LOGINElliot's POV
My phone rang during my afternoon break so I looked at the screen expecting a spam call but instead saw a name I had not seen in months. Liam, my brother. My finger hovered over the decline button because talking to Liam meant dealing with my family which was the last thing I wanted. If I did not answer he would just keep calling so I finally pressed accept then put the phone to my ear. "Hello," I said. "Elliot," Liam said and he sounded relieved like he thought I would not pick up. "Thank god, i have been trying to find you for weeks." "How did you get this number?" I asked while walking away from my desk toward the hallway where nobody could hear me. "Does it matter?" he said. "We need to talk." "No we do not," I said. "I left for a reason Liam." "I know where you are working," he said which made my blood go cold. "Blackwood Tech, pretty bold move little brother." I stopped walking. "How do you know that?" "Mom and Dad hired someone to find you," he said. "It was not hard once we knew what city you were in. You are not as invisible as you think." My hands started shaking so I leaned against the wall to steady myself. "What do you want?" "I want to see you," Liam said. "We need to talk face to face. There is a café two blocks from your office called Rosie's, meet me there in an hour." "I am working," I said. "Make an excuse," Liam said. "This is important Elliot. One hour." He hung up before I could argue. I stood there staring at my phone while my brain tried to process what just happened. My family found me, they knew where I worked. Everything I built in the last few months felt like it was falling apart. I went back to my desk then told Aiden I needed to leave early for a personal emergency. He looked at me concerned but just nodded then said to take whatever time I needed. I grabbed my jacket then left before anyone could ask questions. The café was small and quiet with only a few people inside. I saw Liam sitting at a table in the back looking at his phone. He was wearing an expensive suit because of course he was. Liam never wore anything that cost less than a thousand dollars. He looked up when I walked over then stood to hug me but I stepped back. His face fell but he sat down so I sat across from him. "You look good," he said. "Different but good." "What do you want Liam?" I asked because I did not have time for small talk. "Mom and Dad are worried sick about you," he said while leaning forward. "You just disappeared without telling anyone where you were going. Do you know what that did to them?" "They will survive," I said flat. "Elliot come on," Liam said. "I know you were upset about the engagement they wanted but running away was not the answer." "It was the only answer," I said. "They wanted me to marry someone I did not love then spend my whole life running a company I did not care about. That is not living Liam, that is dying slowly." "So what are you doing now?" he asked. "Working as some assistant for pennies when you could have everything?" "I am happy," I said. "For the first time in my life I am actually happy." Liam looked at me like I was speaking another language. "You are happy being poor?" "I am not poor," I said. "I have enough money to pay my rent and buy food. That is all I need." "That is not all you need," Liam said then ran his hand through his hair which he only did when he was stressed. "Dad is planning something Elliot. He is not going to let you stay here playing normal person." My stomach dropped. "What do you mean?" "He is talking about forcing you back," Liam said quiet. "Even if it means causing problems at your workplace. He knows people everywhere including at Blackwood Tech. One phone call from him and you could lose your job." "He would not do that," I said but even as I said it I knew it was a lie. My father would do anything to get what he wanted. "He would and he will," Liam said. "Unless you come home willingly. Just come back Elliot, marry the girl and run the company. It is not as bad as you think." "Yes it is," I said while standing up. "And I am not coming back. Tell Dad he can do whatever he wants but I am not leaving." "Elliot wait," Liam said but I was already walking toward the door. He called my name again but I did not turn around. I walked back to the office fast while my brain spun with everything Liam said. My father was planning something which meant I needed to be ready. But ready for what? What could he possibly do that would force me back home? When I got close to Blackwood Tech I saw a black car parked across the street with tinted windows so dark you could not see inside. Something about it felt wrong, the car was too nice and too out of place just sitting there. I stopped walking then stared at it. The engine was running, I could see exhaust coming from the back. Someone was inside and watching. I pulled out my phone then pretended to look at it while I kept my eyes on the car. It did not move. Whoever was inside was definitely watching the building or maybe watching me specifically. My heart started racing because this had to be connected to what Liam said. My father hired someone to follow me, the black car was proof that my family was not going to leave me alone. I walked into the building fast then went straight to the bathroom where I locked myself in a stall. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely hold my phone. Everything was falling apart and I did not know how to stop it.Elliot's Pov I did not respond because I did not know what else to say. Liam meant well but his kind of help always came with strings attached. He wanted to protect me but he also wanted to control me and I was done being controlled by anyone. The city lights appeared in the distance and I felt a mix of fear and determination. I was going back to the place that fired me and the place where everyone thought I was either a criminal or a victim. I did not know which was worse. "Where exactly do you want to go?" the driver asked as we entered the city. "Drop me at the Blackwood Tech main building," I said. "At this hour?" the driver asked. "It will be closed." "I know," I said. "Just drop me there." The driver shrugged again and drove through the empty streets. At two in the morning the city looked different. Quieter and darker and almost peaceful. A few people walked on the sidewalks and some bars were still open but most places were closed. We pulled up in front of Black
