The roller coaster plummeted, my stomach dropping with it as the twins shrieked with delight on either side of me. Their small hands clutched mine with surprising strength, Alex's face lit with excitement, Austin's eyes squeezed shut but his mouth stretched in a wild grin.

For them, this was just an unexpected adventure. For me, it was escape.

Three hours of manufactured fun hadn't quieted the alarm bells still ringing in my head. Elizabeth Walton's profile, that aristocratic nose and steely gaze, had haunted me through cotton candy and carousel rides.

"Again!" Austin demanded as we stumbled off the platform, his hair sticking up in all directions.

"Let's find Tina first," I said, scanning the crowd for my assistant. She'd arrived an hour after us, her face tight with questions I'd avoided answering.

We found her near the lemonade stand, phone pressed to her ear. When she spotted us, she quickly ended her call.

"Who was that?" I asked, the paranoia I'd spent years cultivating flaring

I check my watch for the fifth time in ten minutes. 8:55 AM. Michael would arrive soon, excited to spend the day with the twins. My stomach twists into knots. They're downstairs now, dressed in their matching blue polo shirts and khaki shorts, backpacks ready for the museum trip Michael promised.I take a deep breath, my phone clutched in my hand. The text I sent thirty minutes ago still shows as read, but with no response. *I'm sorry, but plans have changed. The boys won't be available today.*The doorbell rings. My heart pounds against my ribs like it wants to escape. "I'll get it!" Austin shouts from downstairs."No!" I race down the spiral staircase, nearly tripping over the last step. "Stay in the kitchen with Alex."The twins exchange confused glances, but obey. I smooth my blouse, tuck a strand of hair behind my ear, and open the door.Michael stands there, wearing dark jeans and a casual button-down, a stark difference from his usual tailored suits. His face brightens at the

"Get back upstairs, Austin. Now!" I snapped, stepping between my son and Michael."But Mom—""Now!" My voice cracked like a whip.Austin's eyes widened. I rarely used that tone with him. His bottom lip trembled as he backed away, but not before shooting one more curious glance at Michael."Is everything okay?" Alex appeared at the top of the stairs, rubbing sleep from his eyes. Perfect. Just what I needed—both boys awake for this nightmare."Everything's fine," I called up, my forced cheerfulness fooling no one. "Go back to bed, both of you. We'll talk in the morning.""But that's—" Alex started."In the morning, Alex!" I cut him off, hands shaking. "This isn't up for discussion."The boys retreated, whispering furiously to each other. I turned back to Michael, fury bubbling up inside me."Who the hell do you think you are?" I hissed, keeping my voice low enough that the boys wouldn't hear, but injecting every syllable with venom. "Showing up at my house in the middle of the night, an

~ Few Hours Later ~The doorbell rang just as I was pouring myself a much-needed glass of wine. My shoulders tensed, the bottle suspended mid-air. Only one person would show up unannounced at nine-thirty on a Tuesday night."Mommy?" Austin called from upstairs. "Someone's at the door!""I know, sweetheart," I called back, setting the bottle down with trembling fingers. "Stay upstairs with your brother. I'll handle it."The boys had been restless all evening, as if they could sense the storm coming. I'd tucked them in an hour ago, but knew they were still awake, whispering in the dark. They were too smart not to notice the tension vibrating through our new house since Elizabeth had spotted us at the park. The doorbell rang again, more insistent this time."I'm coming," I muttered, smoothing down my shirt and running fingers through my hair. Eight years vanished in an instant, leaving me feeling like that broken woman again. I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and strode to the

My stomach dropped. One Walton I might handle, but both? And Elizabeth had always been the more formidable opponent."Boys, why don't you show Tina that science project in your room?" I suggested, trying to keep my voice casual.Alex—perceptive as always—frowned. "Is something wrong, Mom?""No, sweetheart. I just need to talk to your grandfather and... his wife."Nelson turned to me. "I can ask her to leave."The offer surprised me. "Would she listen?""Probably not," he admitted. "But I could try, if you prefer."The doorbell rang again, more insistently this time."It's fine," I lied. "Boys, upstairs please. I'll call you when we're done."After they reluctantly retreated with Tina, I squared my shoulders and opened the door.Elizabeth Walton stood on my porch, impeccably dressed in a tailored navy suit that probably cost more than three months of my rent. Her silver-blonde hair was swept into an elegant chignon, not a strand out of place. Unlike Nelson, she hadn't aged much in eigh

