MasukHELENA“I don’t know why your parents insist on you leaving a month early. I thought we would spend this time together and you would leave at least a week before the exam.” I pouted trying to act cute. But I was hiding the pain buried deep in my heart. That would be the last time I would ever see him, there was no guarantee we would meet again.“They want me to focus this month.” He pinched my cheek. “I don’t want to leave early either.” He said with a smile. “I will take this time to learn a little from the last top scholar. My parents spent a small fortune to hire him to teach me. Not that I need it, I am already the best.” He tried to lighten the mood. “Zane, leave Helena. She will be here when you come back.” his mother smiled at me taking my hand. “In fact, we will bring her along the day the results come out.” she looked at me tenderly. “We will be cheering the loudest for you in the crowd.” We were in the market, his parents buying a few things for him.The carriage they hired
JULIANTwo weeks passed in a blur; I was busy helping with the disaster relief and hardly slept. During the day I kept myself busy with work but at night my mind drifted off to her. I couldn’t see her before I left. I looked for her in all the places she usually hung out with Zane at, but I didn’t find her.I left with a heavy heart. Father didn’t want me staying in the village anymore, afraid I would not listen to him and insist on marrying Helena. But I went back with him the next day without a word of complaint. I knew I had to give a little to get something out of him. That was why I had given my all in the disaster relief. The minister of works I had been working with in rebuilding the dam was so pleased with me that he kept praising me in court. father seemed pleased as well. But I had an issue. The envoy arrived as father said. The marriage alliance was formed. I didn’t object but asked father to hold on in setting the date. The princess was left at the palace living in the quee
HELENA I stayed at Zane’s home for a week with the excuse of being afraid of being home along since the roof collapsed. Zane’s father helped me look for a person to repair the roof and fence for me. while the roof and fence were being repaired. I stayed at his place helping his mother with chores around the house. Zane would go to my house during the day to supervise the work. While I stayed at his place, cooking lunch and helping with chores. On the second week the roof was done.I couldn’t stay at his place anymore. I had no other reason to. “I think he left.” I knew who he was talking about. He was helping me pack to go back home. “I only heard he went there looking for you later that day but never showed again.” My stomach dropped, my movement froze for a moment. “He came?” he nodded. “Only once.” I couldn’t relax; he could have been lying low waiting for me to show up then catch me and punish me according to the law for my crimes of disrespecting a royal. Not just any royal, t
HELENA The moment I got the silver; Zane and I hurried back to our village without looking back. None of us had to talk to know what the other was thinking. Julian was a prince and we didn’t know. I thought back to how I had been talking to him, the attitude, the challenge in my voice every time. How I mocked him sometimes.“He will forgive me for the sake of me saving his life before, right?” I asked Zane looking at him expectantly. “Does he look like he remembers you or what you did for him back then? The prince doesn’t recognize you just like you didn’t recognize him.” my heart sank. Recognition was not what terrified me.It was what would happen if he ever did remember. I had insulted him, challenged him, even laughed at him. royals didn’t forget disrespect, they punished it. that thought sent a shiver running down my spine despite the afternoon heat.We were now laying on our backs on the hill at the back of his house. I couldn’t go home; scared Julian would come looking for me.
JULIAN I followed father to his tent. He dismissed everyone, only the two of us remained in the tent. “Don’t just stand there, take a seat.” I took a seat and waiting for him to speak. “I was worried life in the countryside would be difficult for you.” he looked me over. “But now I see, you have adjusted well.” I bowed.“I have, father.” he sighed. “I never wanted to send you away, but things were getting out of control, your uncles’ fraction was restless. First, it was the fire then the assassination attempt at the academy.” I had been furious when I was told to leave the capital, the palace. I was a crowed prince and running felt like giving up.“But…” father said cheerfully slapping his thigh with a grin on his face. “Everything had been handled. This hunt was just an excuse to bring you home and to lure out the last of your uncle’s people.” Unease settled with in my heart. I lifted my head and looked at him. “You want me to go back?” father nodded with a smile. My chest tightened
JULIANThe stag burst through the trees, its hooves pounding against the damp earth. I smiled as I urged my horse forward, refusing to let the animal escape. The thrill of the chase had always been my favourite part. Not the kill itself, but the moment prey realized there was no where left to run. I drew my bow and released an arrow, it flew past the stag’s neck, missing it by inches. The animal veered sharply in the opposite direction, but another arrow stuck true, piercing its chest and bringing it down before it hand taken three more strides. I froze; there was only one person I knew who could make a shot like that. “You are losing your touch, your highness.” One of my companions laughed. I ignored him. my eyes searched the trees, waiting for the hunter to reveal themselves. Moments later, the sound of approaching hooves echoes through the forest. “I wonder who among these villagers can hunt better that His highness.” another man mocked. “Whoever it is must be a legend to outshoo
