STELLA

No… I wasn’t going to cry, I told myself as I rushed out of the building and into the street. The tears threatened to spill from the corner of my eyes.

I didn’t even care that people stared at me as I brushed past them. This was New York anyway—nobody liked minding their own business. But the hurt I felt inside drowned everything out.

Why did it hurt this much? Why did seeing James with another woman hurt this much? It wasn’t supposed to feel like this. It wasn’t supposed to feel like my heart was being ripped out of my chest.

This wasn’t real. Our relationship wasn’t real. It was just a façade, just a contract a convenient way to get his mother off his back. It was just an arrangement, nothing more. That was what I kept telling myself to make myself feel better, but it wasn’t working.

And the image of that woman sitting on James, kissing him… it kept replaying in my head over and over again. And the worst part? He hadn’t even noticed me standing there the entire time.

STELLAI woke up earlier than usual, got out of bed, and walked to the window, pushing the curtain aside. The sun was just rising, and it was beautiful.I just stood there feeling numb. I wasn’t sure I even slept last night—I was just in bed, unable to sleep or even think straight. My suitcase was still half unpacked, but I had to go to work, so I quickly freshened up and put on a black dress. Looking at myself in the mirror, I saw the dark circles under my eyes and how pale my skin looked.I gently applied light makeup to cover it up and let my hair down. I looked myself over in the mirror and…I looked okay, I guess. When I got to my room door, I hesitated—my hands trembling as I contemplated whether to leave or not. I didn’t want to bump into him.And there was no way in hell I would drive in the same car with him. But when I finally stepped out, the entire house was quiet.I made my way downstairs. His driver was standing there, and he opened the door to one of his cars for me.“Wh

FREYA“Freya, he doesn’t want me… he has some girl he likes. And why do you even need me to get close to him?”“That’s on a need-to-know basis,” I said, passing the room. I thought this was going to work. I had it all planned out in my head—she would be what leads to his downfall.“I’m done with this… whatever this is.”I turned to look at her. “You are not done until I say you are. If you want my family’s help, you will do exactly as I say.” I leaned in closer. “I know what you did when you were in college.”Panic spread across her face. “I… I don’t know what you are talking about…”“Yes, you do. James’s mother made everything disappear, but I know your reckless driving killed someone that night—and I can make everything resurface.”She froze, surprised by my words. I just smiled at her.Her lips trembled, and I saw the color drain from her face. “You can’t prove anything,” she whispered, her voice cracked. Even when she tried to sound confident, she was terrified.I smiled. “Oh darl

STELLAI ran my hand over the zipper of my suitcase and sighed softly as I folded the last of my clothes and arranged them inside.I looked around the room I had stayed in for the past few days. This place felt like home, and I hadn’t realized it until now.But now it was time to go back. James’s mother was doing so much better, and I didn’t want to overstay my welcome.I glanced around the room one last time when I heard a soft knock on the door. “Come in,” I said gently as I pulled the suitcase upright. The door opened, and James’s mother walked in.She looked stronger now her color returning, her steps no longer fragile. There was a warmth in her eyes as she looked at me. For a moment, I wondered who was comforting who.“You’re leaving already?” she asked, her voice carrying so much sadness.“You’re doing so much better now, Mrs. Hawthorne. I thought maybe it’s time I go back to James’s penthouse. I didn’t want to impose too long, and I still have to work at the company.”She stepp

JAMESPick... up, pick up, Stella, please. I had called her number for the tenth time in the last hour, it kept sending me straight to voicemail. And she wasn't responding to any of my texts. I felt the knot in my chest tighten. Was she okay? Was she safe? That was all that kept going through my head because it was already getting late.“Still nothing?” my mother asked, her voice soft but trembling as she paced the room, eyes drifting towards the door. And I wasn't even sure where the hell I was going to start looking for her from. My mother’s eyes searched mine as if she was looking for reassurance that I couldn’t give.I forced a smile I didn’t feel. “She’s probably fine… maybe she just needs space.”But the words felt bitter in my mouth. Of course she needed space who wouldn’t after what she’d just seen? She probably thought I used her just for her body.Oh God, this was bad. My mother shook her head. “I don’t fucking know where that bitch you call Adeline came from. She better cou

STELLA“What….” I said with a mouth full of well-cooked bacon. He laughed. “Nothing. I just thought you weren’t hungry… or isn’t that what you said?”“It… is. But you tempted me, so you don’t have the right to judge, okay.”He leaned in. “I’ll never judge you, Stella.” His voice was soft and heavy. The way he said it made me freeze for a moment, the fork halfway to my mouth. His eyes didn’t waver, and ever since I followed him to his place, I didn’t feel like I was falling apart anymore. Nicholas had this charming way of making everything blur into the background—my pain and even the thought of James.I swallowed, forgetting to chew, and quickly looked away. “You know… you are a terrible influence.”He chuckled. “If getting you to eat is considered being a bad influence, then I guess I’ll happily accept the title.”My lips twisted into a small smile. “You are hilarious.”“And you are stubborn as hell.” He took a sip of his drink like he hadn’t just left my heart racing.Silence follow

NICHOLASI observed her... and whatever was eating her up really cut in deep because she kept staring at the ground.Just seeing her like this made my chest ache, and all I wanted to do was pull her into my arms and just hold her.God, she was beautiful... why did James get to have someone this perfect? James didn’t deserve her.Her shoulders trembled slightly. She fought so hard to hide it, but I noticed it and not just that, but also the way her hands clenched at her side like she was trying to keep herself from slowly falling apart.“Stella,” I finally said, voice low, gentle, and firm. Her head jerked up, her eyes wild. God, she had such beautiful, mesmerizing eyes, and she was so vulnerable. The way she looked at me made something twist in my chest.“I... I’m fine,” she whispered, her voice shaky, almost broken. She turned her head as if she was ashamed of me seeing her this way.I moved closer to her on the bench, refusing the urge to cup her face in my hands. “Stella, you are n
