Chapter 1

The rain pelted down on me, quickly soaking through my thin dress.

I clutched my knees and huddled at the hotel entrance like a stray dog abandoned by its master.

I wanted to leave—wanted to get away from this humiliating place this very second—but the System started screaming in my head.

"Don't walk away now! Layla, this is crunch time if you want to prove your sincerity to Kendrick.

"He was just acting out in the heat of the moment. Once he's done and sees you still waiting out here in the rain, his anger will melt into pure heartbreak.

"Have you forgotten all those classic romance novels? This is the iconic 'confession in the rain' trope. Today's downpour is the perfect catalyst to take your romance to the next level!"

I looked up at the sky. The rain was coming down so hard it felt as though the heavens had burst open.

My lips were turning blue, and my teeth chattered uncontrollably.

"I… I'm so cold," I managed to mutter out, my voice trembling.

"Being cold is the whole point! The more miserable you look, the more it'll break his heart. Trust me, he's definitely tossing and turning up in that room right now, thinking only about you."

Once again, I chose to believe it. To get back home, I had no other choice.

So, I remained huddled beneath the hotel awning, watching luxury cars pull up one after another and couples leave, pressed close together beneath their umbrellas.

Not a single person spared me a second glance.

As the minutes ticked by, my consciousness began to blur. My body went from freezing cold to burning hot.

"Hang in there, Layla! Every extra minute you wait out here is another minute he'll spend feeling guilty and heartbroken over you. When he comes out and sees you sick because of him, that guilt will send his affection level straight into the stratosphere!"

The System's voice continued to echo inside my head. Leaning against the freezing wall, I felt my body slowly slide downward against my will.

Through my daze, I thought I saw Kendrick Miller—the male lead of the romance novel I'd transmigrated into—running toward me with a panicked look on his face.

I deluded myself into thinking he would pull me into his arms, wrap his warm coat around me, and take me home.

But none of that happened.

The pitch-black night gave way to the pale light of dawn, and the rain finally began to let up.

As the hotel's revolving door began to turn, I used every ounce of my remaining strength to lift my head.

It was Kendrick.

He looked completely refreshed, his hair styled immaculately. It was obvious he had enjoyed a very pleasant night.

And by his side stood his first love, Audrey Thompson, wearing a lightweight dress.

At that exact moment, my heart plummeted.

Kendrick's gaze swept over me without pausing for even a second. If anything, his brows knit slightly in annoyance.

Audrey shivered and complained softly, "Ken, it's kind of cold out here."

Kendrick immediately took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Then, pulling her close, he guided her into the car that had been waiting at the curb and drove off.

From beginning to end, he didn't even look me in the eye.

As the car pulled away, the tires rolled through a puddle, splashing muddy water all over me.

I couldn't hold on any longer and blacked out completely.

When I woke up, I found myself in a hospital bed. A kind passerby had brought me in.

The doctor said that between my high fever and being drenched in the rain for so long, I would have ended up with severe pneumonia if I'd been brought in any later.

I lay in bed, the harsh fluorescent lights illuminating my deathly pale face.

The System was finally quiet.

I pulled up the system interface. In the top right corner, Kendrick's affection level remained at a flat 5%.

In three long years, that number had never budged.

In the dead of night, burning with fever, I kept dreaming of going home. I dreamed of the home-cooked meals my parents used to make and of my own warm, cozy bed.

I woke up crying, only to find my pillow soaked through with my tears.

The System chose that exact moment to chime back in.

"Layla, I'm sorry. I underestimated how well Kendrick can suppress his emotions. He didn't show it because he had to maintain his aloof persona in front of Audrey. But my sensors detected that he barely slept a wink after he got back."

I listened in numb silence.

It continued, "But it's fine. Even though it didn't work this time, it still showed him your absolute devotion. Let's pivot to a new strategy."

What other strategy could I possibly have left?

Other than becoming an even more obedient simp, that was.

