CHAPTER 5: THE RETURN

Three years had passed since Luca walked through the gates of Silver Moon with nothing but a broken heart and blood on his hands.

Three years since the pack had watched him leave.

Three years since he had believed that he would never see those walls again.

But the forest remembered.

The tall trees still stood around the territory, their branches moving gently beneath the evening wind. The same stone walls surrounded the pack, rising high enough to disappear into the darkness above. Torches burned along the walls, their flames flickering against the cold night.

Inside the gates, the pack was settling down for the evening.

Wolves moved through the courtyard.

Children ran between the houses.

Warriors returned from patrol.

Everything looked peaceful.

Then the guards heard something.

At first, it was so faint that they almost ignored it.

A distant sound.

Thud.

The older guard lifted his head.

Thud.

He turned toward the forest.

“What is that?”

The younger guard stopped beside him.

“I don’t know.”

They listened.

The sound came again.

Closer.

Thud.

Thud.

Thud.

The guards moved toward the edge of the wall.

The sound was no longer difficult to hear.

Horses.

Many of them.

The younger guard reached for his weapon.

“Should I call the patrol?”

The older guard nodded.

“Do it.”

Before the younger guard could move, dark shapes began to appear between the trees.

One horse stepped into the moonlight.

Then another.

Then another.

A group of riders slowly emerged from the forest.

They were dressed in dark clothing, their faces serious, their movements quiet and controlled.

But none of them spoke.

At the center of the group was a single rider.

He was mounted on a powerful black horse.

A long black coat covered his body, moving gently behind him whenever the wind passed.

His posture was straight.

His hands rested calmly on the reins.

He did not look like someone who had come to ask for anything.

He looked like someone who already knew he belonged wherever he stood.

The riders stopped several feet from the gates.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the clouds moved.

Moonlight fell across the rider.

And the silver crown on his head became visible.

Everything changed.

The older guard froze.

His eyes widened.

The color disappeared from his face.

His hand slowly slipped away from his weapon.

He stared at the crown as if he had suddenly seen a ghost.

The younger guard turned toward him.

“What is wrong?”

The older guard didn’t answer.

His breathing had become shallow.

He took one step backward.

Then another.

His knees suddenly gave way.

He dropped to the ground.

The younger guard stared at him.

“Why are you—”

Then he saw the crown.

His voice disappeared.

The weapon fell from his hand.

He dropped to his knees too.

The wolves on the walls saw them.

One by one, they followed their gaze.

The crown.

Silver.

Ancient.

The crescent moon surrounded by a circle.

The symbol every wolf had been taught to respect before they were old enough to understand why.

The symbol that belonged to only one bloodline.

The Moonblood.

No one asked who the rider was.

No one asked why he wore the crown.

No one questioned whether it was real.

They knew.

Every wolf knew.

A woman standing near the courtyard entrance saw it.

Her face went pale.

Her hand covered her mouth.

She dropped to her knees.

Then the wolf beside her followed.

Then another.

Then another.

The movement spread through Silver Moon like a wave.

The warriors stopped walking.

The children were pulled close by their parents.

The conversations disappeared.

The laughter disappeared.

The entire pack became silent.

One hundred wolves.

Two hundred.

Then three hundred.

Every single one lowered themselves to the ground.

Every head bowed.

Every eye dropped.

The gates remained open.

The rider slowly moved forward.

His horse stepped through the entrance.

He did not rush.

He did not speak.

His eyes moved across the courtyard.

The same courtyard where he had once stood as a frightened twenty-three-year-old boy.

The same stones where his mate had rejected him.

The same place where his father had looked him in the eyes and told him to leave.

Luca remembered everything.

But the memories no longer controlled him.

His face remained calm.

His eyes were different now.

There was no fear in them.

No desperation.

No need for anyone’s approval.

He passed through the gates.

The warriors behind him followed, but they did not need to say a word.

The wolves of Silver Moon remained on their knees.

Luca slowly looked around.

The pack house stood ahead.

The training grounds were to his left.

The Alpha’s residence stood beyond the courtyard.

Nothing had changed.

And yet everything felt different.

Three years ago, Luca had walked through those gates with his head lowered because he believed everyone inside was stronger than him.

Tonight, every wolf inside was kneeling.

Luca stopped his horse.

He looked toward the center of the courtyard.

A cold wind moved through his coat.

The silver crown caught the moonlight again.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then an elderly wolf near the front slowly raised his eyes.

His face was wet with tears.

He stared at Luca.

At the face beneath the crown.

At the eyes he had seen many times before.

His lips trembled.

“No…”

Luca looked at him.

The old wolf’s breath caught.

He remembered the boy who had once trained with the pack.

The boy everyone had mocked.

The boy who had stood alone on the night of the mate ceremony.

The boy who had walked into the forest after being rejected.

His eyes widened.

“Luca…”

The name left his mouth like a whisper.

But in the silence of the courtyard, everyone heard it.

A murmur passed through the kneeling wolves.

“Luca?”

“Is that really him?”

“The omega?”

“He’s alive…”

Luca remained silent.

