Elena’s POV

“Elena, am I so bad that you would rather go with a drug-peddling organ trafficker than stay with me?” the man says almost as if he is in agony.

I stare at the man crouching in front of me. I know that voice, and the face looks familiar, but for a few seconds I cannot make sense of anything here.

Then it hits me.

Massimo.

He has come for me. Massimo has come to save me. But wait, he is supposed to be in San Francisco. He told me he was leaving, and I had been so pleased because it me

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 51: New Terrain

Massimo’s POVThe journey in the van goes on for an hour, and that is enough time for me to ponder why I didn’t think of coming with my men. Maybe because I just wanted to have a normal dinner with Elena. One where gunmen wouldn’t be hovering around over our heads. I guess that’s impossible for someone like me.When the van stops, I tighten my hold on Elena.“Wait,” I mumble. She settles against me again while I listen. The engine is still running, but I can hear another vehicle somewhere nearby and a man speaking to the driver.I ease the hay away from my face. We have stopped beside a small roadside stall. Beyond it, there are fields, a few scattered buildings and bright light.I touch Elena’s shoulder and point towards the tailgate.“Quietly.”She nods. I climb down first, then lift her out, keeping her close until the van pulls away. Neither of us speaks as its rear lights disappear around a bend.Elena brushes hay from her dress.“Where are we?”“I don’t know yet.”She looks along

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 50: Escaping From Dinner

Elena’s POVMassimo pulls me off the chair so suddenly that I barely have time to cry out before we hit the ground. His body covers mine as something shatters above us, scattering glass across the terrace.“Stay down.”I don’t understand what is happening until I see the gun in his hand.Another shot goes off, and people begin screaming. A woman stumbles over our overturned chair, her companion dragging her up before they run towards the kitchen's entrance. Everyone is moving at once.Massimo fires past the edge of the table. I flinch so hard that my head knocks against his shoulder.“Are you hurt?”I shake my head, even though I haven’t checked. My ears are ringing, and there is broken glass near my face. A moment ago, he was about to kiss me. Now he is crouched over me with a gun.“Stay behind me, Elena.”He shifts, and I catch sight of a man near the entrance to the terrace. There is something in his hand, and when he raises it, Massimo fires again. The man falls against a table.Oh

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 49: Intimate Dinner

Massimo’s POVElena is taking me out.I still don’t know what to make of that. I expected her to ask for her passport, a flight, perhaps a car to get her away from me the moment I gave her freedom. Instead, she stood in front of me with her cheeks flushed and asked me to dinner.Perhaps she feels she owes me something. I dislike that explanation enough that I have spent the last hour looking for another reason why Elena would want to have dinner with me. I fasten my cuffs and leave the bedroom before I decide there is something wrong with her invitation.Elena is waiting near the lift in a pink dress. She turns when she hears me, and the smile that spreads across her face makes me slow down. The dress fits closely at her waist before falling loosely around her legs. Her hair is tied in a high ponytail, leaving her neck bare except for a fine necklace. I would rather she had left it down, but that is hardly a complaint I can make while struggling to look anywhere else but her neck.“Rea

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 48: Holding on When Letting Go.

Elena’s POVFor a moment, I keep holding his face, waiting for him to explain what he means.“You’re letting me go?”“Yes.”My fingers loosen against his cheeks. He gets up before I can think of anything else to say, and I lower my hands into my lap.I should be happy. I have begged him for this, argued with him, put myself in danger trying to get away. Now all I have to do is stand up and leave. So why am I still sitting here?“Why?”Massimo pauses beside the table. “Why?”“Why are you letting me go?”He puts down the remote he has just picked up.“Isn’t that what you wanted?”“Yes.”The answer comes too quickly. His mouth tightens a little, and I wish I had given myself a moment before saying it.“That’s what I thought.”I press my fingers together, trying to understand what is happening. He has just shown me that he saved my life. I have barely managed to apologise, and now he is telling me I can leave.“Is it because of what I said to you?”“No, Elena.”“I called you a monster.”My

Elena’s POVSomeone knocks on my door. “Ma’am, may I come in?”I straighten at the sound of the voice outside my door. “Yes, come in.”A young woman enters, dressed in the same uniform I have noticed on the other staff in the hotel.“Pardon me, Miss Elena. The Don would like to see you in the west wing.”“Um, okay.”She starts to leave, and I get up.“Please wait. I don’t know where the west wing of this hotel is. I’ll go with you.”I have been here long enough to know how easily someone could get lost in this hotel. I slip into my shoes and follow her, grateful I didn’t attempt to find it myself. We eventually enter a large suite, different from my room. Massimo is seated with a few men, one of whom is showing him a document.“Excuse us,” he says.“Oh.”I turn to leave.“Not you, Elena.”I stop and turn back as the men walk past me. The young woman leaves with them, closing the door behind her.Massimo studies me, and I wonder whether I should have changed before coming. I am wearing

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL    Chapter 46: New Situation Resolutions

Massimo’s POVI stare at the photograph lying in front of me, beside a message I have read so many times I no longer need to look at it.She has changed you. How did you forget that this is not you? That is why she has to go.Someone took the photograph outside the club. Elena is smiling at me, and I am too occupied with her to notice someone was standing across the street, close enough to capture that expression on her face.I push the photograph away.“Have we found the person who dropped this?"“Yes boss but he is insisting he was just a courier guy,” Benito says. “We’re tracing all the path it took before it got to him.”Of course we are. We keep checking things after something has already happened.I almost say it aloud, but he is waiting for an instruction, and taking my anger out on him will not change the fact that I am the man in that photograph. I knew there were people watching me. I knew I had enemies who will jump on weaknesses like this. Elena has become my weakness. Yet

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 5: The Chase

Massimo’s POVI burst through the door. And then I find myself in a poorly lit alley. The cold night rushes in, hitting me sharply like a slap. The alley stretches in front of me, deserted and for a moment I see nothing. Then my phone is already in my hand."Don?""Lock down every road leaving Marb

  • THE MAFIA'S JEWEL   Chapter 2: A Very Dangerous Homecoming

Elena’s POVI arrived in Valencia yesterday and the first thing I had to do this morning was come to my garden but what is before me right now is beyond heartbreaking. My Valencia garden is dying. This is where my love for plants started. I planted some of these with my dad when I was seven and ove
