CHAPTER 31: THE FINAL TEST BEGINSMIRA'S POVBeta Marcus stepped into the arena first and I swear the ground shook under his weight.He was massive even for a wolf, all thick muscle and scarred flesh that told stories of decades worth of fights. His eyes locked on mine with pure hatred burning in them and I knew right then this wasn't going to be a test. This was personal.Councilor Matthias's voice cut through the tension like broken glass. "First opponent, Beta Marcus of Ashback Pack. The rules remain unchanged. Defeat without permanent injury or death. Loss of control means execution."Marcus shifted before Matthias even finished talking. His wolf form was bigger than any I'd ever seen, dark brown fur rippling over muscles that looked carved from stone. He growled low and every wolf in the arena felt it in their bones.I didn't let myself think. I Just moved.He charged and I dropped low, sliding under his massive body as claws raked the air where my head had been a second before.

Behind him I could see Joseph and Elara hovering in the hallway like they were afraid to come closer."What do you mean I have to fight Rael?" My voice came out steadier than I felt."The third test." Elric stepped inside and closed the door. "The Council's announced it. You fight three Ashback warriors without killing them. Beta Marcus, some warrior named Sera and—""And Rael." I finished for him. My hands started shaking so I shoved them under my legs. "Of course. Because why would they make this fair?""It's a setup." Elric crossed the room in three strides and dropped to his knees in front of me. His hands covered mine. "You know that right? Rael will try to kill you and when you defend yourself they'll claim you lost control."I wanted to laugh but nothing about this was funny. "

CHAPTER 29 THE DESTROYERMIRA'S POVThe ground looks different from before.That was the first thing I noticed.Shadowfang soil had always been dark and cool under my feet, packed down by generations of wolves running it bare. This ground was cracked, and now burned white in places, still smoking. Ash clung to my ankles as if it wanted to crawl up my legs.I smelled blood before I saw it not fresh but Old blood. Cooked blood. The kind that stayed in your nose long after you stopped breathing it in.My chest tightened.I lifted my hands and froze.They were red and completely coated like I had dipped them into someone and pulled them out again. Silver light crawled under my skin, pulsing with every heartbeat. It hurts and painful. Like pressure. CHAPTER 28: BREAKDOWNMIRA'S POVThe silver fire leaves my body like it was ripped off and torn out of me.The chamber is half gone. The stone cracked open like a bone. The Metals are twisted. Smoke on the floor and entering the back of my throat. My ears ring so hard it feels like I’m underwater and everything sounds far away except my own breathing, sharp and ugly, coming out of me.I’m on my knees. I don’t remember me falling.My hands shake so badly that I press them into the floor just to feel something solid. The heat from the blast is still on my palms and I barely notice the pain. I welcome it. It’s better than the picture still burning behind my eyes.Elric’s body.His throat was torn open.His blood was spilled on the ground.I make a sound and don’t recognize it as my own until my chest tightens and my jaw starts to hurt from how hard I’m clenching it. I can taste salt and iron. I don’t wipe my face. I don’t care who sees me like this.Someone laughs softly and satisfied.

CHAPTER 27 THE ASSASSINAUNT NELLY'S POVThe body is still warm when I kneel beside it.That tells me everything I need to know.I push the hood back and study his face. He's a young boy and too young to be doing this kind of work. His neck is broken clean, quick. He never saw it coming. Good. Fear leaves a mess behind.I roll him onto his side and pull his sleeve up.There it is.It's Ashback.The mark is burned into his skin, half healed, and careless. Rael always was sloppy when he thought he had the upper hand.I grab the corpse by the ankle and drag him down the hall. Blood streaks the stone behind us. Guards freeze when they see me coming.
