Once they were out of earshot, Michael handed me his phone. On the screen was a particularly vicious article, complete with photos of me entering my office building, side-by-side with old pictures from our marriage.

"Jessica did this," he said, voice low and dangerous. "From jail. Miller's been feeding her information on your routine, your schedule. They've been planning this for weeks."

"How could she know so much about our fertility treatments?" I whispered. "Those details were private."

Michael's jaw tightened. "My mother. Years ago, before she..." he hesitated, "...came around. She kept extensive notes on everything. Jessica must have had access."

"Your mother?" Betrayal, fresh and sharp, lanced through me. "After everything, she's still working with Jessica?"

"No," Michael said firmly. "Not anymore. Elizabeth is furious. She's the one who tipped me off about the story breaking."

I blinked in surprise. Elizabeth Walton, defending me. The world had truly turned upside down.

~ Aria POV ~ My heart hammered against my ribs as Michael's fingers stayed laced with mine, guiding me up the staircase of the beach house. The warmth of his palm against mine sent electricity shooting up my arm. Eight years. Eight years since I'd felt his touch like this. The boys were fast asleep in their room down the hall, exhausted from building sandcastles and swimming until sunset. Now it was just us, the moonlight spilling through the windows, casting long shadows on the walls.I couldn't stop thinking about the kiss. That damn kiss on the beach that broke down every wall I'd carefully constructed since the day I found him with Jessica. His lips had tasted like salt and promises—promises I wasn't sure I could trust yet."You're quiet," Michael whispered, pausing at the top of the stairs. His eyes caught the silver moonlight, turning them almost translucent."I'm just..." The words caught in my throat. "This is a lot."His thumb traced circles on my hand. "We can just talk, Ar

The twins' bedroom door clicked shut as I tucked the last blanket around Austin's shoulders. His breathing had already deepened into sleep, exhausted from our day of snorkeling along the reef. Alex had crashed twenty minutes earlier, mid-sentence about the sea turtle we'd spotted.I lingered in the hallway, suddenly aware of the quiet house and what it meant—Aria and I, alone, with no business calls, no lawyers, no past hovering between us like a specter. Just us and the endless Caribbean night. The sliding door to the deck stood partially open, and through the gap, I caught sight of her. Silhouetted against the moonlight, Aria stood at the railing, her hair lifted by the breeze. She'd changed into a simple white sundress that glowed almost blue in the darkness. My throat tightened. How many nights had I dreamed of her like this? Standing at the edge of something vast and unknowable, somehow both fragile and indestructible at once.I stepped onto the deck, my bare feet silent against

~ Michael POV ~The seaplane skimmed across the turquoise water, sending up a spray that caught the sunlight like scattered diamonds. My stomach clenched—not from the landing, but from watching Aria's profile as she gazed out the window. Eight years without her, and now she sat just inches away, close enough to touch but still somehow unreachable."Dad! Look!" Austin pressed his face against the glass, his breath fogging it. "Is that our island?"*Our island.* The words hit me like a physical blow. I'd bought the private Caribbean property years ago as an investment, never imagining I'd bring my sons here. Sons I hadn't known existed until months ago."That's it," I confirmed, my voice rougher than intended. "The white beach on the north side is where we'll be staying."Alex, always more reserved than his brother, studied me with eyes so like my own it was unnerving. "How big is it?""About forty acres. Small enough to explore in a day, big enough for privacy.""Privacy from who?" Aus

The first day of the official merger felt like walking into a lion's den wearing meat-scented perfume. My heels clicked against the marble lobby of Halgate Tower, each step echoing my heartbeat. Employees from both companies lined the atrium—Michael's team on one side, mine on the other—like opposing armies at a truce signing.Nobody seemed to know where to look. Or maybe they were all looking too much."You ready for this?" Michael asked quietly, his hand hovering near the small of my back but not quite touching me.I smoothed nonexistent wrinkles from my navy power suit. "I've been preparing for eight years."Not for this exact scenario, of course. When I'd built my company from nothing, I never imagined standing here as a partner rather than a conqueror. The irony wasn't lost on me.Tina approached, tablet in hand, her usual calm facade slightly cracked around the edges. "The boardroom is set up, and people are... mingling.""By 'mingling,' you mean sizing each other up like heavyw

The night air held a chill as Michael and I slipped away from the Halgate Gala's golden light and relentless small talk. My heels sank into the damp grass with each step toward the balcony's edge. Nelson's public toast still rang in my ears: "To family—lost, found, and rebuilt."Words. Just words. But his face when he'd said them—that hadn't been just for show. The tremor in his voice, the way Elizabeth had squeezed his hand. Even she had managed something close to sincerity tonight."You're quiet," Michael said, his shoulder brushing mine as we leaned against the stone railing. The garden below stretched into darkness, punctuated by soft landscape lighting. I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. "Just... processing. It's been a lot.""Understatement of the decade." He smiled, but his eyes stayed serious. The champagne glass felt cool against my palm. "To be honest, I'm still not sure I trust any of it.""The apology?""Any of it. This." I gestured vaguely between us. "Us standin

"Michael," she nodded to her son before turning to me. "Aria. I'm surprised to see you here.""I was invited," I replied evenly. "As was our company."Her lips thinned at the word "our," her gaze flicking between Michael and me."Where are my grandsons?" she asked, changing tactics."With Father at the dessert table," Michael answered. "Mother, may I have a word with you? In private?"Elizabeth's perfectly penciled eyebrows rose a fraction. "Of course, dear."As they stepped away, I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. Eight years had done nothing to diminish Elizabeth Walton's ability to make a room feel ten degrees colder with her presence.I made my way to our assigned table, needing a moment to collect myself. To my surprise, Marcus was already seated there, looking uncomfortable in his formal wear."Aria," he greeted me with genuine warmth. "It's good to see you.""You too, Marcus." I sat beside him, grateful for a friendly face. "How are you holding up with all the
