I've never shopped with an elite before. The only three designer clothing items I had were bought from second–hand stores and those had been on flash sales.

When I had asked Alice why she decided to take me shopping and why we even needed to, she had looked at me, aghast and appalled. "My father's sixty–fifth birthday is on Sunday, Maddie. That's in three days. THREE days. We need to shop for new clothes to get ready."

And when I had asked her if this was all necessary, she had said, fuck yeah it is!

And the first place she took me to was a Pandora outlet store, declaring that the most important thing on us that day must be our jewelry. And we had to pick the best jewelry out there and choose an outfit that would go with that jewelry. As opposed to the conventional way of choosing an outfit first and then, picking out jewelry to go with the outfit.
