Masuk(A FEW DAYS LATER)
Ryker’s POV
“Don’t mess this up,” Oliver said, narrowing his eyes at me as he bounced the ball lightly on his side of the table.
“Just serve,” I replied, twirling the bat in my hand. “You talk too much.”
He smirked and served.
The ball snapped across the table, and I hit it back clean.
He returned it.
Leonardo’s POVThe least person I would have expected to see at this stupid, polished circus was Ryker. And yet there he was.Standing beside one of the food tables in a nice tux, stuffing his face with shrimp like he had personally declared war on every tray in the ballroom.Catherine had gone to stand in for her father with some guests across the room, smiling brightly and saying all the right things, and I had used that moment to slip away before another second of this night buried me alive. If I inhaled any more of her French perfume, I might have killed myself. So I wandered. And then I saw him.For a second, everything else dulled. The music softened, the chatter blurred, the glittering gold room lost its shine. It was just him at that table, chewing with the same shameless focus he seemed to give everything.
Ryker’s POVI stared at Vanessa for a full second like my brain had simply stopped working.Leo was her cousin.Leo was her cousin.Which meant Matt was related to Leo too.Which meant if anyone in that family had found out I had nearly killed Vanessa’s brother that night, I could have been charged with a whole lot more than prison. For fuck’s sake.Leo’s father was a high-ranking politician.Like... literally what the fuck?“I can’t believe Leo is your cousin,” I said at last.Vanessa shrugged, sipping her drink. “Well, I don’t know what I’m supposed to tell you about that.”Then her eyes narrowed.“So why have you been staring at him?” she asked. “Do you have a crush on him or something? Because he’s not that grea
Ryker’s POVI took in a huge gulp the second we stepped inside. The place was ridiculous.Everywhere I looked, there was gold. Gold trimming the walls, gold running along the ceiling, gold wrapped around pillars that were probably already expensive before someone decided they needed more drama. Chandeliers hung from every angle, raining warm light over the ballroom like the whole place had been dipped in melted wealth. It looked like some rich, snobby man had sneezed pure gold all over the building. The place was extravagant. It was gorgeous. It was way too much.I adjusted my jacket slightly, suddenly aware of every thread on me, of how borrowed and temporary all of this felt.Vanessa glanced at me and smirked.“Calm down,” she said, smoothing her dress as if she walked through places like this every day. “Yes, people here are wealthy. Yes, they’re important. And yes, most of them are assholes.”I snorted softly. “Yeah? I’d love to be a rich, wealthy asshole.”“Oh please,” she said,
Leonardo’s POV“Do you understand how this puts my family in the public eye?”My father’s voice cut sharply through the back of the limo, each word laced with the kind of cold anger that made people shrink without even seeing his face.“Do you know the stupid thing you have just done?”He didn’t wait for an answer. He never did.I sat across from him in silence, dressed in a tux that had probably cost more than most people’s rent, watching the city lights slide past the tinted windows while he tore into whoever had the misfortune of being on the other end of the line.“You are replaceable,” he said flatly. “Do not confuse employment with importance.”Then he hung up.The silence that followed was somehow worse. He adjusted his cufflinks like nothing had happened, jaw tight,

Ryker’s POV“One more time,” I said, tapping the page in front of her, “if you don’t understand this now, you’re not passing that test.”Vanessa didn’t even look up.She was laughing at her phone, shoulders shaking slightly, completely unbothered like we weren’t sitting here for a reason. I stared at her for a second, then reached over and flicked her forehead.“Ow!” she snapped, her blonde curls bouncing as she jerked back. “What was that for?”“Focus,” I said flatly, leaning back in my chair. “You called me out here for this. At least pretend like you care.”She rolled her eyes and waved her hand dismissively. “Please, I already have a major grasp on this subject. You can relax and leave me the hell alone.”“I can&rsqu
