CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Final Stage

The arena transformed.

The stone platforms of the third stage sank slowly back into the earth. The walls dissolved. The magical materials vanished. The battlefield opened into one vast, empty arena.

The crowd grew louder.

Everyone knew what was coming.

The announcer strode to the center, his voice rolling through the stadium. “Candidates!”

The noise faded.

“You have completed the first three stages.”

Three symbols glowed above him. A broom. A target. A fortress.

“The first stage tested your movement and control.”

The broom vanished.

“The second tested your magical ability.”

The target vanished.

“The third tested your construction and precision.”

The fortress vanished.

He raised his hand.

“Now comes the final stage.”

The crowd erupted.

“COMBAT!”

The word thundered across the arena.

Kevin’s stomach clenched.

So this was it. The test he had been dreading.

No targets. No constructs. No empty course.

Someone would stand across from him. Someone who could attack. Someone who could think. Someone who could adapt.

Finally, Veyr said.

Kevin swallowed. You sound happy.

I am.

Why?

Because now we find out whether you’ve actually been listening to me.

That’s reassuring.

It wasn’t meant to be.

Several places away, Arena stood calm. Liora’s voice touched her mind. This stage will reveal more than power.

Strategy, Arena replied.

And character.

Arena glanced at Kevin. I’m worried about him.

Liora was silent a moment.

Don’t interfere.

Arena understood.

Kevin had to face this himself.

* * *

“You will be divided into combat groups,” the announcer declared.

A massive screen lit up. Names began to appear. First group. Second. Third. The crowd roared whenever a familiar name flashed past.

Then the screen froze.

RAYDEN FLARE

KAEL STONE

The arena shook.

Two of the strongest candidates had been paired.

Rayden walked onto the battlefield, flames wrapping around his body. Kael stepped opposite him, and the ground cracked beneath his feet.

“Your objective is simple,” the announcer said. “Defeat your opponent. You may use any technique you have shown during the Trial. However, lethal attacks are forbidden.”

Barriers rose around the battlefield.

“Victory will be decided when one candidate is unable to continue, surrenders, or is judged incapable of fighting.”

He stepped back.

“Begin!”

Rayden moved first. A wall of flame exploded across the arena.

Kael didn’t dodge. He slammed his foot into the ground.

“Earth Guard!”

Stone erupted around his body. The flames struck it.

BOOM!

The crowd screamed.

Kael charged through the fire, his fist sheathed in earth.

“Stone Breaker!”

Rayden leaped back. The punch pulverized the ground where he had stood.

Rayden grinned. “You’re strong.”

Kael cracked his neck. “So are you.”

They clashed again. The battle was brutal. Fast. Controlled. Neither fighter wasted a movement.

Kevin watched closely. Their footwork. Their breathing. The rhythm of every strike.

What do you see? Veyr asked quietly.

Kevin concentrated. Rayden attacks first. That’s obvious. Kael waits for him to attack.

Why?

Because Kael’s defense is stronger.

Veyr said nothing.

Rayden wants to force him out of position, Kevin continued. But Kael is waiting for him to get impatient.

Exactly.

Kevin almost smiled. He was beginning to understand.

Power wasn’t the whole battle.

The fight ended minutes later, when Kael trapped Rayden’s leg beneath the ground. Rayden surrendered.

The crowd cheered.

More matches followed. Some were over in seconds. Others dragged on for minutes. Some candidates relied on brute power. Others on speed. Some on deception.

Others simply refused to give up.

Kevin watched every fight. Not only who won.

How they won.

Why did she lose? Veyr pressed.

She used too much magic too early.

Good. What about him?

He keeps attacking from the same side.

And?

His opponent noticed.

Exactly.

Every battle became another lesson. By the time Kevin’s name appeared on the screen, he had learned more from watching than he’d ever expected.

KEVIN RIVEN

ELIAN VOSS

The arena swelled with noise.

Kevin looked across the field.

Elian Voss stepped forward, wind already spiraling around him. He had been one of the fastest candidates in the first stage.

And he had made his opinion of Kevin very clear.

