INICIAR SESIÓNHENDRIXI woke up with a dry mouth and a headache behind my eyes, and for a few seconds I didn’t know where I was. The ceiling was white and the light was thin and gray, coming through blinds that had been taped shut at the edges and somewhere below me a bus went by. I tried to sit up and my right ankle caught. There was a cuff on it, a real steel one, chained to the leg of a radiator bolted to the wall, the chain was long enough to reach the bed.My jacket was gone, so was the blade in my sleeve, and the red thread at my wrist. Something in my chest dropped hard and stayed there. Then I saw the walls, every wall of the apartment was covered with paper. Street maps, floor plans, photographs pinned in rows. Red string ran between pins. A big hand-drawn map of the city took up most of the wall opposite the bed, with the districts shaded in different colors and the Veyra territories outlined in black, thick and heavy, with notes in a small slanting hand I knew better than my own. Easter
HENDRIXI woke to the sound of boots. Not close yet. Somewhere far down the tunnel, a scrape of metal on concrete, then a low voice and another answering it. Erdem was already up beside me, his hand over my mouth, a warning. His eyes were open and clear in the faint gray that leaked under the door."Four," he whispered. "Maybe five. They must be looking for us."I nodded against his palm, and he let go. We dressed without speaking. He checked the pistol he'd taken from one of Silas's dead men and gave me the spare. The blade went back into my sleeve. Neither of us said anything about the night, and I was surprised how little it needed to be said. It was just there, the way a bruise is there."There's a service shaft behind that pipe." He nodded toward the corner. "Konstantin showed me the old transit maps years ago. It comes out two blocks east.""If it's still open.""If it's not, we fight."We got the pipe cover off quietly. Cold air breathed out of the shaft, smelling of rust and r
ERDEM"Seriously, like right now?" I smiled and hit his forehead with my finger. "What are you thinking?" He reached for the small bag shyly, checking its contents."Are you shy?""No I'm not.""I've never seen you shy, but you look cute when you are.""Shut up. This is no time for jokes."I raised my uninjured hand. "Fine, I'll stop."He frowned. "We need somewhere more secure than this, somewhere your people don't know about." "I don't have a location like that. Every building I built, I built them with people I trusted.""Then we find somewhere new." Hendrix rose, offering his hand, and I took it, letting him pull me upright despite the protest my shoulder made at the movement. "What about your men? Should we leave without them?""They will find me once they escape." We moved deeper into the station's dark together, the sound of distant gunfire still audible somewhere above and behind us.We found a maintenance room off the far end of the platform, a concrete box with a rust
ERDEM The tunnel ran longer than I expected. By the time we emerged into the cold night air at its far end, both of us were bleeding. Four guards waited where the tunnel surfaced — loyalists, I had told them earlier to position here before the fighting started. Their relief at seeing me alive was visible even in the dark. "Sir. We weren't certain you'd make it.""Barely." My voice carried exhaustion I was working hard to disguise. "Status of the estate?""Chaotic, sir. Silas holds the main house. We've confirmed at least a dozen loyalists dead, more captured. Konstantin's whereabouts are unknown." My jaw tightened. Konstantin was missing too, and the thought brought a sharp pang of grief"We move."I looked back at the estate once before we moved, the small group of us cutting through darkened woods. My grip tightened around Hendrix's arm, steadying us both as exhaustion and blood loss caught up with us. We reached the city's outer districts by false dawn, the small convoy I'd arran
ERDEM "I was never fully with you or Silas to begin with, Erdem." Damir's expression carried nothing. "Your mother made certain of my cooperation tonight.""She threatened the girl again, your daughter.""Damir has a daughter?" Hendrix asked."Yes he does. I found out after the interrogation, that he fears my mother and she has been using the girl to threaten him.""She reminded me what she's always capable of. I've made my choice." He raised the weapon fully, aiming not at me but at Hendrix. "I'll deal with him first."Hendrix moved before he could shoot. He moved into Damir's space, and drove the knife up and under his raised arm before he could track his movement and correct his aim. Damir made a sound and went down hard on his knees, the weapon clattering away across the stone floor, and Hendrix stood over him in the dim emergency lighting, chest heaving."I'm... sorry,” Damir choked, blood spilling from the corner of his mouth. “Please find my daughter. And Hendrix... Liora's pr
HENDRIX The gunfire started before dawn, close enough to my room that I was moving before I’d fully woken, old instinct carrying me off the bed and into a crouch beside the door. I found the door locked from the outside — Erdem’s precaution, I realized it had probably been locked hours earlier, some attempt to keep me secured. It didn't matter now. I worked the lock with a wire I'd kept hidden, and it opened. What is happening? The corridor outside was in chaos — guards running in both directions, some toward the fighting, others away from it. I pressed against the wall, cataloguing threats, and moved toward the records room rather than away from the fighting, because whatever was happening tonight, I understood with cold certainty that the Red Ledger's full evidence needed to survive it. Smoke had already begun filling the lower corridors by the time I reached them, acrid and thick enough to sting my eyes, and I kept low, moving through it with my sleeve pressed against my face. I p
