The moment Selene stepped into the pack’s borders, the harsh words cut through the air.
“ There she comes. ”
“ Luna Selene, ” one of them said, his voice hard. “ By Alpha Rylan’s orders, you're under arrest. ”
Fear grazed her skin as two warriors grabbed her arms roughly. And tying them behind her back.
Selene’s breath hitched.
“ What? ” she whispered , stunned.
Before she could reply, they seized her arms.
A rush of fear shot through her. “ Wait, what is this about? ” She struggled against their grip, but they held her firmly.
“ You’ll find out soon enough, ” the second warrior said grimly.
Her mind swirling. Was this because she left the pack without permission? Had Rylan returned and found her missing?
Why is she been held against her wish?
Fear nearly crippled her. She could barely move her legs.
On their way, other warriors and pack members whispered, watching with wide eyes.
The look of surprise spread through their faces. Some pointed at her, shaking their heads in pity.
The sympathetic gaze made her stomach twist in agony.
By the time she was shoved inside, her legs wobbled with fear.
The sight before her froze her in place.
Elders. What are they doing here?
Rylan, her mate, pinned a cold gaze on her. She swallowed hard.
The council of Elders stood, exuding power and influence, their robes heavy, their eyes darker than the night itself.
Rylan’s back was turned towards her. And slowly he turned facing her. Her heart leaped in fear. As his eyes pierced through her, burning with rage.
She swallowed hard, her throat dry. “What have I done? Tell them to untie me.”
Rylan’s response was a deafening roar.
“ Silence! ”
The sheer force of it made her shiver.
His rage was a force, creaking in the air like lightning before a storm.
Her lips parted in shock. “ Rylan, what’s going on? ”
“ Where were you? ” His voice was cold, devoid of any warmth.
Selene wavered. “ I — I went to see a friend. ”
Rylan’s eyes narrowed. His jaw tightened. also his voice dropped, dangerously quiet.
“ Let me guess, ” he sneered. “ You went to see that fool, Kieran. After I advised you not to. ”
Selene’s breath hitched.
She couldn’t deny it.
But before she could explain, Rylan’s voice thundered through the chamber.
“ I know everything. ”
He took slow dangerous steps towards her, looming. And then he clenched her jaw with his large hand, his fingers digging into her skin.
“ I know about your secret meeting, ” he continued, his voice sharp as a blade. “ I know about the blood bond. ”
Selene froze
A blood bond?
Her lips parted in disbelief. “ What … What are you talking about? ”
Rylan lifted his hand.
And in his palm, a vial filled with blood.
Selene’s knees nearly gave out.
Her blood.
How?
“ This, ” Rylan showed her, shaking the vial. “ This is proof of your treason and betrayal. ”
Selene shook her head frantically. “ No, no that’s not true! Rylan, I would never — ”
“ lies! ” His voice cracked like a wipe.
She was shattered.
This wasn’t happening to her. What is going on?
Then, a voice cut through the chaos.
“ I saw her. ”
Selene turned sharply.
A young maid stepped forward, her hands clasped in front of her, eyes filled with false sincerity.
“ I followed her last night. She was with Alpha Kieran, ” the maid said, voice thick with lies. “ I heard them talking about how they would join forces with the rogues. About how they would — ” she swallowed — “ kill you, Alpha. ”
Selene’s entire body went cold.
She staggered back.
The room spun.
“ No, ” she blurted in defence, shaking her head violently. “ That’s not true! I never — never said that! ”
The maid’s expression remained pitiful, her voice soft. “ I wish it wasn’t true, Luna. But I heard it with my own ears. ”
Selene turned to Rylan, her eyes hopeless. “ You can’t believe this. I went to see Kieran because I was trying to help the pack! To stop the rogue attacks ”
Rylan scoffed.
“ You were trying to help the pack? ” He laughed, a bitter, humorless sound. “ By sleeping with Kieran? ”
Selene’s stomach dropped.
“ What? ” she screamed .
His golden eyes darkened.
“ I saw it, ” he growled. “ I saw the visions. You and Kieran — together. You’ve been with him behind my back. ”
Selene’s breath came in short gasps.
This was agony.
How could Rylan believe this?
She seized his arm, desperate. “ Rylan, hear me! Someone is lying to you, someone is manipulating you! ”
His hand jerked away from hers like she was a plague.
The rejection in his eyes shattered something inside her.
“ You disgust me, ” he said coldly.
Tears burned her eyes.
“ No, ” she replied . “ Rylan, please. You have to investigate this … ”
His voice boomed. “ Enough! ” His breathing was ragged, his body pulsing with rage.
Then his next words were a blade to her heart, piercing through and leaving nothing but pain.
“ I, Alpha Rylan of the Nightfang Pack, reject you, Selene, as my mate. ”
A sharp, searing pain tore through Selene’s chest.
Her bond with Rylan severed.
In deep agony, she shattered the air with a deafening scream. Her chest burned her with intensity.
Panic throbbed through her and her eyes rolled back. A terrible ache pounded in her head.
Her heart shattered into a tiny million pieces.
Suddenly, she felt nothing. Not even the bond that once held them as mates could be felt.
How could Rylan believe them without giving her a listening ear.
Out of love and duty for her pack, she did this. And now the world spoke against her.
The man she loves treated her like scum..like a criminal.
Betrayed.
Broken.
Shattered.
Her mate stood, watching her with a venomous glare
Then, Elder Vulcan’s voice crawled through the room. “ That’s not enough. ”
Silence fell.