He’s still behind the rest of us.

Elian stopped at the center. “So we’re finally fighting.”

Kevin stepped up. “Looks like it.”

Elian eyed the five-point Codex. “I expected someone more impressive.”

Kevin said nothing.

Don’t react, Veyr said.

I wasn’t going to.

Good. His tone sharpened. He wants you angry.

Why?

Because angry fighters are predictable.

Kevin nodded.

The announcer raised his hand.

“Begin!”

Elian vanished.

Kevin’s eyes widened.

A burst of wind slammed into his side and threw him several feet. He rolled across the ground and was on his feet in an instant.

Elian appeared behind him. “Too slow.”

Another wind blade tore toward Kevin.

“Crimson Barrier!”

The barrier formed.

CRACK!

It shattered. Kevin stumbled back.

Stop blocking, Veyr said.

Why?

Because you’re letting him choose the distance.

Kevin watched. Elian never stopped moving. Left. Right. Behind. Above. He was controlling the battlefield.

Then what do I do?

Stop chasing him.

He’ll attack me.

Exactly.

Kevin understood.

He stopped moving.

Elian reappeared, a wind blade forming around his arm, and charged.

Kevin waited.

The strike came.

At the last second, Kevin stepped aside.

The blade missed.

Elian’s eyes went wide.

Kevin struck his shoulder with the flat of his crimson blade. Elian staggered.

The crowd gasped.

Good, Veyr said.

I thought you were going to say I almost messed up.

You almost did.

Kevin’s smile fell. Of course.

Elian brushed dust from his shoulder. His smile was gone.

“You got lucky.”

Kevin shook his head. “I watched you.”

Elian’s eyes narrowed. The wind around him exploded.

“Then watch this.”

A colossal vortex formed. Wind screamed through the arena. Candidates shielded their faces. Kevin’s clothes whipped around him.

Don’t attack, Veyr warned.

Why?

Because you don’t know what he’s hiding inside it.

Kevin held still. The vortex swelled. Elian disappeared within it.

Kevin couldn’t see him.

He closed his eyes.

You told me not to attack.

Yes.

So what do I do?

Listen.

Kevin focused. The crowd faded. The wind became one enormous roar.

Then...

A faint sound.

Footsteps.

His eyes snapped open.

Behind him.

He turned. Elian burst from the wind. Kevin ducked. A wind blade sliced the air above his head.

He spun. “Crimson Chain!”

The chain shot forward. Elian dodged.

But Kevin hadn’t aimed at Elian.

He whipped the chain toward the ground, wrapping it around a stone pillar, and used it to swing himself through the air.

Elian looked up.

Kevin dropped with his crimson blade.

Elian threw up a wind shield.

BOOM!

The impact blasted them both backward. Kevin landed on one knee, breathing hard. Elian skidded several feet away.

They stared at each other.

The crowd was silent.

The fight was closer than anyone had expected.

Above them, the Captains watched.

“He’s adapting,” Aerion said, leaning forward.

“He’s learning during the fight,” Evelyn agreed.

Darius crossed his arms. “His opponent is still faster.”

Orion said nothing.

His eyes never left Kevin.

* * *

Elian attacked again, this time conjuring several wind blades at once.

Kevin dodged. One passed his shoulder. Another sliced his sleeve. A third struck the ground beside him. He stumbled. His breathing grew ragged. His magic was running low.

Kevin, Veyr said.

I know.

No. You don’t.

What?

You’re trying to win.

Kevin looked at Elian. Isn’t that the point?

No. Veyr’s voice was firm. The point is to survive the fight intelligently.

Kevin understood.

He didn’t need to overpower Elian.

He needed an opening.

He stopped attacking.

Elian frowned. “What are you doing?”

Kevin watched him. “Nothing.”

Elian rushed him. Kevin stepped back. Another strike. Kevin dodged. Another.

Elian grew frustrated. “Fight me!”

Kevin kept moving.

Then he noticed.

Every time Elian changed direction, his left foot touched the ground first.

Always.

Kevin waited.

Elian attacked. Left foot. Kevin slipped away.

