on her phone. They were all from the renovation company. They had probably called to apologize, hoping she would keep quiet about what happened. After all, if word got out that they had hired a murderer as a worker, their entire company would go under.Clara took a long breath and answered. "You need to thoroughly check your workers' backgrounds. Don't let something like this happen again. If my dog hadn't been here last night, I might be the one dead."The company apologized over and over.Clara had no intention of letting it slide, but she also didn't want to waste time arguing. So she cut straight to the point. "You want to resolve this? Compensate me."The moment they heard the word "compensate," the company actually sounded relieved.By that afternoon, twenty-five thousand dollars had already hit her account. It was the amount both sides agreed on.Clara didn't want to go through legal channels, as t

The sharp click of the lock made Clara's stomach tighten. What kind of background did this guy have? No ordinary handyman could crack a lock that fast! The first lock gave way, and the second followed just as quickly. And the man moved with surprising agility, so he was clearly a professional. But the moment he stepped inside, Shadow suddenly leapt and knocked him flat to the ground instantly.Clara stepped forward and flicked on the lights.Just as she expected, the intruder was the same broad-shouldered worker who had glared at her earlier that day.Shadow pinned him down using the same brutal move he had pulled before, making it impossible for the man to get up.When the police arrived, they cuffed the intruder. After checking his records, they discovered he was a wanted criminal. The reward for catching him was two hundred thousand!"Miss, I don't know if you should call this lucky or unlucky," one of the officers said, shaking his head with an exasperated smile. The man

That night, Clara pulled out her laptop and started downloading anything she could think of, from web novels to movies and TV shows.Shadow sat beside her, watching every flicker on the screen. Whenever a small animal popped up, he would suddenly perk up and trot excitedly around the room. His ears would be straight up, nose twitching like he was trying to sniff the little creatures out from behind the screen.Clara couldn't help laughing. She ended up downloading a bunch of nature documentaries too, thinking it might be fun to watch them with him when they had nothing else to do.And that wasn't all. Clara soon realized Shadow liked cartoons just as much. Whenever a character made some over-the-top move, he'd widen his eyes in disbelief, like he couldn't wrap his head around what he was seeing. So, Clara naturally went on another downloading spree, this time loading up on cartoons.By the next day, the anti-corrosion renovation was finally done. Clara checked the place herself an