Jessica's smile faltered. Before she could respond, the sound of tires on gravel caught our attention. A sleek black town car pulled into the driveway, Nelson Walton emerging from the back seat.My father-in-law—ex-father-in-law—stood tall despite his seventy years, silver hair gleaming in the morning light. His eyes, the same piercing blue that my sons had inherited, fixed on the doorway where we stood."Now the real fun begins," Jessica murmured, triumph edging her voice.I turned to my sons. "Boys, go back upstairs with Tina. Now.""But Mom—""Now, Alex."As they reluctantly retreated, I faced the approaching storm. Nelson's purposeful stride. Jessica's smug expression. And somewhere across the ocean, Michael, still unaware that his carefully constructed world was about to implode.Nelson finally walked to the door has his gaze shifted from me to Jessica, his expression hardening. "I thought I made it clear you were no longer welcome at family matters, Jessica."My sister's shoulde

The phone jolted me awake, its sharp ring slicing through my dreams. 3:47 AM. Only one person would call at this hour."Tell me Elizabeth hasn't done anything stupid," I said, my voice still rough with sleep."Worse." Samantha's voice crackled through the line. "She's telling everyone. The whole Walton circle knows about the twins."My stomach clenched. I sat up, sheets pooling around my waist, suddenly wide awake. "How bad?""She cornered Nelson at their country club. Made quite the scene. 'Our grandsons, Nelson. Michael's blood. Eight years she kept them from us.'" Samantha's impression of Elizabeth's clipped tone was eerily accurate. "Half of New Jersey's elite watched the show.""Shit." I pressed my palm against my forehead, feeling a headache building. "I wanted to control how this played out.""That ship sailed the moment you decided to parade the boys in front of Elizabeth at the park.""I wasn't *parading* them—""Save it." Sam's voice softened. "What's your next move?"I glan

Morning sunlight streamed through the kitchen windows as I poured orange juice into twin glasses. My hands were steady despite the hurricane raging inside me. Today was the day."Mom, can we wear our new sneakers to the park?" Austin asked, shoveling cereal into his mouth at a pace that made me wince."Slow down before you choke," I said, sliding a napkin toward him. "And yes, you can wear them."Alex studied me over his glass of juice. "You look different today."I glanced down at my outfit—a cream silk blouse tucked into tailored black pants, pearl earrings, designer heels I hadn't worn in years. The Anna Collins my sons knew typically dressed in comfortable business casual, not power outfits designed to intimidate."I have meetings," I said, which wasn't a lie. "Important ones."Tina arrived as the boys finished breakfast, carrying a portfolio and my favorite coffee."The car's outside," she said, handing me the steaming cup. Her eyes darted to the twins. "Everything's in place."I

The For Sale sign disappeared from the front lawn of 142 Oakwood Drive three days after I signed the lease. A prestigious address in the heart of New Jersey's most exclusive neighborhood—just four blocks from the Walton estate."You're playing with fire," Samantha said, helping me unpack boxes in the spacious kitchen while the twins explored the backyard.I set down a stack of plates with more force than necessary. "I'm done hiding."Through the bay window, I watched Alex and Austin race around the garden, their laughter floating through the open patio doors. Eight years old and bursting with energy that reminded me so much of their father it made my chest ache."Mom! There's a treehouse!" Austin yelled, his dark hair—Michael's hair—flopping across his forehead as he scrambled up the wooden ladder.Alex, always more cautious, circled the tree first. "Is it safe?"My stomach twisted. That calculating gaze, that tilt of the head—pure Michael Walton.Samantha followed my gaze. "They look

My knuckles whitened as I gripped the edge of my desk. "Book the flight for tonight. I need to be in Millbrook by morning."Daniel shook his head, his expression grim. "With all due respect, Mr. Walton, that would be a catastrophic mistake.""They're my *sons*," I hissed, the words still foreign on my tongue. "My flesh and blood, who've lived eight years without knowing their father.""Exactly." Daniel remained unflinchingly calm. "Eight years. Another few days won't change anything."I paced the length of my office, past the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline. The city lights blurred through unshed tears I refused to acknowledge."You don't understand. Every minute that passes is another minute lost.""I understand better than you think." Daniel's voice dropped. "I have three kids of my own. And if I've learned anything as a father, it's that rushing in without a plan when emotions are running high is how you make mistakes you can't take back."I stopped pacin
