Jace

The smell of frying bacon creeps into my dreams before I open my eyes.

For a second, I forget where I am. The sheets are warm, tangled around my legs, and the faint weight of her arm is still draped across my chest. Ingrid breathes slow and deep, her face half-buried against me.

I move carefully, brushing a strand of hair away from her lips. She doesn’t stir.

When I slip out of bed, I catch my reflection in the mirror — lips bruised, jaw marked. A smirk tugs at my mouth. Yeah… last night happened.

By the time I make it downstairs, the dining area smells like coffee and fresh eggs. Rick’s behind the counter, spatula in one hand, a laptop open beside the toaster. Jaxon’s leaning against the table, scrolling through something on his phone.

“We’re thinking ahead,” Rick says without looking up. “It’s not if they’ll hit us, it’s where.”

Jaxon glances at me. “Grey House is the most obvious target. It’s symbolic. And fortified… but predictable.”

“Which is why they’ll come for it,” I say,

Chapter 79Jewel The water went down wrong. One second, I was just sipping because Rick insisted, the next it was burning up my throat and forcing me into a coughing fit that made my chest ache all over again.“Shit—” I managed between coughs, doubling forward.“Hey, easy.”Jace’s hand was suddenly there, firm and warm on my back, patting in slow, steady rhythm. He stayed close, close enough that I could feel the heat from his body even through my shirt.Rick hovered in front of me, looking like he couldn’t decide whether to take the glass or panic, but Jace’s voice cut through.“She’s fine. ”The low calm in his tone was ridiculous—like he had the right to sound that sure of me.I tried to glare up at him but my eyes were watering too much to manage it. He was watching me like he was tracking every breath, every twitch of my hand. The coughing finally eased, but the weight of his palm didn’t move. It stayed, heavy and grounding, like he wasn’t ready to let go yet.New feeling. It w

Chapter 78The room felt warmer than it should’ve been. Or maybe my body was just shutting down in slow motion.I tugged lightly at Jace’s shirt — not enough to pull him closer, but enough for him to feel it.He glanced down immediately, eyes sharpening. “What is it?”“I… don’t feel so good,” I whispered. My voice was faint, even to me. “It’s… dizzy. Everything’s… spinning.”His brows knit, tension slicing through his expression. “Sit down—no, lie down. Now.”“I’m fine—” The word was barely out before my knees wavered. He caught me fast, one arm sliding behind my back, the other under my knees, lifting me like I weighed nothing. The scent of smoke and coffee clung to him, grounding me in a way the spinning air couldn’t.Jaxon stepped forward, his grin gone, eyes scanning my face like he was reading an injury report. “She’s pale as hell.”The pounding in my ears got louder. My fingers stayed curled in Jace’s shirt, because letting go felt like the worst idea in the world.JaceHer fing

Chapter 77JewelIt started as a faint tightness in my chest. I thought it was just from sitting too long, my ankle throbbing with each beat of my heart. But then the air seemed to get heavier. Thicker.I shifted upright, trying to shake it off.No. Not now.My breaths turned shallow, faster. A familiar panic crawled up my spine. I knew the feeling too well — the dry rasp, the way my ribs felt like they were shrinking inward.“Jace…” My voice barely made it past my lips. “I—”He was across the room in two steps, crouching in front of me. “What is it?”I clutched at my chest. “Asthma… no inhaler…”Something flickered in his eyes — fear, but hard-pressed under control. “Rick!” he barked, and the sound rattled through the wooden walls.Footsteps thudded. Rick appeared, Jaxon right behind him, both of them instantly alert.“Where is it?” Rick demanded.“I don’t—” I wheezed, shaking my head. “I didn’t bring—”“Damn it,” Jaxon muttered, already sprinting out the door.Jace’s hand was at the

Chapter 76JewelI only meant to step out for a second. The trash bag was light, nothing dramatic — just leftover breakfast scraps and the cling of last night’s bottles. The slope outside the rest house looked harmless from the top. But one bad step, one slick patch of moss, and suddenly gravity yanked me forward.I tumbled. The ground blurred — sky, dirt, leaves, sky again — until I slammed hard against a jut of rock halfway down the steep.“Ah—!”Pain knifed through my ankle, hot and sharp, making my stomach twist.I tried to stand. Bad idea. The second my weight touched it, my vision went white at the edges.“Shit… shit, shit…” My breath was ragged. The trash bag had rolled a few feet away, split open. A stupid, humiliating mess.I sat there, clutching my ankle, feeling it swell beneath my fingers. Every movement made the pain pulse harder, crawling up my leg.It hurt like a bitch. Like the bone itself was screaming.Somewhere above, voices were faint — laughing, talking — unaware

Chapter 75JaxonThe trail narrowed after the overlook, the trees closing in again, their branches knitting together overhead. The sunlight thinned to patches, shifting across the dirt path as the wind stirred.Jace stayed in front, his hands brushing against the tall grass at the edges. Rick trailed somewhere in the middle, humming to himself like he was just trying to distract from how out of breath he was.I let my pace slow, and so did Jewel. Before long, there was just enough space between us and the others that their voices blurred into the wind.“You like it up here?” I asked quietly. She glanced at me, her expression unreadable at first. “It’s… different. Feels like the noise can’t reach you here.”“That’s the point,” I said. For a moment, we just listened to the wind threading through the branches. The air smelled cleaner here, sharper.“You seemed quiet this morning,” I added. Her gaze flicked back to where Jace was walking ahead, then returned to me. “I’m thinking.”“Danger

  • THE POSSESSIVE BLOODLINE    Chapter 74

Chapter 74The smell of garlic and onions hit first, pulling me out of that half-asleep haze. In the small kitchen, Jace was moving with a focus I’d only ever seen when he had a gun in his hands — except now it was a ladle and a pan.Steam rose from a pot on the stove, the sharp scent of broth filling the room. Beside it, a pan sizzled with something golden-brown.“Hangover soup’s almost done,” he said without looking up. “You’re welcome, Rick.”From the couch, Rick groaned like the volume of Jace’s voice was a personal attack. “You’re a saint.”Jewel appeared from the hallway, hair still damp from a quick wash, wearing that guarded morning look like she wasn’t ready to be social yet. She sat at the table, and Jace slid a steaming mug of coffee toward her without a word.“Alright,” he said, finally glancing up at all of us. “What’s the plan for today? Dominic left us here for a reason. Told us to relax, so… that’s what we’re gonna do.”“Relax,” Rick repeated, peeking up from under the