I snapped awake with a jolt, finding myself trapped in a void of pure white. The last thing I remembered was jumping off the elevated display stage."You are not dead."A voice suddenly echoed from the depths of my consciousness. Unlike the System's glitchy, synthetic drone, this voice carried a profound and commanding authority.Without warning, scenes of everything that had happened after my death flashed before my eyes like a fast-forwarded film.I saw Kendrick clutching at empty air, kneeling beside the drying pool of blood as he completely lost his mind. He would spend the rest of his life trapped in an endless prison of regret. Then I saw the System that had once held me at its mercy being violently purged in a catastrophic storm of corrupted data. The majestic voice echoed once more. "System Operational Unit 734. Core mission failure confirmed. Severe protocol violation detected. Execution via complete system purge initiated.""Why?" I asked. "Why am I still alive?""Mi

The System and I spent the next month staying out of each other's way, maintaining a tense silence until the final stop of my touring exhibition was locked in.Opening night arrived, and all eyes were on me.Sure enough, Kendrick showed up.He had lost a significant amount of weight and looked pale, but his eyes burned with terrifying intensity.Dressed in a sharp white suit, he cut through the crowd and marched straight toward me.Under the glare of cameras from media outlets around the world, he dropped to one knee and held out a massive diamond ring."Layla," he choked out, his voice hoarse and thick with unshed tears."I know I was an absolute bastard. I was a monster to you," he said, looking earnestly into my eyes. "I'm giving you everything I own. My life belongs to you now. Please… Just give me one more chance. Marry me, okay?"A collective gasp swept through the room. The System let out a satisfied purr inside my mind. "Look at that, Layla. He's begging you. Now, do e

Kendrick had officially become the very thing people mocked—a pathetic, desperate simp.Applying that label to a man like him was the ultimate irony.Every single day, regardless of the weather, he waited outside my gallery. He even went so far as to buy out companies that so much as inconvenienced me, all in a desperate attempt to coax even the faintest smile from my face. Then, one day, disaster struck.Just as I stepped out of the gallery, a man wearing a face mask and a low-slung baseball cap suddenly lunged out from the shadows, brandishing a knife and driving it straight at me!He moved with terrifying speed. I didn't even have time to register what was happening, let alone react. But Kendrick, who had been lingering nearby, moved as though he had anticipated this exact scenario all along. Without a second thought, he threw himself in front of me, using his own body as a shield to take the blow.As the knife sank deep into his abdomen, his eyes locked onto mine, and of al

I shot to fame overnight, and the gallery organized a solo exhibition for me.Audrey could no longer sit still.Watching me successfully turn my life around drove her nearly mad with jealousy, and she began using every underhanded tactic she could think of to tear me down. She paid off media outlets to spread plagiarism accusations against me, falsely claiming that the core concept behind my winning masterpiece had originally been her idea. When I saw the headlines, I found them utterly laughable.I was no longer the helpless Layla who could be trampled on so easily three years ago.I contacted Isaac and compiled every voice recording and photo I had secretly gathered over the past three years.Everything was in there—how Kendrick had treated me like Audrey's personal maid, and how he had constantly indulged and enabled her malicious behavior.I even tried exploiting a minor loophole in the System to dig up dirt on Audrey's family, only to discover that the bug had already been

A few days later, Isaac approached me with an entry form in hand.He encouraged me to enter the International Young Artists Competition, telling me that talent like mine shouldn't stay hidden from the world. So, I drew inspiration from the bitter reality of the past three years and poured everything into my submission piece, titled "The Shackles."The painting caused an absolute sensation the moment it debuted in the preliminary round. It didn't take long for Kendrick to track me down. He immediately leveraged his financial power in an attempt to force me out of the competition.Even the System chimed in, subtly trying to sway me."Layla, you should know when to quit while you're ahead. Artists need financial backing anyway. If you make up with him, your future will be so much brighter. Going head-to-head with someone like him never ends well."The night before the finals, Isaac came to see me, his expression solemn."Layla, Miller Group wants to buy the rights to your artwork.

My eyes snapped open, and I could hardly believe what I'd just heard.Kendrick loosened his grip around my neck, a storm of complicated emotions swirling in his eyes. The System had also completely short-circuited, leaving nothing but chaotic static buzzing in my mind. So, that was his deal. He couldn't care less about devotion, but he was a total sucker for toxic treatment.Once that realization took root, it spread like wildfire through my mind.In the end, Kendrick waved his hand dismissively and ordered his men to lock me in the basement, telling me to reflect on what I'd done. The basement was cold and damp, with only a tiny cellar window letting in a sliver of light. When the System finally finished rebooting, it sounded completely shaken."Layla, you're way too reckless! But… But his affection level actually went up. I guess there's some truth to the old saying, 'Tough love is still love.' Our previous approach might have been a bit off."I ignored it.