Elliot's Pov I sat on my bed watching the clock on the wall tick past nine and then ten and then eleven. The house was finally getting quiet as everyone went to their rooms. I heard James walk past my door and stop for a second before continuing down the hallway. He was checking to make sure I was still here. I was still here but not for long. At midnight I got up and pulled a small bag out from under my bed. I had packed it earlier with just the basics because I did not need much. A change of clothes and my wallet and my phone charger and the glass paperweight Aiden gave me. I did not know why I packed that last thing but I could not leave it behind. I changed into dark clothes so I would be harder to see and put on my sneakers. Then I sat on the edge of my bed and waited another thirty minutes to make sure everyone was really asleep. The house was silent except for the usual creaking sounds old houses make. I stood up and grabbed my bag and walked to my bedroom door. I opened i
Aiden's Pov I sat in the chair against the wall and tried to make myself invisible. The board meeting room felt too small and too hot and every person in here was staring at me like I did not belong. Maybe I did not belong anymore but Marcus said I should come so I came. Richard sat at the head of the table looking calm and in control like always. The board members filled the other seats and they all had their laptops open and their serious faces on. This was going to be bad and I could feel it. The forensic accountant stood up and started her presentation. She showed spreadsheets and transaction records and talked about offshore accounts. Every word she said made the evidence against Vivian stronger and I should have felt good about that but I just felt tired. Then Vivian walked in and everyone stopped talking. She wore a gray suit and her hair was perfect and her makeup covered the fact that she looked exhausted. She sat down across from Richard and put her briefcase on the tabl
Vivian's Pov I stood in my apartment staring at the folder on my kitchen counter and my hands would not stop shaking. The fake evidence sat inside waiting for me to use it and I had been staring at it for twenty minutes trying to convince myself this was the right thing to do. It was not the right thing and I knew that but I was out of options. My phone rang and I jumped because I had been so focused on the folder. I looked at the screen and saw Richard's name. My stomach twisted but I answered anyway. "Hello," I said and tried to sound confident. "Vivian," Richard said and his voice was cold. "The board meeting starts in one hour. You need to be there." "I know," I said. "I will be there." "Come ready to explain yourself," Richard said. "The forensic accountants have found more evidence and it does not look good for you." "I can explain everything," I said even though I could not. "You better," Richard said. "Because if you cannot then you are finished and I cannot help you
Elliot's PovI sat on my bed staring at the wall and counting the flowers on the wallpaper. There were forty three of them and I had counted them five times already because I had nothing else to do. My room felt smaller than I remembered and the air was too thick and I could not breathe right. It had been two days since James brought me back here and I had barely left this room. I ate meals alone and ignored everyone who tried to talk to me and spent most of my time looking out the window at the gates that kept me trapped.Someone knocked on the door and I did not answer because I knew who it was. The door opened anyway and Liam walked in wearing another perfect suit. He always wore suits even at home like he was ready for a business meeting at any second."Dad wants you at dinner tonight," Liam said and closed the door behind him.I kept staring at the wall. "No.""It was not a question," Liam said."I do not care," I said and finally looked at him. "I do not want to sit at that tabl
Aiden's Pov Maya finished her coffee and stood up. "I have to get to a meeting but I will let you know if I find anything." "Okay," I said. She started to walk away but then stopped and turned back. "Aiden?" "Yeah?" I said. "I am glad you came in today," Maya said. "It means you have not given up yet." I did not know how to respond to that so I just nodded. She smiled and then walked away toward the meeting rooms. I turned back to my laptop and pulled up my email again. The message from Marcus was still open and I read it one more time. Someone had sent new evidence against Vivian overnight and that evidence was helping to clear the investigation. I clicked on the attachments in the email and started looking through them. Financial documents and transaction records and emails that showed Vivian moving money from company accounts to offshore accounts. It was all very detailed and very damning. But something felt off about it. I zoomed in on one of the bank statements and stud
Elliot's POV I caught up to Aiden in his office where he was throwing things into a cardboard box. Files and photos and awards he had earned over the years all getting tossed in without any care. His hands were shaking but his face was stone. "Aiden," I said from the doorway. He didn't look up.
Vivian's POV I walked into Richard Blackwood's office at exactly eleven thirty carrying my leather folder with all the information I needed to destroy his son. His secretary tried to stop me but Richard waved her away and told her to close the door behind her. "You're early," Richard said from be
Elliot's POV The office felt different when we walked in. Everyone was whispering and looking at us then looking away fast when we noticed. News about the board vote must have spread already because people kept their heads down when Aiden walked past. I went straight to my desk while Aiden headed
Aiden's Pov I stood outside Blackwood Tech at seven in the morning and stared up at the building that used to be mine. The sun was just coming up and the glass windows reflected the orange sky and it would have looked beautiful if I did not feel so hollow inside. Security should have stopped me f
