LOGINElliot's POV
Aiden walked up to my desk on Thursday afternoon holding a folder which usually meant he had work for me, but instead he just stood there looking at me weird. "I have a business dinner tonight with some investors," he said. "I need you to come with me." I looked up from my computer confused. "You want me to come to dinner?" "Yes," he said like it was obvious. "I need someone there who actually understands the numbers we have been working on. My usual people are useless at explaining things." "Okay," I said even though my stomach flipped at the idea of being alone with Aiden outside the office. "What time?" "Seven," he said. "Wear something nice. We are going to Aurelio's." Aurelio's was one of the fanciest restaurants in the city which meant I needed to go home and change because my work clothes were not nice enough. Aiden must have seen the panic on my face because he added "Nothing too formal, just a button down and nice pants." "Got it," I said. He nodded then walked back to his office leaving me sitting there wondering what I just agreed to. I left work early so I could go home and stress about what to wear for an hour. I finally picked a dark blue button down that I bought for job interviews. Black pants that were probably too tight but it was all I had. I looked at myself in the mirror about twenty times before finally leaving my apartment. The restaurant was in Manhattan, so I took the subway then walked three blocks trying not to sweat through my shirt. Aiden was already there waiting outside looking perfect in a gray suit that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. "You look nice," he said when I walked up. I felt my face get hot."Thanks," I said. "So do you." We walked inside together where a hostess led us to a private room in the back. Three men in suits were already sitting at the table drinking wine. They all stood up when Aiden walked in so we did that whole handshake thing that business people do. "Gentlemen, this is Elliot Hayes," Aiden said while gesturing to me. "He is essential to my success at Blackwood Tech." His hand touched my back when he said it. Just a light touch but it felt like electricity going through my whole body. The investors noticed because I saw them look at where his hand was, then look at each other. We all sat down so I ended up next to Aiden at the table. The investors started talking about numbers and projections, while a waiter brought out fancy food I could not pronounce. I tried to focus on the conversation but I kept thinking about how close Aiden was sitting to me. "What do you think Elliot?" one of the investors asked suddenly. I looked up realizing everyone was staring at me. "About what?" I said. "About expanding into the European market," the investor said. "Aiden says you have been working on the projections." "Oh," I said, then cleared my throat. "Based on our current growth rate and the market research we did, I think we could see a thirty percent increase in revenue within the first year if we focus on Germany and France first." The investors looked impressed. Aiden smiled at me in a way that made my stomach flip again. "See," Aiden said to them. "This is why I keep him around." The rest of dinner went smooth. I answered questions about numbers while Aiden talked strategy. At some point his leg touched mine under the table. Neither of us moved away, when dinner ended we all stood outside the restaurant saying goodbye. One of the investors clapped Aiden on the shoulder, then said something about how lucky he was to have such a smart assistant. Aiden just smiled but did not say anything. A photographer walked by taking pictures of the restaurant. I did not think anything of it, because people took pictures in the city all the time. We got in Aiden's car so his driver could take me home. The ride was quiet but not uncomfortable. When we pulled up to my building Aiden said "You did well tonight. Thank you for coming." "No problem," I said. Then got out before I could do something stupid like tell him I would go anywhere with him. Friday morning started normal until Rachel from PR rushed past my desk looking stressed. Then two more people from PR walked by in a hurry. Something was wrong. Around ten my phone started buzzing with texts from people I worked with. I opened the first one to see a link to a business magazine article. The headline said "Blackwood Tech CEO and Mystery Companion Spark Romance Rumors." My heart stopped. I clicked the link so a photo loaded showing me standing next to Aiden outside the restaurant. His hand was on my back and we were both smiling. Another photo showed us sitting at dinner looking at each other. The article talked about how close we seemed and questioned our relationship. I felt sick, this was bad. This was really bad. My phone rang, i saw it was Aiden calling. I answered with shaky hands. "Come to my office," he said then hung up. I walked to his office feeling like I was going to throw up. When I got there he was standing by the window looking out at the city. He did not turn around when I walked in. "Close the door," he said. I closed it then just stood there waiting. He finally turned to look at me. His face was unreadable. "Have you seen the article?" he asked. "Yes," I said quiet. "PR is working on it," he said. "They will release a statement saying we are colleagues and nothing more." "Okay," I said because what else could I say. He walked closer until he was standing right in front of me. "Do you regret coming with me last night?" I looked at him surprised by the question. His eyes searched my face waiting for an answer. I could lie, I could say yes which would make everything easier but I was tired of lying. "No," I said honest. "I do not regret it." Something changed in his expression. His eyes got darker and he stepped even closer. "Good," he said quiet. "Neither do I.”Aiden's Pov I sat in the chair against the wall and tried to make myself invisible. The board meeting room felt too small and too hot and every person in here was staring at me like I did not belong. Maybe I did not belong anymore but Marcus said I should come so I came. Richard sat at the head of the table looking calm and in control like always. The board members filled the other seats and they all had their laptops open and their serious faces on. This was going to be bad and I could feel it. The forensic accountant stood up and started her presentation. She showed spreadsheets and transaction records and talked about offshore accounts. Every word she said made the evidence against Vivian stronger and I should have felt good about that but I just felt tired. Then Vivian walked in and everyone stopped talking. She wore a gray suit and her hair was perfect and her makeup covered the fact that she looked exhausted. She sat down across from Richard and put her briefcase on the tabl
