POV: Seraphina

"Pick up your phone, Seraphina. It has not stopped ringing since five this morning."

Remi's voice was the first thing I heard before my eyes were even fully open, and when I sat up, he was already in my bedroom doorway with a stack of newspapers under one arm and his own phone pressed to his ear with the other hand, moving like the morning had been going for hours without me.

"What time is it?" I said.

"Six forty-three," he said, "and you are on the front page of everything."

  • THE HEIRESS HE NEVER KNEW    CHAPTER TWELVE: "She Is Still My Wife"

CHAPTER TWELVE: "He Went Home To The Wrong Woman"POV: Damian"We saw the news," my mother said the moment I walked through the door. She was sitting at the dining table with her hands folded in front of her, her face tight, her eyes watching me the way she watched me whenever she was preparing to manage a situation before it managed itself.Jade was in the kitchen doorway.I stood at the entrance of my own home looking at these two women in my space, and I felt something rise in my chest that I had been holding down since the moment the host said Seraphina's name at that gala."Damian, sit down." My mother said. " We need to talk about this calmly.""Calmly," I said."Yes, calmly. What's done is done, what we need to focus on now is how to move forward.""She was the one holding this family up," I said. Then the room went quiet. My mother opened her mouth."Three years," I said, and I was not shouting. I was something worse than shouting; I was completely still. "Three years she sat

I said."Six forty-three," he said, "and you are on the front page of everything."He dropped the newspapers on the bed in front of me, and I looked down.My own face looked back at me from seven different front pages. The photo from last night, burgundy dress, chin level, the moment just after the host said my name and the room broke into applause. I looked like a woman who had always known this moment was coming...Because I had."Business Daily." Remi said, sitting at the edge of the bed and pointing at each one."Financial Mirror, City Post. The Industry, three digital publica

  • THE HEIRESS HE NEVER KNEW    CHAPTER TEN: "Now He Knows"

POV: DamianI was three steps from her table when a man stood up.He was tall, broad, suit fitted like it was made for him that morning, and he turned to face me with the kind of stillness that told me he had been watching me cross that room from the moment I left my chair. He didn't speak. He just stood there between me and the table and looked at me with eyes that had already made up their mind before I even arrived. Then I stopped."I just need a minute with her," I said."She doesn't have a minute for you," he said. His voice was low and completely without heat, which was worse than if he had shouted at me."You don't understand," I said, "that is my wife."I know exactly who she is," he said, "the question is whether you do.I looked past his shoulder.Seraphina was still seated with her back to me, talking to the woman beside her like nothing was happening two feet behind her, like I was not standing there at all, like I was furniture in a room she had already decided to stop se

  • THE HEIRESS HE NEVER KNEW    CHAPTER NINE: "Seraphina Vaughn"

CHAPTER NINE: "Seraphina Vaughn"POV: Seraphina"Are you ready?" Remi said.He was standing at the hotel suite door with his jacket buttoned and his eyes on me, and I looked at myself one last time in the full-length mirror across the room. The woman looking back at me was not someone I recognised immediately. Not because she was unrecognisable, but because I had not seen her in three years. The dress was deep burgundy, fitted from the shoulder all the way down. The kind of dress that did not ask for attention, it simply took it, and my hair was up in a way that showed the length of my neck, the set of my shoulders, and the Vaughn family ring that my father had pressed into my palm that morning was sitting on my right hand, catching the light."Seraphina," Remi said again."I am ready," I said. Then Cyrus opened the door. The three of us walked out together. The Meridian Gala was on the fortieth floor of the tallest hotel in the city, and the moment the lift doors opened, the sound of

  • THE HEIRESS HE NEVER KNEW    CHAPTER EIGHT : "The Wrong Woman"

CHAPTER EIGHT : "The Wrong Woman"POV: Damian"I'm pregnant,"The words dropped into the middle of my living room like something heavy falling from a great height, and everything in that room. The air, the sound, even the light coming through the window, went completely still.I looked at Jade standing by the window with her hands folded neatly in front of her and her eyes watching my face the way someone watches a door they are not sure is going to open for them. She looked nervous. Not the nervousness of someone sharing good news. The nervousness of someone waiting to see if a story is going to hold.My mother was on her feet before I had even drawn a proper breath, moving across the room with a speed I had not seen from her in years, grabbing Jade's hands and holding them between both of hers like she was holding something she had been waiting a long time to receive."Oh my God," she said, and her voice cracked on the last word. "Oh my God, have you seen a doctor? Are you sure?"Th

  • THE HEIRESS HE NEVER KNEW    CHAPTER SEVEN: "She Doesn't Miss You"

CHAPTER SEVEN: "She Doesn't Miss You"POV: Seraphina"Sign it," Cyrus said, and he slid the contract across the table without even looking up from his phone.I picked up the pen and looked at the number at the bottom of the page, and signed my name across the line without blinking. The man sitting across from us, Mr Adeyemi, is one of the biggest property developers in the country, let out a slow breath like he had been holding it since he walked into this room. "It is a pleasure doing business with the Vaughn Group," he said.I smiled at him the way my father had taught me to smile in a boardroom, steady, warm, giving nothing away."The pleasure is ours," I said.He shook my hand, and Cyrus walked him out. Then the room went quiet. I put the pen down, sat back in my chair and breathed for the first time since the meeting started.Three weeks ago, I was washing dishes in an apartment that never felt like mine. Now I was signing deals that would make the front page of every business p