The wolves slowly began to look at him again.

Some stared in disbelief.

Others lowered their heads even further.

But no one stood.

No one dared.

Because the crown had already answered every question.

The man standing before them was not someone they could challenge.

Not someone they could order away.

Not someone they could laugh at.

He was Moonblood.

And the crown belonged to him.

Luca looked toward the Alpha’s residence.

Behind those walls was the man who had once called him weak.

The woman who had rejected him.

The man she had chosen instead.

For three years, Luca had imagined what it would feel like to see them again.

He had imagined anger.

He had imagined pain.

He had imagined revenge.

But now that he stood there, surrounded by three hundred kneeling wolves, he felt something completely different.

Peace.

He slowly looked down at the crown.

Then back at the pack.

No words were necessary.

They had already understood.

The boy they had thrown away had returned.

Not broken.

Not begging.

Not asking to be accepted.

He had returned wearing the one crown that no ordinary wolf could ever claim.

And every wolf in Silver Moon had bowed before him.

The Moonblood had returned.

Luca remained near the doorway, but he did not leave.Elias’s words followed him.Someone close to the Moonbloods had given their enemies a way to find them.Luca turned slowly.“What happened that night?”Elias looked toward the fire.“The Moonbloods had no warning. That is the part you need to understand first.”Luca said nothing.“They lived normally that evening. Families ate together. Children went to sleep. The warriors finished their duties and returned to their homes. No alarm was raised. No one was told to gather weapons or prepare for an attack.”Elias’s voice remained steady.“They went to sleep believing the danger they faced was the same danger they had always known—the fear and suspicion of other wolves. They did not know that someone had already exposed their location.”Luca’s face tightened.“So they were completely unaware.”“Yes.”Elias paused.“Before dawn, the attack began.”“How could the attackers reach them so easily?”“They already knew where to go.”Elias move

Luca remained by the window.Elias’s silence had not left his mind.Someone had known where the Moonbloods were.Someone had given them a way to find them.Luca turned slowly.“Who?”Elias did not answer.Luca walked back toward the table.“You said someone knew where they were.”“I said someone gave others a way to find them.”“That’s the same thing.”“No.”Elias’s voice was quiet.“There is a difference.”Luca stopped.“Then explain it.”Elias looked toward the fire.“The Moonbloods did not lose their lives because someone happened to discover them.”Luca’s eyes narrowed.“Then how?”“Someone helped them.”The room seemed to grow colder.Luca stared at Elias.“Someone helped the people who wanted them dead?”Elias nodded once.“Someone they trusted.”Luca’s face hardened.“A Moonblood?”“No.”“Then who?”Elias looked at him.“Someone close enough to know things outsiders could never have known.”Luca slowly sat down. His breathing had changed.“What did this person know?”“Where the

The fire burned quietly between them.Luca remained standing near the table, watching Elias.“Tell me,” he said.Elias pulled the chair closer to the fire but did not sit.“Long before you were born, the Moonblood name carried a kind of power that other wolves did not understand.”Luca folded his arms.“What kind of power?”Elias looked at him.“They were not feared because they were cruel.”“Then why?”“Because they could become something others could not control.”Luca’s expression tightened.Elias walked slowly across the room.“The Moonblood bloodline was different. Their strength was not limited in the same way as ordinary wolves. The older they became, the more their abilities could develop.”Luca said nothing.“Some Moonbloods became stronger than Alphas. Some could command wolves who were stronger than themselves. Their presence alone could change the balance between packs.”Luca’s eyes narrowed.“So they were powerful.”“Powerful enough to make rulers nervous.”Elias stopped

The following morning, Luca returned to the library before the palace became busy.He had spent most of the night thinking about the message he had found in his mother’s cloth. Although he had tried to push the questions aside and focus on the problems Silver Moon was facing now, the mystery surrounding his mother had become impossible to ignore. He needed to know what had happened to her.More importantly, he needed to understand why someone had once been afraid of what might happen if people discovered her child. The library was almost exactly as he had left it the previous afternoon. Pale morning light entered through the tall windows, falling across the old shelves and the wooden tables covered with years of dust.Luca walked toward the section where he had been searching. His eyes moved over the shelves until he found the place where he had been standing when he discovered the cloth. He reached for the same book. Then another. He searched through the records carefully, hoping to

His silver crown rested on the table beside him.For a moment, he stared at his reflection.Three years ago, he had left Silver Moon as an omega who had been rejected in front of the entire pack. Now he stood as its king. But becoming powerful had not erased what happened. It had only made him strong enough to decide what happened next.A knock sounded.“Your Majesty.”“Enter.”Marcus stepped inside and bowed.“The council is waiting for you.”“I’ll be there.”Marcus hesitated.“There is something else.”Luca looked at him.“What?”“Amara asked to speak with you.”Luca’s expression did not change.“Tell her I’m busy.”Marcus nodded.“Yes, Your Majesty.”He turned toward the door.“Marcus.”He stopped.“Tell her she should stop waiting for an answer I have already given her.”Marcus understood.“Yes, King Luca.”He left.⸻Amara