Vivian's Pov I stood in my apartment staring at the folder on my kitchen counter and my hands would not stop shaking. The fake evidence sat inside waiting for me to use it and I had been staring at it for twenty minutes trying to convince myself this was the right thing to do. It was not the right thing and I knew that but I was out of options. My phone rang and I jumped because I had been so focused on the folder. I looked at the screen and saw Richard's name. My stomach twisted but I answered anyway. "Hello," I said and tried to sound confident. "Vivian," Richard said and his voice was cold. "The board meeting starts in one hour. You need to be there." "I know," I said. "I will be there." "Come ready to explain yourself," Richard said. "The forensic accountants have found more evidence and it does not look good for you." "I can explain everything," I said even though I could not. "You better," Richard said. "Because if you cannot then you are finished and I cannot help you
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It had been two days since James brought me back here and I had barely left this room. I ate meals alone and ignored everyone who tried to talk to me and spent most of my time looking out the window at the gates that kept me trapped.Someone knocked on the door and I did not answer because I knew who it was. The door opened anyway and Liam walked in wearing another perfect suit. He always wore suits even at home like he was ready for a business meeting at any second."Dad wants you at dinner tonight," Liam said and closed the door behind him.I kept staring at the wall. "No.""It was not a question," Liam said."I do not care," I said and finally looked at him. "I do not want to sit at that tabl
Aiden's Pov Maya finished her coffee and stood up. "I have to get to a meeting but I will let you know if I find anything." "Okay," I said. She started to walk away but then stopped and turned back. "Aiden?" "Yeah?" I said. "I am glad you came in today," Maya said. "It means you have not given up yet." I did not know how to respond to that so I just nodded. She smiled and then walked away toward the meeting rooms. I turned back to my laptop and pulled up my email again. The message from Marcus was still open and I read it one more time. Someone had sent new evidence against Vivian overnight and that evidence was helping to clear the investigation. I clicked on the attachments in the email and started looking through them. Financial documents and transaction records and emails that showed Vivian moving money from company accounts to offshore accounts. It was all very detailed and very damning. But something felt off about it. I zoomed in on one of the bank statements and stud
Aiden's Pov I stood outside Blackwood Tech at seven in the morning and stared up at the building that used to be mine. The sun was just coming up and the glass windows reflected the orange sky and it would have looked beautiful if I did not feel so hollow inside. Security should have stopped me from coming in but when I walked through the doors the guard just nodded. My name was still on the access list because nobody had bothered to remove it yet. That hurt more than it should have because it meant I was still technically part of the company but only as a ghost. I took the elevator up to the executive floor and when the doors opened everything looked the same but felt different. A few early employees were already at their desks and they all stared at me when I walked past. Some of them looked away quickly and others whispered to each other and I knew they were all talking about me. The disgraced CEO who lost everything. I walked toward my old office but stopped when I got close.
Vivian's Pov I got to the café thirty minutes early because I wanted to see who this person was before they saw me. I sat in my car across the street and watched people go in and out and tried to figure out which one sent me that text. My hands shook a little when I gripped the steering wheel and I hated that I was nervous. I had not slept at all last night thinking about the embezzlement investigation and how fast it was moving. The forensic accountants were finding everything and it was only a matter of time before they connected all the dots back to me. I needed help and this mystery person said they could give it to me. At exactly eight o'clock I got out of my car and walked across the street. I wore sunglasses even though the sun was barely up because my eyes were red and tired and I did not want anyone to see that I had been crying. The café was small and quiet with only a few people inside. I looked around and saw a man in a dark suit sitting at a corner table in the back.
Elliot's POV I was at my desk trying to recreate financial reports from memory when I heard shouting from the lobby. Everyone on the floor stopped working and looked toward the elevators. My stomach dropped because I recognized that voice. It was Liam, my brother. I stood up fast then walked towa
Vivian's POV I walked into Richard Blackwood's office at exactly eleven thirty carrying my leather folder with all the information I needed to destroy his son. His secretary tried to stop me but Richard waved her away and told her to close the door behind her. "You're early," Richard said from be
Elliot's POV I made it halfway down the hall when I heard shouting from the lobby. My father's voice carried through the entire floor and everyone stopped working to listen. "I am here to see my son," James Hayes said loud enough for the whole building to hear. "Elliot James Hayes. I know he work
Elliot's POV I woke up to sunlight coming through the windows and Aiden's arm wrapped around my waist. For a second I forgot about everything bad and just felt warm and safe and happy. His chest was pressed against my back and I could feel him breathing slow and steady like he was still asleep.
