Chapter 63:

The plan took four hours to build and would take four days to execute.

Marina laid it out on the map table with Silvain and Ragnar on either side of her and Astrid across from her and nobody pretending the personal history in the room wasn't there. They had gotten past pretending. It took too much energy they didn't have.

Four territories. Four artifacts. Four separate raids with different terrain, different guard configurations, different levels of risk.

Chapter 63:The plan took four hours to build and would take four days to execute.Marina laid it out on the map table with Silvain and Ragnar on either side of her and Astrid across from her and nobody pretending the personal history in the room wasn't there. They had gotten past pretending. It took too much energy they didn't have.Four territories. Four artifacts. Four separate raids with different terrain, different guard configurations, different levels of risk."Silvermoon first," Marina said. "It's the closest and the least fortified. Obsidian took it fast and hasn't had time to build deep defenses. We get the Moonstone Fang, we learn the pattern of his occupation, we adjust the subsequent raids based on what we find.""Who goes," Ragnar said.Marina looked at the map. "Small team. Four maximum. Speed matters more than numbers in occupied territory." She paused. "Silvain and I take Silvermoon."Silvain said nothing. Which meant yes.Ragnar's jaw shifted. "Shadowpaw is mine.""

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    Learning the Ritual

Chapter 62"Show me again," Marina said.Edric looked at her across the flat stone they were using as a work surface. He had been showing her for three hours. The morning had gone and the afternoon was going and his old hands were tired from the repeated gestures the ritual required, the specific positioning that activated each component of the Pact's structure. He showed her again.Marina watched with the focused attention she gave to things that would determine whether people lived or died. She had been this way since she was young, he suspected. The kind of person who learned by watching until they had the complete shape of something before they attempted it themselves."The second position," she said. "Your left hand drops before the right completes the arc.""Yes. The sequence matters. Right completes, left drops, both press simultaneously. If you reverse it the channel opens in the wrong direction and the root frequency inverts.""What does inversion do.""Pushes the participat

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    The Elder's Memory

Chapter 61Edric did not sleep well in the Grove. He had not said this to anyone because it was not a complaint worth making when two hundred and thirty wolves were sleeping on ground with no shelter and calling it survival. But the truth was the Grove's old magic ran through the earth at a frequency that kept him at the surface of sleep rather than under it, and in those long half-awake hours things came back to him that his waking mind had stopped reaching for years ago.Memories from a very old woman's voice. He had been twelve when she taught him. She was the eldest wolf he had ever seen, older than the pack records could account for, and she had chosen him specifically from among the young wolves of Silvermoon with no explanation that satisfied anyone including him.She had told him things. He had stored them in the way young people stored things they didn't yet understand, carefully but without context, the way you kept objects whose function you hadn't learned yet. He had live

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    Marina's Vow

Chapter 60The details came in pieces.A Silvermoon female named Ressa arrived at the Grove boundary three days after Marina's reading of the channels. She had been running for two weeks, stopping only when her body refused to continue, and she came in on her last reserves with the specific emptiness of someone who had decided to reach this place or die trying.Marina was at the boundary when she crossed it.She caught Ressa before she went down and held her weight and walked her to the fire and sat with her while Senna assessed the damage. Malnourishment, exhaustion, three partially healed claw marks across her back that had gone slightly infected.Nothing that wouldn't mend.Marina stayed while Senna worked and waited. She had learned to wait. Information extracted from someone before they were ready came out fragmented and incomplete. You sat with them. You let the fire do its work and the food do its work and you waited until they had enough in them to give what they carried with

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    The Breeding Program

Chapter 59Marina felt it at dawn. She was at the boundary stones running her morning check, the same sweep she did every two hours, when something hit the edge of her shadow magic like a finger tapping glass. Faint. Directional. Gone almost before she registered it.She went completely still. She pushed her magic toward where the tap had come from, down and outward, following the angle of it through the ground the way you followed a thread back to its source. The Grove's old channels ran beneath everything, deep and interconnected, and something had just used them.Something small. Something warm. Something that felt like russet-red and sun-heated stone and the specific magic signature of a child she had held in her arms since the first hour of that child's life.Sera.Marina's knees hit the ground before she decided to kneel. She pressed both palms flat to the earth and pushed everything she had down into the channels, following the thread, trying to read the message in it the way y

  • THE ALPHA'S RUIN    Obsidian's Attention

Chapter 58The training room was on the second level, one floor above the hostage cells and two floors below the surface.Obsidian had designed it himself. Not for combat training, the kind with weapons racks and impact pads that every pack maintained. This room had none of that. It had open floor space, good acoustics, and walls lined with the same material as the standing stones in the Sacred Grove, old quarried rock that conducted magic the way copper conducted heat.He used it for observation. He was there when they brought Sera and Luna in for the first session, standing at the far end of the room with his hands behind his back, watching the door.Sera came in looking at everything except him. Mapping exits, noting the guards, calculating. He had read the observation logs carefully and he recognized the behavior for what it was. She was doing what her father did, turning a room into a tactical problem, identifying assets and threats in order of priority. She was five.Luna came
