CHAPTER 58: Propositions

The ballroom thrummed with soft jazz music. There was a low buzz of conversations and laughter from every corner, punctuated by clinking of champagne glasses.

Yet the celebrant was nowhere to be found.

I had not seen Zachary since he left, seeming like he was in a hurry. Madelyn was also nowhere to be found.

After his very brief and no explanatory order to handle the rest of the party, I was stuck handling the remainder of the party that Madelyn had so graciously planned, then bailed on.

Now, I was standing here, smiling politely, though my cheeks ached from holding that expression all night. This was my role; Zachary’s right hand, his public liaison, his shield when necessary.

“You need to give what I'm proposing some thought.”

My fingers tightened on the champagne glass in my grip. I was so close to hurling the contents of the glass in his face.

The immediate source of my irritation and anger was Anderson Grey, one of Zachary’s long-term business partner

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 83: A safe of Secrets

CHAPTER 83: A safe of SecretsThe silence of my office swallowed me the moment I closed the door behind me. The silence of the space was a welcome change to all that had happened, with all the words that had hit the air today. I did not bother switching on the main light; the glow from the desk lamp was turned on, and it was enough. The faint glow from the lamp cast shadows across the paneled walls, shadows that seemed to lean in as if they wanted to listen to the thoughts I tried so hard to bury. They say that no secret could be hidden forever under the sun. I had become a convicted believer in light of the recent events. So many hidden truths were coming to light. My jaw ached from being clenched too tightly, and I pressed my fingers against the side of my temple, as if the pressure would stop the pounding in my head. I walked to the desk and pulled out the drawer. I took out a foil and popped some pills, swallowing it with the bottle of water I found in the compartment refrigerato

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 82: Negative

CHAPTER 82: NegativeBy the time I reached my bedroom, my legs were trembling beneath me. It wasn’t exhaustion in the physical sense but the kind of fatigue that clawed its way up from the pit of your stomach and stole the breath from your lungs. It was fear and anxiety mixed with lethargy.I shut the door softly, leaning against it for a moment, my forehead pressed against the wood. I felt like I was floating and drifting away in the midst of a raging storm with nothing to hold on to.I took conscious deep breaths, swallowing large amounts of air, and only then did I dare to close my eyes and let out the breath I’d been holding since we walked out of the Blackwood estate. My chest rose and fell sharply, but no amount of breathing seemed to steady the storm inside me. Patricia’s voice still rang in my ears, mocking, cruel, triumphant. I had to accept and lean on Zachary’s strength, and assurances to steady me through the storm that Vance had started. And now his mother. I suddenly re

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 81: Something else

CHAPTER 81: Something elseThe ride back home was suffocating. After I stormed out of father's house with Madelyn, there had not been another word said. My wife had not said a word. She hadn’t told me what that woman had been saying to her before I arrived, but I had a clear idea. The silence between us wasn’t peaceful, unlike at the island. It was heavy. Charged. Like a storm that had already passed but with a promise of more violent ones to come, leaving the air tasting of iron and smoke. I had earlier sent Julia to the office to tidy up a few things before she would head home, so it was just the two of us in the car. I kept my eyes on the window, jaw tight, one hand gripping my mobile phone tightly and the other resting against my thigh, clenched. Finally we arrived home, and as we pulled into the drive, I saw the lights in the foyer already glowing. Home. For Madelyn, I hoped it would bring some sense of relief and safety. I believed that today had been too much for her as well.

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 80: Never alone

CHAPTER 80: Never alone I knew Nicole. She and her gang were making my life miserable in college. She was the most popular girl. The beautiful, perfect girl who had come before me. Patricia had intentionally dropped her name like a stone in water, waiting to see how deep the ripples went. Vance’s jaw tightened immediately, his grip on my hand tightening as well. “Mother,” he warned, his tone low. He turned to me, his thumb brushing my knuckles. “Don’t listen to that. I don't care about any other girl. You’re the one I’m with now. You’re the one I chose. Not Nicole. She's in my past.”I offered a small smile that was forced with all of my strength. But Patricia wasn’t finished. “I apologise if I offended your guest, my son.” She flicked her cold gaze to me now. “I'm sure you can understand, Madelyn. It’s just… difficult, you know. To see him with someone so… ordinary after Nicole.” She tilted her head, feigning gentleness, but the venom was unmistakable. “I suppose time changes all

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 79: The first time I met Patricia

CHAPTER 79: The first time I met Patricia I told myself to stay calm, to hold my expression steady, but inside, Patricia’s words coiled like serpents, their venom spreading poisonously through me. Vance. Again. Around me. I don't want to be anywhere around him. My throat tightened as if the very thought could suffocate me, yet I refused to let her see my fear. Not her. Never her.Patricia leaned back, her elegant poise immaculate. There was a very visible shimmer of triumph lighting up her green eyes. She really thrived on the havoc she sowed, and it was clear she enjoyed watching me squirm under the weight of possibilities I dared not voice aloud. “You suddenly look quite pale, dear. I wonder what the problem could be?” She inclined her head, mock concern and confusion dancing on her face.Julia stepped forward. “Madelyn. Are you—”I cut her off, stopping her dead in her tracks with a raise of a hand while my eyes were still trained on Patricia’s face.“I'm fine. I don't need assis

  • THE GUARDIAN'S BRIDE   CHAPTER 78: Passed around

CHAPTER 78: Passed around“You’re wasting your breath,” I said finally, voice sharper now. “Because I don’t care to hear about your fantasies of family dinners, gatherings or whatever nonsense you have in your head, or even ties that don’t exist. That will never exist. You’ll excuse me if I don’t toast to your little fairytale.”The room descended into a heavy silence that was thick with tension. I prayed for Zachary to step through those doors so we could leave. I was barely managing to hold it together. Something else was nipping at the corners of my mind. If Patricia hated me this much, what would happen when she learned the truth of what her precious son had on me? I shuddered thinking about it. Patricia noticed my trembling and smiled. “Are you cold, dear?”I glared at her without answering. Her smile tightened, though her eyes still glittered with malice. “Oh, Madelyn, don’t be so cold. The thing is, I think you might actually enjoy being passed between family. I honestly thi