Selene’s teary eyes danced around in confusion.
Not enough?
What more could they take from her?
What other punishment could be greater than losing her mate?
Vulcan’s lips curled into a cruel smile.
His coming words were cold as ice slammed into her body.
“ She must die. ”
Karina straightened her posture, her eyes wide with interest and worry. Leaning forward she stared at her roommate. “ Talk to me Zara,” she urged in a low, eager voice. “What did you hear? You look like you've seen a ghost!”Zara held back her response, her face white. To ensure that the door clicked securely into place she swiftly reached behind her and pushed it shut. The sudden tension was increased by the gentle thud that reverberated throughout the tiny space. Then, as though terrified of being overheard even through the closed door, she moved cautiously and huskily toward Karina. With her gaze darting around the room as though searching for unnoticed listeners she reduced her voice to a whisper. Zara said in a barely audible voice. “ Karina, I know this isn't right. I couldn't help it but it's really inappropriate.” She stopped and took a trembling breath. “You know I was cleaning the Alpha's private chamber when I heard him. They were unaware of my presence while he was speak
Tristan's uncontrollable laughter reverberated through the tense room like a sudden startling thunderclap. He flung his head back, his shoulders trembling from the intensity of his laughter utterly unaware of Rylan's glaring stare. With his jaw clenched, Rylan gazed at Tristan in astonishment as though his friend had suddenly developed hideous horns on his head. Before Tristan could control the laughter it seemed to go on for a few excruciating seconds. With his chest heaving, he gasped for air and wiped tears from the corners of his eyes with a trembling hand leaving his cheeks with faint wet streaks. “ You can't be serious.” His voice was still gasping for air and tinged with faint laughter. “You believe that all of the events that have occurred were false?” Rylan let out a sigh that seemed to weigh down the whole room because he was so full of frustration. “You know what? Forget it.” His sudden change was an obvious indication that he was finished with the pointless discussion
Alpha Rylan made a little clearing on his big mahogany desk by pushing aside the piles of parchment and leather-bound documents. In sharp contrast to the tension that had been gradually growing between him and Tristan, the air in his study was scented with dust and old paper. The heavy silence that had descended upon them was finally broken by him after he took a long thoughtful breath. Rylan started. “ I know I've always wanted this, Tristan.” His gaze fixed steadily on his Beta, and his voice was firm but calm. “I've always wanted to discover the actual location of Ridgewood to bring them down. It has been an objective and a strong desire for many years. I don't prioritize it anymore. I'm now more focused. I will act in the best interests of the pack rather than to appease a personal grudge.”Tristan's knuckles turned white as he gripped the armrest of his chair. He was speechless. Rylan's words sounded hollow to him almost as if they had betrayed their long-held goal. The oppo
Rylan was at the edge of his seat as his interest was piqued. Maybe he wanted to tell him about the attack.Matteo's eyes drifted off to Tristan, who stood behind Alpha Rylan with his hands clasped behind his back.Rylan noticed the sudden quietness from Matteo and the hesitant gleam that danced in his eyes, betraying his inner conflict.Matteo's eyes reverted to Rylan. "Can I speak to you in private?" He wouldn't want a third party to hear what he has to say."You have nothing to worry about," Rylan said. "Tristan is a loyal friend and my beta. You can speak."Matteo sighed deeply and suddenly his eyes gleamed with sadness. "I lost my brother and my friends in the attack today," he said in a grave tone."I am sorry for your loss," Rylan consoled him.“That's sad. I know how you feel,” Tristan added.Matteo nodded. “Thanks,” he muttered. He felt so bad. He lost his only brother and friends in the attack. He only survived by a thin hair's breadth. And then he became sober. Feeling a su
Tristan's brow furrowed as he leaned closer. "What could that be?" his voice was laced with concern.Alpha Rylan began to pace the length of the waiting room in the clinic while Tristan watched every step he took keenly.Tristan's forehead was creased in deep lines. Waiting anxiously for him to speak. "Alpha, you're not saying anything. You're getting me worried. You can always tell me whatever it is," he pressed on.Rylan stopped pacing and then he let out a deep breath. "It's about Selene," he muttered."Selene?" Tristan's eyes widened in surprise. "I thought you had gotten over her. Come on man, it's been months since her death. And here you are feeling sad.""You don't get it," he said through gritted teeth. "Selene and Alpha Kieran committed an offence. Why was Selene punished and Kieran left alone like he was innocent?"Tristan shrugged. " I don't know." Then he rolled his eyes. "Why are you being so dramatic? Fine, I understand that you do not like Alpha Kieran. I may not have
Alpha Rylan narrowed his eyes to slits. "What do you mean?" He asked, his voice laced with curiosity.Kieran stood abruptly, the chair scraping harshly against the floor. A knowing smirk played on his lips as he exhaled slowly. "I am not the enemy," he said, looking sideways as if expecting someone to appear. "Just make sure you are not fighting the wrong person." With that, he turned and walked away. Leaving a trail of tension in his wake. For a moment he was startled by Kieran's words. He watched intently at the retreating figure of Kieran. He wanted to call him back and demand an explanation because he sounded vague, with no real details. And what does he mean by them being pawns in Vulcan's twisted games? The more he tried to understand the situation, the more confused he became, as if he were lost in a maze, trying to come out.The large hall was empty. He sank back into his chair trying to piece the puzzle together. Was Vulcan saying the whole truth about Selene? But he saw the
