We couldn't rest.

There was no time.

The moment we got Subject 13 stable and out of that nightmare chamber, Kieran sealed every exit behind us. My hands still shook from the fight with Alpha Zero.

Tyra's voice crackled through the bass speakers.

"They're coming."

Kieran's face went dark. "How many?"

A pause that lasted too long.

"Not many. But it doesn't matter. These aren't scouts, Kaia. They're Reapers."

The word hit me like ice water.

Even Subject 13, barely conscious and wrapped in blankets, flinched at the name.

"Tell me what that means," I said to Kieran. "All of it."

He met my eyes. "They're not hunters. They're the cleanup crew. Final-stage killers."

"They don't ask questions," Tyra added through the comm. "They don't leave survivors. If they sent Reapers, this is a total purge."

My stomach dropped. "They want us all dead."

"Every last one," Kieran confirmed.

The war room was bathed in red warning lights when we reached the upper levels.

Tyra stood at the center screen, arms c

  • THE LAST SHIFT: A Werewolf without a Wolf    CHAPTER 79: Alone in the Hollow

The quiet after the roots closed was worse than all the noise. For one breath, everything stopped. The forest whispers cut off, the wardline's hum died, and all I could hear was my own heartbeat, rough, angry, too loud. My hands pressed against the wall, nails digging into bark that felt more like bone than wood."Kieran!" My scream tore out of me, raw enough that I tasted blood. I beat against the wall until my fists hurt, but it didn't move. No cracks, no give. Just a solid, living wall that had swallowed him whole. The girl moved in my arms. Her head rolled on my shoulder, her lips curling back into that sick smile again. "Gone," she whispered, but the word came out in a hundred voices at once. Her little hand patted my cheek gently. "Wolf gone. Wolf bled. Wolf broke.""Shut up." My voice cracked. I couldn't tell if I was talking to her or to the thing inside her. "He's not gone."But the words sounded empty even to me.The roots pulsed under my hands, beating like a heartbeat, but

  • THE LAST SHIFT: A Werewolf without a Wolf    CHAPTER 78: The Breaking Point

The girl's mouth ripped open wider than any mouth should go. Her lips split like paper tearing, no blood coming out. That smile opened up like a black hole trying to swallow everything. The sound coming out of her wasn't whispering anymore. It was a hurricane. Thousands of voices screaming and praying and laughing all mixed together, crashing inside my head until I couldn't think. My skull felt like it was going to crack. Everything went white around the edges."Kieran!" I reached for him with my free hand. His body was shaking under my touch. He was still on one knee, his sword trembling, his other hand pressed so hard against his head I thought he might break something. He took a deep, rough breath and pushed me back with a growl. "Don't touch me, hold her still!"But she wouldn't be still. The kid's body in my arms bucked like something was crawling under her skin, like a hundred hands were pushing from the inside trying to get out. Her little fists hit me, weak but wild, her nails

  • THE LAST SHIFT: A Werewolf without a Wolf    CHAPTER 77: The Smile That Wasn't Hers

That smile made my blood turn to ice. It didn't belong on a kid's face. It looked too wide, too knowing, stretching her lips in ways that looked wrong.I almost dropped her. My arms jerked, torn between wanting to throw her away and the voice in my head that still said she was just a scared little girl who needed help."Kaia!" Kieran grabbed my arm. His voice cut through my panic. "Don't let go."The girl's black eyes rolled back, showing only white for a second, then snapped back to me. That awful smile never moved. Her lips opened, but the sound didn't come from her throat. It came from everywhere.A voice, deep and layered, spoke through her mouth."She carries me."The whole forest shivered. Leaves rustled with no wind, moss under my feet pulsed like a heartbeat.I stumbled backward. "Kieran…""I heard it." His sword was up again, but his arm shook from his wound. "It's using her."The girl's head jerked. Her body went rigid in my arms. For a second, her little hands clawed at me,

That one step made the ground shake. Not violently, but worse than that. Subtle, like something huge was moving deep underground, way below the moss and roots and black water.Kieran moved with it, keeping himself between me and the thing. His sword was up and ready. I could tell by how tight he held it that he wasn't waiting for it to attack, he was ready for it to appear anywhere. The girl felt heavier in my arms now. Way heavier, like she'd doubled in weight in seconds. Her skin was so cold it hurt to touch, and her head just hung there against my shoulder, completely limp."Kieran…" My voice came out rough and too loud.He didn't look at me. "Keep backing up."The thing took another step. Slow and careful. The moss under its feet didn't just bend, it turned black and curled up like paper in a fire. The smell got sharper until I could taste it, metal coating the back of my throat. The quietness was terrible. I hadn't realized how much the whispers had filled my head until they were

Its smile was all wrong. Too wide, like someone had cut it that way. Like it was wearing a human face but didn't know how to use it properly. Black water dripped from its chin in thick drops, and where they hit the ground, little wisps of steam came up. It smelled like burnt metal.Kieran stepped right in front of me. His sword was low, the tip almost touching the wet ground. His whole body was tense, ready to spring. Even in the dark, I could see his knuckles going white around the handle. The girl was limp beside me. Her breathing was fast and shallow, and every few seconds her body jerked like something was pulling at her. The whispers in my head got louder, but they seemed to be pulling at her even more. The thing just stood there at first. Still as a statue. It wasn't looking at Kieran or me. All its attention was on her."Stay behind me," Kieran said, his voice quiet but sharp.I nodded, but I couldn't stop staring at the creature. My fingers grabbed the girl's sleeve tight. The

That sound wouldn't stop. At first it was quiet, like someone laughing behind their hand. Then it got louder. Sharper. It made my skin crawl and matched the beat of our feet hitting the ground.Kieran kept running. He held the girl tight against his chest, his face hard, staring straight ahead like he was afraid to look anywhere else.My foot caught on a root and I grabbed the nearest tree to stop myself from falling. My hands came away dirty and sticky. Something was wrong inside my chest, it felt like claws scratching at my ribs, trying to get out. Every breath hurts."Kieran," I called out, my voice rough. "What was that thing back there?""Not now." His voice was sharp as a knife. He didn't even turn around.Branches hit my arms as I pushed forward. The moonlight came through the trees in thin lines, and every time I stepped into the dark, the air felt thick. Like it was trying to choke me. I couldn't tell if the forest was getting smaller or if I was just dizzy. The laughing move