Elian attacked again. Left foot.

Kevin smiled.

You see it? Veyr asked quietly.

Yes.

Then don’t rush.

Kevin waited.

Elian came again. His left foot touched the ground.

Kevin moved.

“Crimson Chain!”

The chain snapped around Elian’s ankle.

Elian’s eyes widened.

Kevin pulled. Elian lost his balance. Kevin surged forward.

“Crimson Blade!”

The blade stopped an inch from Elian’s chest.

Silence.

Kevin held his position. Elian froze.

The examiner raised his hand.

“Match!”

The arena exploded.

Kevin slowly lowered his blade.

Elian stared at him.

Then he laughed. “You actually watched my foot.”

Kevin smiled. “You showed me.”

Elian shook his head. “You’re strange.”

Kevin laughed. “You’re not the first to say that.”

Good, Veyr said.

That sounded like praise.

It was.

Kevin blinked. Really?

Yes. A pause. But don’t misunderstand what happened.

Kevin listened.

You didn’t win because you were stronger.

Kevin nodded.

You won because you learned.

Kevin looked out at the arena.

That meant more to him than winning.

Because it was exactly what Veyr had been trying to teach him.

* * *

More battles followed.

Arena eventually stepped onto the field. Her opponent was a powerful young mage from the Flame Order’s region. The fight raged for minutes. Her four-point Codex released waves of crystalline magic. He answered with fire. The two powers collided.

Arena stayed calm.

Don’t overpower him, Liora said.

Arena understood at once. Use his movement.

She waited.

Her opponent charged. Arena stepped aside. Crystal walls rose behind him. He turned.

Too late.

The walls closed around him. Arena raised her hand.

“Crystal Bind.”

The match was over.

The crowd erupted.

Kevin smiled proudly.

Your sister is good, Veyr said.

Kevin laughed. You’re finally admitting it.

Don’t tell her.

Too late.

Across the arena, Arena looked at him and smiled.

He heard you, Liora told her.

Arena laughed.

* * *

As the final battles ended, the arena fell quiet.

The examiner returned to the center. “Candidates.”

Everyone stood.

“You have completed the Magical Knight Trial.”

The crowd roared. Kevin looked up at the six Captains, his heart hammering.

But the announcer raised his hand. “Do not leave yet.”

The crowd hushed.

“The Trial is complete.” He paused. “But the choosing has not begun.”

The six Captains rose. Their eyes moved across the remaining candidates.

“Each Captain will now review the performances of every candidate.”

Kevin looked at Arena. She looked back.

The Trial was finally over.

But their futures were not yet decided.

Above them, the six banners rippled in the wind.

And for the first time, Kevin understood something.

He had entered the Trial wanting to prove he wasn’t a failure.

But he was leaving it with something far more valuable.

He had learned how to fight.

How to observe.

How to adapt.

And most importantly, how to trust the power he was still learning to control.

That’s the beginning, Kevin, Veyr said softly.

Kevin looked at his five-point Codex. The beginning of what?

Veyr was quiet for a moment.

You’ll find out.

Kevin smiled.

The six Captains turned toward the candidates.

The choosing was next.

And whatever happened…

Kevin Riven was no longer the same boy who had walked into this arena three days ago.

The royal headquarters rose from the heart of the Capital like a fortress carved from silence.Towering walls encircled it, layered with ancient protective magic. His injured arm screamed in protest as he clawed at the ground, searching for anything to hold on to."KEVIN!"A hand shot out and caught his wrist. For one terrifying moment, he hung above the darkness, legs dangling over a pit that seemed to have no bottom. Loose stones tumbled past him and vanished into the depths. They never made a sound."Pull me up!" Kevin gasped through clenched teeth."I'M TRYING!"Another teammate threw himself forward to help. Together, they hauled Kevin over the edge, and he collapsed onto the ground, chest heaving, his injured arm clutched against him."Wonderful," he wheezed. His eyes were fixed on Kevin.“You can move.”Kevin stepped back. “Apparently.”The stranger tilted his head. “That should not be possible.”Kevin glanced at his Codex.
